The Strokes - Angles
Took off of work today so I just listened to albums and whatnot



I think everyone predicted this would flop big time. I thought it would flop big time. Shit, after hearing the first few mp3s they released off the album… I was scared this was going to be absolutely terrible. Now I have the full version and I can say that it is a decent album. The Strokes should not try and re-invent the wheel, and on occasion here, they do try to step outside of their bounds. Their little experiments don’t work too well. The album works when they’re The Strokes. When they’re a fuzzy garage band who tried to save rock music a decade ago. Machu Picchu reminds me a bit of Vampire Weekend meets Discovery. Good track.

Under Cover of Darkness is a classic Strokes jam. After that we get a couple of 80’s-inspired jams in Two Kinds of Happiness and You’re So Right, the former, a pretty solid track, the latter, the low point of the album. It just reminds me of some of the dumb twists Bloc Party started to take on their newer releases. They bounce back with Taken For A Fool, and jump back into 80s electro with Games, which sort of works. The two tracks that follow, Call Me Back (a ballad of sorts) and Gratisfaction were kind of forgettable for me. After that we’re hit with Metabolism which is preliminarily my favorite track on the album. We close with a more downbeat Life is Simple in the Moonlight, a solid closer.

It’s a decent album, albeit a bit uneven. As I said earlier, it works best when they do their thing and they don’t try to latch onto a lot of the trends we’ve seen in indie over the past decade. I guess I’ll give it a 7.5. I liked it for the most part. Maybe it will grow on me. I’ve only listened to it twice through.

Fun factoid: One half of Discovery is the keyboardist/producer from Vampire Weekend.

This seems good. Really Fucking Hate the opening track, but the rest is pretty good.

Dunno, it seems really forced and awkward to me. I appreciate what they were trying to do, but it doesn't fit them as a band. Its like when Aldous Snow does African Child in Get Him to the Greek. Worldly for some vague reason. I dunno, it's a catchy tune but it annoyed me a lot.

I can appreciate that. I feel like it was their only "experiment" that worked on the album.
