UFC 127
Dana announced at the presser that BJ Penn is fighting Jon Fitch (who isnt fighting Jake Ellenberger now) next in Australia, and the winner is probably No.1 contender. Main event too.

He also said Denis Siver v George Sotriopoulos and Jorge Rivera v Michael Bisping are on the card.

Fitch would be a HUGE HUGE HUGE test for BJ, either guy could be in for a long night.

I could see a big first round for BJ but then he's gonna wilt if he doesn't finish Fitch early.

I see BJ winning by decision. Should be a good fight though. Siver fight with Sotiropolous is another one I'm looking forward to watching. Good card.

I see B.J. coming out the aggressor which, as we saw with Rampage vs. Machida, will win him points with the judges. He may be able to stuff his take downs early, but if Frankie Edgar could deal with his Jiu Jitsu and take him down, Jon Fitch will be able to deal with his jiu jitsu and take him down. Fitch is bigger, meaner and stronger than Edgar, the one thing he won't be able to do is get in and out like Edgar, but that probably wouldn't stop him from clinching up against the fence. Believe me, if Penn doesn't knock him out early, he is in for a longgggg night.

Not trying to be a dick so please don't take it that way, but when you see long night do you mean Fitch just keeping B.J. grounded and out grappling him or do you mean Fitch being aggressive with strikes and dirty boxing in the clinch. If it's the former, I still think B.J. wins because like I said before he'd be the aggressor and I think Dana will do a good job of getting it in the judge's heads through interviews and his video blogs that B.J. is the favorite son and should be rewarded if he pushes the fight tempo.

Even if it stays standing I like B.J.'s boxing a little more than Fitch's general style. Plus at 170 I think B.J. is going to feel lighter and more comfortable. In that second Frankie Edgar fight he looked like he was trying to run through cement. I may be wrong, but I feel like fighting at 170 suits B.J. a little better.

Fitch will be a great test though and you bring up some good points.

To answer your first post, I mean more Fitch grinding him out positionally, not beating the fuck out of him or anything, but that's what Fitch does better than even Matt Hughes in his prime.

As far as this point goes, I agree he's gonna put Penn against the fence like gsp did, and eventually Penn will wilt if the fight goes long and he WILL get the take down. Fitch is extremely persistant, and although BJ has heavy hands, he is nowhere near as explosive as GSP when it comes to his offence. He can be quick and powerful, but so can Thiago Alves, and we saw where that got him. Thiago also has great take down d, and we also saw where that got him.

In fact, Thiago Alves vs. BJ Penn would be a great fucking fight, tho in that one, I'd definitely favour Penn.

I don't think BJ's ever ever ever fought a grinder like fitch, and fitch will never ever tap, and I don't think you can squeeze that neck hard enough to make him go to sleep.

Dude's boring as fuck, and I go through love/hate phases with him, but BJ has not dealt with this kind of beast.

He's dealt with GSP and Matt Hughes, both who are dominant wrestlers, and other than the one bad beat down GSP put on him, he was able to hold his own pretty well. If by beast you mean a smothering wrestler who can't finish, then yes. Fitch is a good wrestler, but GSP is a stronger wrestler who is better than Fitch in almost every aspect. GSP is able to clinche and work takedowns the way he does because you have to respect his striking. Nobody respects Fitches striking. If BJ trains and doesn't tire in a three round fight, which he shouldn't than I see him knocking Fitch out.

Fitch is in between GSP and Hughes as far as I'm concerned... better than Hughes, not as good as GSP (obviously lol) but what he has the ability to do is lean on Penn, and I just don't think Penn can take that heat. Fitch is massive, and he's a good lean kind of massive, not bulky like Hughes.

As I said, I see Penn coming out firing on all cyllinders, but Fitch's smothering style (we'll call it that) is aided by his unbelievable conditioning and the second and third round of the fight will be his. He is a true grinder and the legit #2 in the welterweight division for a reason.

I mean Penn kicked the shit out of Diego, but Diego's a lot smaller than Fitch and nowhere near as good of a wrestler, Fitch has a very very very good base and I don't think Penn is overly special off of his back, he threatens but he doesn't dominate off of his back.

I can see Penn choking Fitch out if he actually prepares for this fight (doubt Fitch will tap, but it only takes like 8 seconds to put someone out). If not Fitch is gonna wear him down to yet another decision.

Yeah, Fitch just grinds people, he doesn't even look for submissions really, he would rather make love to you. Fitch takes peoples backs and doesn't even do anything with it. You would think someone who spends as much time on the ground as Fitch does would have some high level BJJ, but he would rather bore his oppenant into submission.

Also Funky, I think it is extremely extremely difficult to choke Fitch out.... he's been caught in a few tight situations, where 99 per cent would have gone out, and he fought through it... he's kind of a freak.


At the same time BJ Penn could go in there and mow him down... I'm just saying to count a guy out cuz he's a bit of a dry humper does not take into account the actual skills he has, because to me, really... he's a favourite in this fight.

BJ's submission skills are disgustingly good. Like I said, he could do if he prepares. He really needs to go crawling back to that psychotic old man (dunno his name) and get back into prime shape.

Otherwise, I definitely see it going to Fitch via decision.

But Fitch's submission defense is also disgustingly good, and BJ is not all the special off of his back. He has the capability to sweep guys, but other than that, not so much, and I don't see him sweeping Fitch.

Are you talking about Marv Marinovich? I might be wrong, but I thought BJ left him because his program wasn't all that suitable to MMA and BJ isn't a fan of weightlifting and such.

Meh... B.J. is flakey like that. He started training in Jiu Jitsu with the Gracies and then left them for another place. He won the UFC Welterweight belt and then went to Japan. Had a cup of coffee at AKA and then left that camp. Trained with Marv and then left him.

He's still my favorite fighter though.
