Super Mario 3DS

Hasney mentioned it in the Videogame News thread but if anything deserves it's own thread, it's a new Mario platformer. True, we know nothing about it yet but I'm sure we'll get screenshots soon and people can start discussing them or what they're hoping for etc.

Hasney said something about it possibley being a SMB3 remake, which I had never considered, but I think there is a chance he could be right. The two screenshots on the left and the use of the tanuki (tanooki?) tail in the logo make it seems so but I can't recall anything like the two screens on the right being in SMB3, though it would be a 3D remake so they'd likely add other areas we hadn't seen before.

I think it looks a little like a mash up. The left screens look like SMB3 but the lower right screen shot reminds me of Tick Tock Clock or a similar level from M64 for example.

Either way we're getting a proper 3D Mario platformer (as in Mario 64 style and not Galaxy style) so, remake or not, that's good enough for me.

Dunno. If it's actually a remake of Mario 3, or a direct sequel to it, I may have to drop the money for a 3DS, but if it's in 3D I won't because I know I'll hate it. Haven't finished a 3D Mario game since Mario 64 because the rest are shit.

I'll pick this up when I get a 3DS.

That is to say after they come up with the 3DSXL4GMini and cut the price.

But still, cool.

Also, which retard suggested the "brand new" Mario title would be a SMB3 remake? Because I have trouble believing it was really Hasney.

I'm certainly not complaining if we get the racoon and Tanooki suits back, BTW. Not like returning concepts or level designs are indicative of much, though. The Mario franchise has built itself with new concepts being assimilated into the general idea since 2 (The American Version based on Doki Doki and the Japanese version). It makes sense both NSMB (If it franchises) and the 3D marios would do the same.

and Xero, it's obviously a 3D title, since one of the points addressed is the ability to hit a block in 3D space.

I've actually heard rumblings elsewhere that Nintendo was either looking into or working on a SMB3 remake weeks ago.

And yeah, since it's 3D, I'll probably just wait a year or two, get the second or third gen 3DS and play it then, if I ever do. Definitely never buying any console or handheld first gen again, unless it's been out two or three years with no announcements.

Why? I've got a launch DS Phat and still play it near daily.

I disliked the Lite, my GBA games stuck out and then the DSi took the slot away completely.

I'm more than happy for a nice launch model. Intend launch hardware always seems to be able to survive anything too.

Same, only problem with the phat model is the screen lighting/colour compared to DSLite's.

I have a "DS Phat", and it's not only missing features from later console, it has a smaller screen and all that shit. I just don't trust anything from launch anymore. I'd rather have one of the later models, but I don't play the DS enough to warrant it.

The GBA SP was far superior to the original GBA. Later 360s > original 360. Etc.

It's also why I haven't jumped on any of the iPad or Kindle craze. I know there's something a bit better around the corner, and once something drops that has the right features, I'll get one.

I don't see the point in having multiple versions of the same thing, nor do I see the need of "trading up". When I get something, I usually hold onto it unless it's utter shit.

The companies have just taught me that I shouldn't get launch shit because there's always something better in a year or two. And I've listened. The 360 debacle was what really put this into my mind, the multiple versions of consoles just solidifies it.

That's not to say I'll never get something at launch, but right now, I can't see getting any game system at launch.

It was nice. Except it had a shittier screen (Two of the screens manufactured were really yellow), comparably poor battery life (Games like Meteos especially chowed the battery), was clunky (I normally like bigger things because of my hands being large, but FUCK was that uncomfortable), had major problems with the hinge, was prone to dead pixels and WiFi issues, and so on.

So a while later, they come out with a ergonomically viable unit with a decent screen, better battery life, and useful features. And, admittedly, even worse hinge issues.

Trading off a slight exposure of GBA carts, which I doubt anyone not named Adrian Monk gives a shit about, seems fine.

It's not as bad as the jump from the GBA to the SP, where the introduction of a backlight practically made it night and day, but it's still bad.

Given the 3DS will likely have a new version in 1-2 years with better battery life (I have a feeling the 3DS will come short of the 3-5 promised hours, like prior units), more reliable hardware (accelerometers and such) at a lower price point....

I don't see many reasons not to wait.

The only example I can name where waiting would be damaging is the PS3.

Another thing with the original DS is that it's impossible to find chargers and styluses for it in brick and mortar stores because Nintendo all but dropped support for it. Which is another huge strike against them for me.

Miyamoto tells Edge that Super Mario 3DS will "a combination of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario [64]" but that, somehow, it's also "completely original." Perhaps because of the heavily hinted at inclusion of raccoon tails, a Mario ability introduced in Super Mario Bros. 3. Let's hope that means full-on Tanooki Suit action.

Super Mario 3DS was first announced at this year's Game Developers Conference in the form of one raccoon tailed logo and four adorable screen shots. Its arrival this year would be fantastic news for Nintendo 3DS owners.
Source.

Cool that it'll be out this year, I'm thinking it'll be out convenietly around Christmas.

Also, notice it's "Super Mario" and not "Super Mario Bros.". No multiplayer?
Mario games ending in "Bros." have multiplayer. NSMB, NSMBW, SMB1, Lost Levels (SMB2), 3 etc. While games without "Bros." are single player. SMG, SM64, SMS etc.

The "real" SMB2 was our Lost Levels. The actual SMB2 had multiplayer.

SMW is 1 out of a dozen or so games. One game not following the pattern doesn't totally destroy it, I'd say.

It uses the same charger as the GBA SP which might make it a little easier. I don't know if it's common knowledge or not.

I got a DS Phat about a year after it came out. Someone stole it, along with 10 games just before the DS Lite came out so I bought one (Lite). The screens were so much better than the original. Plus the top one wasn't as elevated from the bottom. I didn't like the GBA sticking out, but I got over it.

I got a DSi as soon as it came out because half of the touch screen on my Lite wasn't accurate. My wife got one too even though her DS Lite worked fine. I bet she misses being able to buy things.

Also, the first GBA SP wasn't backlit, but was actually front lit. Eventually they released a back Lit SP, which I own, and it's awesome. I love the Game Boy Color, but the GBA SP is probably the coolest hand held ever. I wish I got one when they first came out, but I hated the screen on the original GBA so god damn much that it turned me off on the GBA.

My wife and I each get our own DSes because we play them too much to share properly. I'll get a 3DS when I can afford one or when a game I really want comes out.... which will probably be Super Mario 3D

I'm liking the look of it. Was a release date or period given at all? I can't recall one.

Notice it's Super Mario 3D and not Super Mario Bros. 3D. They've not mentioned a 2-player mode yet.

Looks like New Super Mario Galaxy 64 3D. I am going to try to get a 3DS this year.

Super Mario Galaxy isn't just single player.

I am guessing you didn't give mario galaxy 2 a chance. It was almost as good as mario 64.

Really excited for this game

I wouldn't call the point and shoot thing multiplayer.
