10 Years Ago Today

Today is the 10th anniversary of what many believe is the greatest wrestling show of all-time: Wrestlemania 17.

It was unbelievable show and I don't think any other PPV has come close to matching it.

You had 4 classic matches in Angle-Benoit, the TLC match, Taker-HHH, and Austin-Rock.

There were 2 other fun hardcore type matches - the triple threat Hardcore title match between Kane, Raven, and Big Show and the Shane vs. Vince match.

Although the match itself was nothing special, the Gimmick Battle Royal was entertaining just because you got to see all those old faces.

Jericho vs. Regal was a solid opener considering the time they had. Eddie Guerrero vs. Test was okay too.

The garbage matches were kept short. The 6-man tag was kept under 4 minutes and the Chyna-Ivory match was under 3 minutes.

Also, the show just had a special feeling with WWF buying WCW just a week before. Most of the feuds heading into this were booked brilliantly, especially the main event, which I think is one of the best built main events ever. Also, "My Way" by Limp Bizkit was a perfect song with a perfect video package to build to the match.

Such a fitting end to the Attitude Era: WWF bought WCW the week before, ending the Monday Night Wars....the 2 biggest stars of the era in the main event.....the 2 guys involved in the biggest feud of the era (Austin vs. McMahon) joining forces....also, probably the 3rd and 4th biggest stars of the era faced each other too (Triple H vs. Taker, although Foley might have something to say about that).

the only thing that was awesome about WM17, was the song in the promo of Rock vs. Austin: My Way - Limp Bizkit. Perfect/Best WM song.

This year's written in the stars is good too..but they keep cutting out Tinie Tempah and looping Eric Turner's part...though he just contributed 2 verses (the chorus)

Unless I'm mistaken, weren't Austin and Rock both faces at the time? I remember everybody complaining about this because the main event was a face versus face match. I thought their match at WM 19 was more entertaining.

Wrestlemania 17 hasn't aged as well as say, Wrestlemania 3. WWE, Inc. used way to many screw job finishes that were on that level during that time and in the scheme of things the first Rock/Austin match at Wrestlemania, Wrestlemania 15 seems to be the more remembered and to me is more entertaining now, than it was live in 1999. The screwjob finish at the end was a shocker at the time, but the angle that followed was an extreme letdown and although it was an interesting route for Austin to explore, was not his best or most successful. I don't think the way to keep Austin as the top guy and change his bit up, was to make him a coward and friends with Vince McMahon after all those years. They could have made him more of a Rattlesnake than ever and fans would have either thought he went to far, or love him even more for going back to his early 97 roots of being a true heel.

The TLC Match as well was amazing, however except the one spot (Jeff Hardy dangling from the rung and speared) I don't really remember to much of the match, probably because we have seen it topped and done better since.

Also I don't really enjoy watching Chris Benoit anymore, maybe that will change but it seems unlikely. I almost feel the same way about Kurt Angle, that he like Ric Flair has tarnished what he established himself as to a large amount of the world, as one of the greatest, maybe THE greatest of all time. Now Kurt is a psycho with illusion's of grandeur and a drug and alcohol problem.

I feel like over time the best Wrestlemania of all time is Wrestlemania III. It's got the best match in Wrestlemania history, the biggest match in Wrestlemania history, and a good taste of what WWE was at that time. Which was a ton of experienced talented CHARACTERS that could entertain a world wide audience. And they did.

The best of the past decade I think would be between Wrestlemania X-Seven and Wrestlemania XIX. Neither are better than Wrestlemania III, nor are they perfect as Lesnar puts a big black eye at the end of 19, and Wrestlemania 17 ends with a screwjob that ended up being one of the most disappointing stories WWE has ever told.

We might as well go for the 90's now.... hm... the first one that comes to mind is Wrestlemania VI, the only thing I remember from this is The Ultimate Warrior vs Hulk Hogan, which is unquestionably one the biggest and best Wrestlemania matches of all time. But that's all I remember.

Wrestlemania X was tops, Bret/Owen and Razor/HBK were top 5 classic matches, then a great brawl with Savage and Crush, and Lex Luger DIDN'T win the WWE title, great show. With a cutting edge feel... I may watch this tonight.

Wrestlemania XII is a personal favorite as it was my first on PPV as a kid, I have fond memories of every match and had a great experience and will always hold Wrestlemania's to this standard. I mean, of course The Iron Man Match which comes in at number two for best all time Wrestlemania matches, next to Steamboat/Savage. Diesel and The Undertaker was fucking awesome and people underrate this match highly, Goldust and Piper was unexplainable and sick, totally didn't understand that at the time and thought Goldust might rape Piper so Piper had to legit kick the shit out of him. Savio/Austin is forgotten but was technically perfect and Austin got over by his skill in that match in Anaheim that night, so did Savio, it's a shame he didn't amount to much years later. Also I remember the 6 man tag which was really fun and great opener for Wrestlemania that year.

Wrestlemania 14 seems to have risen in a lot of people mind but I remember being so upset Michael's lost the title and was going to retire that I actually cried, I hated Austin for about two months then became a follower again. The stealer here is Kane and The Unedertaker, and I was incredibly satisfied with the match and thought it ruled. I don't mind giants wrestling it's cool to me and these guys were great, what a fucking awesome story. Then the forgotten tag title match which continued the tradition which started at 12 with Goldust/Piper and continues to this day.

I think you gotta put 15 up there as well, it was a huge PPV at the time, of the biggest ever and even though at the time it wasn't like OMG BEST PPV ever! Now it seems to hold up quite a bit and is a very entertaining slice of what WWE was all about at the time.

So from the 90's I guess I'd say Wrestlemania 12 is the best....

Wrestlemania 3
Wrestlemania 12
Wrestlemania 19

Now which is best of that, I have no idea. But, I'm thinkin 12.

I've watched WM17 so many times some matches have lost their appeal now to me, but it will always be my favourite i think. Was a total mark back then so couldn't believe when Austin joined with Vince.

That song is a dramatized break-up song, but the music was pretty good. Can't stand Fred Durst though.

WrestleMania X-7 was my first WrestleMania as a wrestling fan, and I still remember it so fondly. Austin turning heel was HUGE, but I feel it was let-down by The Rock leaving to make movies.

Yeah but they tried to work around it by having Vince suspend The Rock. Made the Power Trip even more bad ass cause Vince would just kick people off the show if they got in his way.

Of course they had to bring him back sooner than they probably thought when both Triple H and Chris Benoit went down around the same time.
