Is Flair the Greatest of All Time?
Just was thumbing through some of my old WWE magazines and found the RAW magazine from August, 2004. In it there's an article titled, "Why Ric Flair's Peers Think He's the Best Ever," and Harley Race, Arn Anderson, Ricky Steamboat, Greg Valentine, Bobby Hennan, Shawn Michaels and Triple H are all asked their opinion of Ric Flair and his place in history. Every one of them responds with overflowing praise and proclaims Flair the greatest wrestler in history.
Shawn Michaels, Flair's closest rival, has this to say: "Ric Flair is the wrestler that's influenced me more than anyone else. He was a villain in the ring, but was still so cool, with the machismo, the wheeling and dealing. He always had the best clothes, the best women, the jewelry and the belts. And from a performance standpoint, he was always the best part of the show. I always tried to pattern my persona and wrestling style after him for sure. I always felt I wanted to be the 90s version of Ric Flair. I was joking with him a while back about how I made a career out of stealing a ton of his stuff and telling everybody it was mine." So what I want to know is: Do you folks here think Flair is truly the greatest of all time? Why or why not? And has his coming out of retirement and going to TNA lessen your opinion or respect of him at all? I think Flair was a great character and entertainer with several memorable moments in wrestling's history, and in his prime he put on some great matches in NWA/WCW. He's obviously a legend and one of the best ever, but I don't think he's the greatest of all time. And I think his going to TNA and making a fool of himself, because he desperately needed to keep earning a paycheck, is sort of pathetic. |
