Movies/series you think will be remade/rebooted
Not that you WANT to see remade/rebooted, but ones you could easily see happening in the next 5 years or so. And talk about how they should be and/or if they will fail or succeed.

I said years ago that Total Recall would be a good film to be remade and I stand by that. Few weeks ago I read they are planning one now.
Just think with a decent director and writer, and with enough money behind it, they could really make a good sci-fi/action film, which is a genre that needs a title other than Star Trek to lead the way. I think the Mars sets could look awesome, and with today's CGI, just seems like it could be one insane movie to remake. Dunno about the lead casting though - I def do not think Sam Worthington would be a good choice, since he seems to be the next action star. |

I'll put my little spin on this in a couple of sections:
1.) In the next 5 years (that I think will happen): RoboCop - Should attempt that serious tone like the original, but ultimately I don't see it going well. Escape from New York - Depending on who they get (Gerry Butler would have been phenomenal, when it was first thought of a couple of years ago) it has the potential to be a blockbuster if they can leave out bubblegum tactics. The Great Escape - A disaster waiting to happen, but I think Hollywood will try to do it anyways Bonnie and Clyde - I can see this move happening because of the plethura of young talented actors (Shia Labeouf, Ellen Page, etc.) And I can see it doing very well as long as they try to not pretend to be Warren Beaty. - I know there are some in devlopment that I can't think of, and at the moment its hard because it seems like almost every old TV show or movie is greenlit for a remake today. 2.) In the next 5 years (that I WANT) The Dirty Dozen - I can see a remake of this, with the right cast, being a smash action/comedy hit, much like the original. They can update the story to either fit todays situation, or leave it a WWII period piece. There are so many characters, each unique that you can find some sort of star to portray. Example: - the Franco character, the "leader" of sorts I see an Adam Sandler type (ala Longest Yard) - Jim Brown's character - maybe a Terry Crews or The Rock. - Lee Marvin's character - Tommy Lee Jones (I know he's old, but with the right makeup, they can liven him up) Death Wish - Sly Stallone was looking to remake this movie, and I think it can, but maybe not with Rambo in the title role. He tried this already with Get Carter and it wasn't the best effort. I'd like to see it happen though with someone of equal calibre I can keep going. However, a lot of people will compare this to the Expendables of this year. That is about as close as we'll get to a Dirty Dozen without actually using the same concept. |

I thought I read that they are planning on doing RoboCop? But from what I remember, it won't take place in Detroit and is going to be set in LA.

Here's an observation/question: A lot of these 80's staples that are being remade obviously rely somewhat on nostalgia and the popularity of the source material. If you were to come up with an 80's-esque concept today, would it get over on its own? Or would you end up with an assortment of Vin Diesel movies?

The Shining doesn't count as a remake because it's based on a book. That's like saying Hamlet or Dracula is being remade. It's not really the same thing.
The same applies for comic book movies too. It's new adaptations of the original source from literature. Batman Begins isn't a remake of Tim Burton's Batman. They've pretty much remade most of what I think they will by now. I hope they don't go as far as to remake movies like Jaws, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, etc. at this juncture. I still don't fully trust it though. |

I think the studios just like to reboot because it may be easier. I honestly think that the average person doesn't know/care if it's a reboot or a sequel.
They'll just go see the brand name. The Thing and Scream are both coming out with new installments this spring and they're a prequel and sequel respectively. What they've done is just not put a number on the title card. Scream is called Scre4m but you can barely tell, and The Thing prequel is just called The Thing. I am sure they will make just as much money as if they had rebooted, and they avoid actually restarting the franchise and pissing people off. |

Breakfast Club. People were against this.
Blade is due for a reboot. Would like to see a modern take on Swan's Crossing. An American produced Power Rangers. Doesn't have to be a reboot per se, and the Asian directors could even stay. I think a less campy, more mature approach with an western superhero edge would be awesome. Yeah I guess that would be a reboot. Robocop, without the caricature robotic movements. The leftist undertones may not be as 'PC' these days, though. Speaking of leftist undertones; Captain Planet. Surprised they didn't jump on this already. |

Really, what examples?
I thought they were doing a Thundercats movie? heard it was going to be completly CGI. That would suck. A LOTR epic style Thundercats I'd fucking love. Pirates of Dark Water also. |

Transformers, GI Joe, Voltron's in the pipeline, Smurf's coming up, Thundercats moving along slowly, and perhaps some others.

I can't see why Blade is due for a reboot at all. I enjoyed the first two, but the franchise is from this past decade.
I also don't really see Blade going in a direction that is so superior to where it already is. Their depiction of vampires is really as much as I expect. I'd rather just see more sequels with Wesley Snipes. They still never did Morbius or anything overseas. |

I don't see what about Robocop's undertones wouldn't be PC anymore. It's not like those who are opposed to subversive material have ever really been able to pick up on it. It was always pretty tame and humorous anyways.
Robocop is more "blasphemous" in it's depiction of a mechanical, American Jesus Christ figure, but anyone who would care about that is too stupid to pick up on it. |

Network - George Clooney wanted to remake this a few years ago but it never happened. Even if Clooney isn't involved, I could definitely see someone trying this again.

There are like 6 actors from Seinfeld in Robocop 3, not counting Jeff Garlin from Curb Your Enthusiasm.
I noticed this last time I saw it. I wonder if Larry David secretly cast the movie |

Published by Jeff Leins on October 21, 2010 Colin Farrell, Tom Hardy, and Michael Fassbender are reportedly vying for the lead in Columbia Pictures’ remake of Total Recall. Len Wiseman (Live Free or Die Hard) is directing the return to Mars. The Hollywood Reporter says no offers have been made, but Farrell tops the shortlist of stars to play Douglas Quaid, a man haunted by a recurring dream of journeying to Mars. Arnold Schwarzenegger popularized the role in the 1990 original. Wiseman’s take would be a “contemporary” re-imagining of the Philip K. Dick story “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale.” Kurt Wimmer (Salt, Law Abiding Citizen) unfortunately wrote the new adaptation. Farrell, who recently wrapped shooting on DreamWorks’ 3D Fright Night remake, is gearing up to work this January with Eric Bana on By Virtue Fall, the directorial debut of Sheldon Turner. It may be a tight squeeze if Columbia sticks to a March 2011 start date. Hardy is also reportedly in the mix, but the planned start date certainly conflicts with Christopher Nolan’s third Batman movie scheduled to begin the following month. Hardy is playing an unknown villain in the comic book sequel. Though Hardy’s other tentpole project, Mad Max: Fury Road, has been pushed to early 2012. Which leaves the increasingly popular Michael Fassbender, who is currently playing Magneto in X-Men: First Class and may be lining up a part in Peter Jackson’s two-part Hobbit movies. Middle Earth definitely trumps Mars. With those sorts of scheduling conflicts and no offers out just yet, this looks more like a studio/director wishlist than a trio of viable candidates. While ultimately Fassbender would be the best choice of the three, it’s likely we will see a few other mid-30s names thrown about in the next month. |

I'd rather just watch Total Recall with Arnie. I don't have much interest in a remake, even if it's just an alternate adaptation to the Philip K. Dick story.
If it's to be a totally different take on the short story, why not just call it something else? |

I'm totally into a remake. Think it's an awesome story, and the way they could make it look, sound and feel today interests me. I kinda like Kurt Wimmer also, I don't know why they refer to him 'unfortunately' writing the script, his stuff is pretty good. |
