How did WWE Creative do such a tremendous job on Old School Raw

when WWE creative hasn't done anything interesting or innovative since 2001?

seriously, Old School Raw was excellent. But who was the brains behind the niches and nooks and crannys. Vince? That would make sense. Because I refuse to give creative the credit for it.

It's not like they invented new innovative storylines. They just grabbed some legends and plugged them into the show. It came out great, but the credit does not only go to Creative.

Because they actually tried. They actually tried writing for everyone and including everyone and it made for legends as well as fresh faces to get TV time.

Like, seriously, I marked out for Yoshi Tatsu. No joke.

They didn't really do anything but show some stuff that they used to show. It was a good show, but I wasn't blown away. The only 'legend' that was entertaining to me was Roddy Piper. The rest were just...there...and decrepit, for the most part.

You're all not getting it. I'm talking about the pre-recorded promos that they insert when the wrestler comes out. The attention to detail all the way down to metal chairs. Having interviews out in the crowd. There was alot of attention to detail that creative is not clever enough to have instituted.

And the marketing. It was brilliant.

It was clever, but not really brilliant. All they had to do was watch one old episode and re-create it to a tee.
It's been done before in WWE (ECW One Night Stand), as well as in other forms of entertainment. Throwback night is really about detail, not being creative.
More nostalgia than innovation.

It was pretty great, but I think WWE has done plenty of interesting things since 2001. Just because things aren't as good as they used to be overall doesn't mean there isn't still a lot of good stuff here and there.

Stuff like Elimination Chamber, Money in the Bank, NXT, etc. fall more into the category of new and innovative.

it's all an illusion. All you people were just impressed with the production from the RAW set, to the stage, to the picture in picture promos, to the old school graphics, the guard rails, the red white and blue ropes. All nostalgia

if the same show was done with the current HD RAW set, it would be just your average 950th Episode of RAW with Legends.

they just put all the legends backstage and had them dancing like retards. Sounds like creative to me

It was pretty similar to the 15th Anniversary Raw, besides the production.

Plus the 15th Anniversary Raw had Blackman.

The 15th Anniversary had the benefit of having Stone Cold, Mankind, Hogan, DX, Taker, a taped message from Bret, and Flair involved. And a bunch of others.
Plus cameos from guys like Blackman and Gangrel.

This one had some legends cameos, but pretty average ones that we get all the time. Hacksaw, Dusty Rhodes, Farooq, Dibiase and Slaughter are around all the time.

The old school graphics and details were definitely way better on this one. I loved it.
If you could combine that format with the appearances of the 15th anniversary show, you'd have the ultimate Raw tribute.

It was probably the best RAW since the one at MSG last year, but it wasn't "innovative". It was awesome how much detail they put into the production and appearance of everything.

I'd like to see them try to recreate the set and production style of Nitro or Attitude Era Raw for a night. I don't know if they have the right guys to pull it off though.
Most of them are in TNA.

Although they could probably get some guys to do appearances, like Nash and stuff.

You have to admit that bringing ECW back was pretty innovative. Even if it ended up going sour, resurrecting a defunct promotion and it's title and re-creating most of it's roster and set/venues was pretty exciting.
Especially since it started with RVD winning the WWE title in and ECW ring in the Hammerstein

For serious, I'll say this... Piper's promo with his whole "don't spit on me, John" thing built that whole angle up more to me than everything they had done up to that point.

For me, it was great because there were more characters on the show I connected with and cared about seeing what they were going to do, not because of the writing of the show specifically. I do blame the creative team for not "developing" the new "characters" and writing story lines that get me interested in the new guys though.

Piper's promo was amazing too, don't get me wrong. Plus, hearing Mae Young say sluts and bitches was great and brought back some "realism and emotion" to the segment, (which I think is lacking quite often from a performance and writing standpoint) as well as some great memories.

i missed piper's pit. and it sounds like that was the best part of the show.

i did not like seeing mae young. she's old and barely coherent. she was carried and coached through the whole exchange. that felt very fake, and i was uncomfortable watching her. i want her to put on a glittery sweater and sit down. a lot.

i was very disappointed that she had a match and people like tatanka and simmons had 5 seconds of backstage doofusness. at least they can still move voluntarily.

I marked out for the little attention to detail things more than the skits and matches.

Seeing stuff like steel barricades and that Ziggler interview in that little box on screen was weirdly great.

Same here.

Seeing people like Mae Young, Sgt. Slaughter and half the other legends don't really bother me anymore.

Honestly, I think the fact that WWE's highest rated shows and their highest selling DVDs are retro packages just prove that the only thing they have going for them are nostalgia. If the only way they can get viewers is to cart out legends that can barely move and put up metal barricades, that's kind of sad for the state of current WWE.

That being said, I loved the Old School Raw.

this plays right into the PG thing. the only fans of wrestling are people that grew up watching it as kids. time to latch on to a new generation of kids.

I thought it was the same ole' Raw but for once it actually looked like a wrestling show, presentation wise. I loved the look. They did to go back to basics with the look of the show. The over production, for me, takes away from the show itself. Simple is better, and that HD screen needs to go.
