MVP (Montel Vontavious Porter) pays tribute to Benoit
MVP wrestled his first match since leaving WWE at a Northeast Wrestling event in Poughkeepsie, New York, defeating his former rival from WWE in the main event, Matt Hardy.
MVP cut a promo earlier in the night and mentioned how he saw only wrestlers backstage, no sports entertainers. During the match, MVP did the three german suplexes followed by the cutthroat gesture that Chris Benoit did and then pointed up at the sky in an apparent tribute to Benoit. After the match, Hardy and MVP congratulated each other and posed for the fans. It’s worth noting that Hardy was not sporting the new hairstyle that he debuted for TNA recently. Any thoughts? I have no problem with MVP doing the moves... but pointing up to the sky, in tribute? |

Benoit was the first person to see something/believe in MVP. He had a great series of matches with him for the United States Championship.

So, in your opinion, what he did as a wres... er, sports entertainer, is not overshadowed by the fact that Benoit was a murderer?

Yes, he is still known as MVP. WWE Hall of Famer Jerry Lawler also worked the card, defeating his former rival Tommy Dreamer in a steel cage match. The finish saw Lawler spit a fireball at Dreamer for the win. Lawler cut a promo before the match, mentioning The Miz and Michael Cole but said he truly hates Dreamer. Other names on the show included Hall of Famer Sgt. Slaughter, former TNA Knockout Roxxi, Sabu and Shane Helms.

Also, with the brain damage information we can't be sure whether Chris was thinking straight when he did it.
Doesn't mean he didn't do it but it might mean he wasn't fully responsible. He might have also been signaling a tribute to his fellow Muslim the Great Muhammad Hassan. |

Doesn't exonerate him a bit. He still made the choices that led to that brain damage.

On topic though, while I really don't care I can't see how MVP paying tribute to Benoit was in any way a good idea.

I'm thinking that M.V.P. has wanted to do that for a very long time..... I have absolutely no problem with him paying tribute to his mentor/friend.......

Yeah, Benoit fucked his reputation by killing himself and his family, but is it fair to say it was the drugs that made him do what he did, and that's not who he really was?
Should we hate on Rey for paying tribute to Eddie? Still, it was the drug use over all the years that caught up with him (Eddie) in the end, doesn't mean he was a bad person his whole life. And yes, I know Eddie didn't kill anyone, but MVP was obviously remembering his friend from better times. |

I wonder how the crowd reacted to it, especially since it sounds like he was working as a face.

I say fuck it, let him pay tribute to whoever he sees as important to him. He didn't do it in a way that was harmful to anyone else and he probably has his own ideas of who Chris was to him, in his life - separate of the terrible things he did. Would I ever do it, fuck no but to me he's simply a guy I used to enjoy watching who turned out to be a complete lunatic.

This thread isn't nearly the can of worms thread I thought it would be. I comment TPWW on their ability not to call your fellow posters names when talking about such a hot button issue.

Its interesting that they found so many empty beer cans in the trash in Benoits Kitchen, and an empty whine cooler next to Benoits body when he had no alcohol in his sytem.
He also reportedly swore against drinking, and was devoted to religion, and treating his family right. It's just an interesting scenario. |

Well MVP just lost all of my support for this little 'stunt'. In no way, shape, or form should Benoit ever be celebrated or praised. The man is a murderer plain and simple and a horrible human being. His 'acomplishments' in life and the Wrestling industry are nothing compared to his actions. Oh and to the comment about "Should we be mad at Rey for tributing Eddie?" that's a completely different story. Eddie Guerrero may have died due to previous drug use, but that isn't equivalent to murder in any way.

What Benoit did is pretty shitty and no one can deny that. Despite the uglyness, the man inspired/supported/helped,etc many people out there. People are bound to be offended by what MVP did and I am sure MVP agrees that what Benoit did was pretty shitty. However, I am sure he has some memories of Benoit. Sir Thomas Malory raped and assaulted some women, does that mean no one should read Le Morte d'Arthur? I am pretty sure MVP praised Benoit for his support and friendship over the years and not the tragic way he left us.
