Are you standoffish to get into new series for fear of cancellation?
I am. Right now I have the first episode of Cape on my DVR and I don't know if I should watch it or wait to see how well it does, because I don't really want to get invested in it if it's just going to go away after a few episodes, which tends to happen a lot with new series, especially ones that start mid-season.
So yeah, do you do this or something similar with new shows? ![]() |

Yes. This is the reason I didn't get into Arrested Development when it was on. And a bunch of other shows.

Kind of. More because I don't really pay attention to new shows so I just end up watching shows I have been hearing about for a while.

I can tell you right now The Cape won't last. I have very little interest in it though.
I wouldn't let fear of cancellation stop me from getting into most shows. Sometimes a show limping on is worse than cancellation. Really I say just enjoy it while it's lightning in a bottle, and whatever happens happens. Very few shows end on their own terms, and most go out with a whimper and not a bang. If you can enjoy a show for one or two seasons, and then it starts to suck, or the networks pull the plug, you still enjoyed the show. I don't think it matters at all for a comedy. Cancellation or running too long has no bearing on my existing enjoyment of Freaks N Geeks and The Simpsons, respectively. For something with a story arch that you want to see through to conclusion/resolution, I can see this fear, but why not just roll with it? If a TV show is really good, you will are entertained weekly and it shouldn't really be all about completion. You can also wait and watch TV shows later down the road. That's what I do a lot of times. Watch Twin Peaks or X-Files or something. You know that's not going to get cancelled in the middle. |

I don't get it, tbh. You guys get interested in a show and say, I'm not going to watch this because it might end up getting cancelled? It's just as likely that you're going to lose interest or it's going to end up starting to suck, too.
I say sieze the day. Something like Nip/Tuck is an example of a show I enjoyed a lot for the first 2 or so seasons. Then it jumped the shark hard after that whole Carver thing. I never continued watching it and really have no interest. Did it finally get cancelled? Either way I don't really regret getting into it. It was a blast for those first couple years. I can see waiting a season though. Typically I'd rather just wait til a show puts in a full season so that I know it has a real identity and I can sit down and watch a ton of it. I'm not a big fan of getting one episode a week. I only tolerate that with shows I love where I have to. |

Terminator:TSCC has turned me into a cynic wherein I don't see anything that isn't promised its 3rd season atleast by the network.

I wish more shows would set timetables for how long the wanted to be on the air, rather than just staying alive as long as they can and wrapping it up quickly once nobody cares anymore.

It's not wrapping it up quickly that we are afraid of. It's not wrapping it up at all.

I won't refuse to start watching a show due to fear of cancellation but I won't get ahold of and watch a show that's already been cancelled without a 'proper' ending. This is the reason I haven't watched Deadwood and a few other things.

CSL by not watching Deadwood you are missing out on the best show on TV ever. Do yourself a favour and watch it.
BTW don't bother with The Cape because you think it will be cancelled (and it will), just don't bother with it because it is awful |

I usually catch current running shows once theyve hit syndication. Not on purpose, it just happens this way. Its usually within a marathon or something.

I remember catching up on Newsradio up until season 4. Then I watched it for the first time on NBC for Season 5 after Phil Hartman died. The show was done after that season. I also caught up on the Drew Carey show. By the time I was done and I started watching it on ABC it went on hiatus for what seemed liked two years. Then it finished off after Kate left and replaced by Hugos girlfriend from Lost. Winfred Lauder closed and the show sucked ass until it was put to a painful death. I'm like the angel of death for television shows. Once I start liking them somebody tries to cancel them. This is why I usually wait until there is at least 3 seasons of episodes to watch. They probably won't kill a series without a proper ending after 3 seasons in this era of shows with actual stories....oh wait damn you NBC! Heroes ![]() The last show I watched at the start was 100 questions. It lasted for six episode. |

I do indeed get into series right away, but always have that gnawing dread of cancellation.
Watched Terminator and Dollhouse thinking to myself, KNOWING that it is probably just a matter of time. I've been watching No Ordinary Family, which I am pretty sure is gonna be canceled. Just watched the first episodes of The Cape and loved it, so I'll be watching it, even though I am also pretty sure it will get canceled. |

No, I got into the show Terriers when it was doing horrible ratings and was pretty much guaranteed to be canceled. I'm used to most shows having horribly long breaks in between chunks of the season now, and since everything comes out on DVD, a show being canceled half way through won't bother me. I'll just catch the rest on DVD.

When there's talk and fear about a show potentially being cancelled, I'd say it's a good bet it will be. Sooner or later.

Oh man, Drew Carey Show. That was one of my favorite shows growing up. I hate where they went with it. Winfred Lauder closed and became neverendingstore.com. Drew marries Mr. Wick. Kate leaves and the blond from Titus replaces her [who he rush marries and has a kid with at the very end]. That mad long hiatus, then im pretty sure Drew and Mimi became friends towards the end too. The show was sad to watch after Winfred Lauder closed for sure. |

Would you consider 24 to have been cancelled or ended? They had a pretty good end of the series, but I think it was still a network decision to end it.
They way I see it if a show stops because the writers and producers feel they don't have anything left to say then the show is ended (ex: Lost, Cheers.) If it was a network decision then I would call it cancelled. I agree with Jeritron though once people start talking about a show being cancelled it usually happens. I don't mean just one random person on a message board though and this is the first time I've heard that Fringe was in some sort of trouble. |

I really enjoyed The Cape's opening episodes. Hope they explain more about Chess, like whats up with his eyes.
Terminator:SCC I really hope gets picked up by another network. I think it would do great on FX as they really should continue that series. Now the show that I think will get cancelled is Bob's Burgers, I watched the first episode and just hated it. I was soo bored and nothing was funny at all. |

Yes and No.
Will I still watch the show? yes. But I feel like every show I get into is going to get canceled, so I try to temper my interest so that I don't get as built up for nothing. Some shows I knew wont get canceled, but I still wait to watch t hem so that I can tear through them one after another. Like I didn't watch lost until season 3 so I just marathoned 1 and 2 a week before the opener. |

I was thinking the same thing when Smallville moved to Friday's but it did well, with Supernatural on Friday's now I thought it was over but seems to be doing fine too.

24 was a double edged sword. Did the network cancel it, yes? But with all that they had done over the years you can only spin terrorism so many different ways.

I'd have watched Jack Bauer as a security guard in a supermarket if it meant more 24. I'm not about to look for character development or wonderful arcs or brilliant storytelling, that's why I loved The Wire and The Sopranos etc. From 24 I want awesome lines, people showing up unexpectedly, badass characters and Jack Bauer fucking people up in as many ways possible whilst saving stuff. I am gagging for the boxset since I'm dying to watch it all again and refuse to download them all again.
