Night of Champions Dropped
From PWInsider:
The WWE Night of Champions PPV will be undergoing a name change and has already been officially dropped from WWE's calendar. Whether that name change will include a change of the "every title defended" theme remains to be seen. The PPV formerly known as the 2011 Night of Champions PPV is scheduled for 9/18 at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo, NY. === First Fatal Four Way, now Night of Champions. Don't really have a problem with them dropping the gimmick PPVs, especially Fatal Four Way. In fact I'd say it's a step in the right direction, especially if they're labeling them more generic PPVs (without a gimmick). But NoC was a good gimmick IMO. Probably the only new one, along with Elimination Chamber, that I would have kept. ![]() |

They don't have 8 titles anymore though, so it's kinda pointless. I liked the name, and the idea of it... but it always seemed a little out of place. Night of Champions should be a big PPV on the level of Summerslam, but it's not, just never had that feel to it. I saw WWE had a poll to try and get a new name, I think WWE Vengeance is a good name, especially after Summerslam.

Yeah, I liked the gimmick too.
I'm a bit surprised that it's been dropped though. For some reason, I thought NoC was one their more successful gimmick PPV's. ![]() |

Yeah, didn't mind NoC as a gimmick because it still allowed for variety. But as FragX pointed out, they don't have enough belts to pad the card out.
On the plus side, it means they don't have to switch titles around just to get the guys they want on the card. |

Wasn't vengeance the name of an old pay per view? That would work.
And speaking of Champions.... whatever happened to the proposed World Championship/WWE Title merger? |

And that's still possible down the line. Time will tell. I wouldn't be surprised if they're going for one title merge a year. So this year will be the IC/US and next year will be the WHC/WWE. And I can agree that it wasn't as big as other PPVs when it should have been one of the biggest, and that they needed to move titles around to get people on. But it was still a good concept, and if the titles actually meant something would have drawn huge. If they were going to keep it, I'd say include the King of the Ring on the card, to pad it out a bit. That way all the titles are on the line and the KOTR is crowned (either showing the finals or semi finals and finals). |

Ahh I see. Spanks Xero.
As for the King of the Ring, as much as I would love for that to return to glory as a ppv caliber event, it seems like they've essentially killed it as something important since turning it into a MNRAW thing. |

Well they had to drop it. Otherwise we'd have people thinking the titles were important and stuff.

They should have pulled War Games out last year.
They did 7-on-7 at SummerSlam, there was a 7-on-7 at Bragging Rights and a 5-on-5 at Survivor Series. One of those should have been replaced by War Games. |

I think there were 'insider reports' a while back that suggested that a title merger was being considered.

Probably dropped Night of Champions because they realized that they didn't care about actually booking any title that wasn't the WWE/World Championship.

Its a shame, as this'll be one less time that a US/IC champ will get some PPV exposure.
It was a good gimmick, but in the end, with only 6 titles on the books, the gimmick would either force them to put non championship feuds on the card, clusterfuck the main events (which there are plenty of other gimmick PPVs for) or leaving ME talent off the PPV. None of those are really that great of an idea. |

6 matches probably could have been enough for a PPV if they made them long enough, but WWE probably thinks it wouldn't work

I'm glad. Never enjoyed this PPV. Most matches just felt forced to get the title on the card. I'd rather watch more natural feuds make it to PPV, title or not. Bring back Vengeance I say.

I always felt Night of Champions was a HORRIBLY executed PPV. If they had called it "Night of Champions Retaining" it would have been more reflective of the product the WWE was selling:
2007 (the first year they used the NoC name): Champions were 7-1. Candice Michelle beat Melina in the only title change that night (Johnny Nitro beat CM Punk for the vacant ECW title.) 2008: Champions were 5.5-2.5. Kane lost the ECW belt to Mark Henry in a triple threat that included Big Show, Kofi beat Jericho for the IC belt, and Cody Rhodes jettisoned Hardcore Holly in favor of Ted DiBiase for the World Tag titles. 2009: Champions were 5-3. Christian beat Tommy Dreamer for the ECW belt, Mickie James beat Maryse for the Women's belt, and Jeff Harvey beat CM Punk for the WHC. 2010: Champions were 3-4. Daniel Bryan beat The Miz for the US title, Melina lost to McTaker in a unification match, Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre won a Tag Team Turmoil match while not facing the previous champs (Hart Dynasty), and Orton won a Six-Pack challenge for the WWE Championship. Also, in the only aired non-title match in NoC history, Big Show beat CM Punk. So overall, the reigning title-holder was 20.5-10.5 (19.5-6.5 if you just want to talk about one on one non-unification matches). Was the NoC just at the wrong point in the schedule for decent feuds to have been built that title changes would have an impact, or was it just set up to hype the people who HAD the belts? |

So as opposed to 'Night of Champions Retaining', you'd have preferred 'Night of Champions until the Champion loses and isn't Champion anymore'? I don't see why you'd think guys retaining belts is a bad thing, the show was promoted as having titles on the line in all matches or something similar.

I just want there to be SOME unpredicatability to the card, and 4 out of 4 times I found that lacking at NoC.

I always find the term 'unpredictability' being used in regards to wrestling was a tad hilarious. Everything is essentially predictiable since there's only a finite number of possibilities that a.) make sense in terms of the stories or b.) will lead to more money being made. You may not always predict everything wrong but that doesn't equate to the product needing to throw more curveballs at you. Hell, when the WWE has tried stuff that no one saw coming, I've never seen so many sh*tstorms being tossed about from the online community about how it didn't make sense or some other crap.

I liked Bragging Rights, but they can easily do the concept at Survivor Series. I think that time of year suffers from clutter, which would probably have at least some effect on how the PPVs do during that period. But Night of Champions was a good idea that was poorly executed. I say poorly executed just because at the time of the PPV the WWE hadn't thought ahead and really booked guys into championship matches. Also, with unified titles, it becomes a bit harder. Now, they could just get the champions to work longer matches, as most WWE PPVs these days are only seven matches long anyway, but I can understand why they just decided to bin the name -- they can keep the concept, without it being "official," so they can throw in a feud that will draw more, etc.
I still don't see the WWE doesn't have King of the Ring as a PPV these days. It'd be something different, and with the right amount of promotion and the right push for the guy who wins (ie. Perhaps them going on a losing streak right after winning isn't the best idea), the concept could be one of those "can't miss" events every year AND could feed other PPVs (if the King gets a title shot at the next PPV or something). |

So will there be a gimmick to Uprising? Is it about underused talent finally getting a PPV of their own? Think Superstars, but on PPV? Or will it lead to a new stable, ala the Nexus when it first debuted?
Too many questions!?!? |
