A new era in wrestling.......
Hulk Hogan winning the title from the Iron Sheik, ushering in Hulkamania. Stone Cold Steve Austin winning the King of the Ring, signaling the beginning of the Austin era. Survivor Series 1997: Vince screwing Bret, which was the catalyst of the Attitude Era. John Cena winning the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 21, introducing us to………whatever this era is. What I would like your 2 cents on is what would be, could be, or should be the next big event that brings forth a new era in wrestling? (You don’t have to just limit it to just the WWE, because I realize that the Monday Night Wars, the nWo, and the rise of ECW also had a hand in creating huge interest in wrestling).

I think if Del Rio wins the title at Wrestlemania it will usher in the youth movement. I know the youth initiative is already under way but a title change at the Grand Daddy Of Them All to a rookie would signify much growth in the new direction.
I'm rooting him on. |

I definitely see your points. I always thought that the Nexus' rise and dominance was the start of something huge. With the young, new talent, plus the diminishing amount of veterans holding on to their "spots" (and not just any spot....not a liver spot.....not a spot like your dog spot........sorry), I feel that it is something to behold. |

I think it's virtually impossible to tell. Nobody predicted the examples you gave. Who knew Austin's KotR win and subsequent promo would kick off somethig huge? It could just as easily have gone nowhere.
That said, a Miz win over Cena at Mania could be one of those moments. The Cena/Batista/Orton generation taking a backseat to the Miz/Morrison/etc generation. |

I like this. Big fan of a step back for the Orton/Cena/Bats style generation. I'm over it. |

We're in a transitional period right now for sure. The next generation is on the cusp, and the old guard is almost completely gone. The current generation is starting to give rubs to the likes of Morrison, Miz, Del Rio, Punk etc and soon (within 3 years) will be the "current generation". This year's Mania could be the turning point. If it's not, it'll be next year.

Eras don't really have a 'start' until we look back on them years later.

But you can see the turning over of the talent. This is the equivalent of 2001 for the Attitude Era, where there's a lot of new talent injected into the roster. It took until about 2004 for them to really take over, and 2002-2003 were the transition years where the likes of Austin and Rock had less and less of a role and guys like Triple H and Lesnar were taking over.

I'm not one to say we have new "era's" persay. I mean, I agree there is a youth movement going on, but it's not to say that the Orton's and Cena's of the world are wold and going anywhere any time soon. They're part of the youth generation in my eyes.
It's people like Edge, Mysterio, HHH, Kane and the departed Y2J and Batista that are seeing THEIR generation end. I guess you can lump HBK and Taker in there too. A fact I think a lot of people are missing here is this. The ages of all these "new era" wrestlers and some guys you claim are in an old era are close. Here is a quick look. Del rio aka Don Caras Jr. - 33 years John Cena- 33 years Sheamus - 33 years CM Punk- 32 years John Morrison - 31 years The Miz- 30 years Wade Barrett- 30 years Randy Orton- 30 years Daniel Bryan- 29 years Kofi Kingston - 29 years These guys aren't going to be taking a back seat for long. What you have right now is your crop of wrestlers that will dominate the scene for the next 10-12 years. Throw in guys like Ezekiel Jackson, Justin Gabriel etc and they're all in their late 20's-early 30's as well. |

The Ortons and the Cenas will be taking the place of the Hunters, Michaels and Takers in a few years. In a league of their own above everyone else.

Yeah. Obviously it's not as defined as Old guys leave, new guys take over. There's an over lap.
Old Guard Current Generation New Generation Hogan/Warrior/Flair > Taker/Bret/Shawn > Austin/Rock/HHH Taker/Bret/Shawn > Austin/Rock/HHH > Angle/Lesnar/Guerrero Austin/Rock/HHH > Angle/Lesnar/Guerrero > Cena/Orton/Batista Angle/Lesnar/Guerrero > Cena/Orton/Batista > Miz/Morrison/Sheamus But then there are still guys that stick around. Hogan/Flair are still around from 6 "generations" ago, as are Taker, HHH, Angle, etc. |

CM Punk eating John Cena on Raw, thereby gaining his super-human strength. Followed by CM Punk eating all members of Nexus and Corre, with Barret as the final victim, and then becoming Perfect Punk... That'd be a new era.
I can't see Cena retiring soon, so someone has to leap frog him to be the main guy. Or as XL put it, overlap. Face Cena (maybe even Orton) losing clean to Miz/Morrison/Sheamus/Punk/McIntyre in a singles match for a world title, in the main event of wrestlemania, with a proper build and no fucking about... That would mark the new era for me. I would very much enjoy if someone who is quite stale at the moment now was able to properly build over the next 18 months into the main event and completely own it. |
