John Cena: A legendary wrestler/actor

John Cena.

The internet world was deadset on John Cena turning heel. It hasn't happened.

John Cena continues to make movies, and I'd have to say that Legendary was actually really good. Don't knock it until you watch it.

Even his own fans are sour on his current gimmick.

What is next for Cena, or what do you feel needs to happen?

There's no guarantee that any change will be successful. I say milk this gimmick till it's bone dry.

Wait, would you count unifying the heavyweight titles as a new gimmick? Like super undisputed heavyweight champion of the universe. If so, then I change my answer to new gimmick.

I don't even know anymore. Two months ago I would've said turn his ass heel, make the Nexus his stable, and have him attempt to take over the WWE. That time has passed. I guess right now he should just keep doing what he's doing until it's truly burned out to nothing (see: Hulk Hogan's "Hulkamania" gimmick circa WCW 1996), and THEN turn him heel. Only problem with that is I can see it backfiring the way Austin's heel turn did after the Alliance angle ended - the fans love his bad assery so much that his heel turn actually makes him a bigger face than before.

I'd have to say its Bone Dry now. Many great wrestlers have gone through heel turns with ease... Cena hasn't done that yet. I mean, Hogan, Foley, Rock, Stone Cold, Nash, etc.. So many come to my mind who were great faces and even greater heels too. Specially Trips.

El Tigre does not have that much rep yet (10+)
Even though the chances of Cena changing are slim to none at the moment, I think taking him off the air is the best option if they ever plan to reinvent the persona.

While him being the "superman for all the women and children" has been good for business, it's slowly becoming stale (I'm pretty sure there has already been a Punk/Cena Fued). Having him off television via an injury or whatever would give the fans a chance to cool off from him, but he'd have to be gone for at least a year and half, maybe two for it to work. After an extended period of time he could return as either a face or a heel and be able to draw big crowds composed of both die hard and new fans.

Also, I think the time away would allow wrestlers like Big Show or Orton to fill the spot of top face. Both are already receiving huge pops from the audience, but aren't able to reach that next level as long as Cena is there.

If it's not broken, don't fix it. He still gets the biggest reactions (whether positive/negative) and he draws.

I'm still not sure if some of the cheering you hear when his music hits isn't recorded into his theme...I've always thought so.

Nothing will change so stop trying to speculate when he'll turn heel or move to Smackdown etc. He's the top face on Raw right now, and will be for some time.

Theyre gonna milk it out until the day comes where the absolutely have to turn him, and even then he'll still get a mixed reaction and they wont. Merch sale talks.

Problem is that WWE doesn't have another wrestler who is as popular as Cena, who sells as much merchandise as he does, who is more in demand with kids as he is...so they really can't turn him now. If another wrestler like him comes along and they can afford to turn him, then they probably will. But I don't see anyone on the horizon who can get to THAT level.

The Nexus angle really rejuvenated the Cena character. As much as I'm not a fan of the handling of Nexus or even the Cena character, the crowds have been pretty hot for Cena lately. For just a few weeks, Cena was vulnerable to a point. And I think that's what they need to do a lot more, make Cena vulnerable. He can come out on top in the end like always, but at least make it seem like Cena can actually lose. Cena's biggest flaw is that he's Superman. Take that away, give him a more serious tone (like his work with Piper a few months ago) when he needs to be taken seriously and keep everything else the same. He'd be more than tolerable to me in that case.

Out of the options listed, I'd say after Mania keep him out until the SummerSlam build. Just two months of no Cena. Let Triple H fill Cena's role for a while. While I'm not a fan of Cena's character and would personally like a tweak, I know that his character sells to their target demographic and I don't have a problem with Cena on top of WWE in the character he has. It could be tweaked to make it less childish, but I wouldn't reinvent the character entirely at this point. Just get him off TV for a bit and make people miss him. Not like he can't go make a movie or something.

Wade Barrett should have waited longer before hiring Cena back so he would run out of money trying to go to every show.

Then we could have segments of "down on his luck" Cena looking for work but being turned away because he is over or under qualified.

Speaking of which, I never understood why once HBK was fired from WWE after the JBL angle, all of a sudden he was working as a chef.

Yes, because at time people have booed him, so in order to keep people thinking he is a beloved face, they MAY do so. Again, I didn't say WWE DOES so, I just said I've always wondered if they do.
