The absurdity that was late WCW

A friend and I recently decided that we wanted to go back and watch just how bad wcw was toward the end. I know that I watched every nitro until it was over but i didnt remember a lot from this period. So far from what I have seen, it was worse than i could have ever remembered. I know this has been discussed numerous times but i dont recall ever seeing some of these specific examples so i just wanted to run down what i have seen so far, and get your opinions on the crap that was goin on. I know you guys dont usually listen to people with no posts but i have read this site for awhile and just wanted some discussion from you guys on the pure shit that is going on, leading up to Russo's initial demotion. When I started typing it actually went a lot longer than i thought i was going to,and i only got about halfway through the first episode of January, i would like to finish the episode and the month to see what you guys have to say about it all, but if its too long winded and you want me to shut the fuck up just say so, if anybody wants to hear the rest(Trust me it gets a lot worse) just let me know.
We started in late 1999, I am going to skip over that as i would rather not even get into the ridiculousness of of roddy piper laying on top of goldberg as the referee counts 3 and awards bret hart is 2nd world title and the new nwo is formed with jarrett, hart, hall, and nash. I will rundown the first episode of the year 2000.

There is a lethal lottery tag team tournament going on for the tag team championships. Tonight we will see the quarter finals, semi finals and finals. The bracket looks like this. On one side we have Mike Rotundo and Buzzkill vs. The Harris Brothers and PG 13 vs. Steiner/Nash. On the other side we have have Lash Leroux and Midnight vs. David Flair and Crowbar, and Norman Smiley teaming with Asya to take on Buff Bagwell and Kanyon.

The show starts with Buzzkill/Rotundo v Harris bros. Standards and practices come out and cover up leia meow, the varsity club gets distracted and the harris boys pin buzzkill. THERE WILL BE A NEW COMMISSIONER TONIGHT we find out. Bret Hart arrives and gets beat up by Sid who the NWO ran over with a monster truck just one week ago. DDP IS HERE and he is pissed that Buff has been puttin his stuff all up inside Kimberly. Hennig tells page the powers that be need him in the ring. PG 13 is out for their match, page is out, beats em up, steiner and nash walk out for the pin. The NWO is out, Bret and nash cut decent promos, steiner rambles somewhat coherently. I can only assume that Hall is off the wagon at this point. A limo pulls up presumably with the new commish inside. Crowbar/Flair vs Laroux/Midnight up next. Stevie Ray and commentary is good for some unintentional comedy.Stevie Ray turns on Midnight and then Booker T. The ref is distracted and even though its 2 on 1 at this point i guess flair crowbar still need the Mamalukes to jump in and beat up laroux. Ref misses it all. Flair/Crowabar advance even though Schiavone isnt quite sure who won. Mamalukes beat up Laroux again in the back

Luger is comin to the ring dressed like Sting with Liz. He wants a challenge. Here comes Tank Abbott. Liz mases him and they leave. JERRY FLYNN IS OUT! He beats up the blinded Tank. You can imagine how much the crowd is into this. Some guy named Rob Carter or something like that is out to announce the brand new commish! This guy clearly has no on screen presence. And the new commish is............Terry Funk!................................... The fans seem like they could care less....until he starts talking and is immediatley booed even though he is supposed to be a face, he really doesnt make alot of sense for this role. He wants to stick a skyrocket up Vince Russo and Ed Ferrara's exhaust and blow their head off, but he cant do that without help! And with that he introudces his new enforcer Arn Anderson! Pretty good pop for Arn as you'd expect but as soon as he gets in the ring he is serenaded with WE WANT FLAIR chants and thats about as much as they get into it. The NWO is out now. Funk adds some stips to brets souled out match, even though we know that match is not gonna happen, and he also announces that Jarrett will defend his US Title tonight against Sid in a powerbomb match! Funk says he will make sure Nash and Steiner get screwed out of the tag belts. Nash tells Funk he thought he was dead. Some more old jokes, then nash gets pissed and says they make the rules. I will stop there for now, like i said before if anybody wants to hear the rest of the show let me know, it not, let me know that too.

Ehhh, the attempt was rather good and thoughtful just not really going to be appreciated on the TPWW boards.

Welcome none the less, you will probably be a well liked poster here sooner than later.

I watched alot of the final days of WCW, but still didn't remember half of it. They were on cruise control so much, I was watching but not really paying attention. About a year ago, I bought the "Death Of WCW" book and laughed at all the nonsensical, weird, and overall dumb ideas. Even more ridiculous is the amount of money WCW lost in the last couple of years. And when they had good concepts or characters, they booked it so horribly it was beyond repair.

I laughed so hard, I pissed a little.

Really, I forgot about half this crap... and years out of context, it's even more hillarious! Just from this, there's a tag-team tournament with some teams made of random people, such as IRS and the "almost Road Dogg".

This era in WCW = what is this i dont even

WCW wasn't that horrible after Halloween Havoc 2000 till the end. But yeah. Anythin between mid 1999 to late 2000 was absurd.

It is couldn't care less. Anyway, good article. I posted a similar threada few years ago when I re-watched a taped episode of Raw from the February before Wrestlemania 17, and I really enjoyed the show. It was pretty easy to see how the divide between the WWF and WCW was so great at the time.

I can't find too many videos from this particular nitro but here is the main event of the evening. The finals of the tag title tournament and the aftermath. It gets pretty good a little after the 3 minute mark.

I'm pretty sure there's a guy or two who has posted every Nitro and hunder and WCW PPV from '95 to the buyout on youtube. I've favorited the channels......it makes a substitute for current wrestling shows.

Yeh wcw was horribly bad in 99 even before Vince Russo & Ed Ferrera entered wcw. The talent like Big Show & Jericho left in 99. Plus Eddie Guerrerro, Perry Saturn ,Chris Benoit &Dean Malenko going in 2000. Storylines were bloody terrible ...same stale storylines they were trying 3 years before. NWO was brought back way too many times even when Vince McMahon brought it in WWE in 2002. As for David Arquette winning the title that was just plain friggin stupid. Glad wcw finished when it did..horrible to watch near the end.
