Why didn't Colt Cabana/Scotty Goldman get over first time around?

Now, there is little doubt about the talents of Colt Cabana along internet wrestling fans. However, we all saw his initial WWE run (initial, because I hear WWE is picking him up again or may have already resigned him) went pretty...flat.

What can WWE do different about him, next time around? Is Colt even worth their time?
Any thoughts?

I think they fucked up by debuting him randomly on SmackDown. ECW had started its "New Superstar Initiative" thing at that point and he probably would have had an easier time getting noticed there. He'd have gotten the chance to work longer matches along with getting backstage segments or promo time. Would have been a better choice than Ricky Ortiz or Braden Walker.

Red face

He's still never going to amount to anything. Not really an insult, just he's an entertaining mid-carder for life with occasional top level match, possibly riding on Punk's coattails.

He's absolutely worth their time. He is never going to be World champion but he's pretty much a perfect fit for the "PG Era". He's talented, creative and entertaining enough to stay under contract for the rest of his career and evolve/change it up when needed whilst there. He can do legit entertaining comedy stuff that most of WWE's audience will never have seen whilst still in the confines of a "legit" match and he could really get a response with it. He can play a Piper-style role of "moderator" for plenty of top line feuds with a talk show type segment of his own, he could be a good assistant to and eventually a good authority figure/GM, he has the links to Punk (top line babyface Punk with Colt as his sidekick could be dynamite for a while) he's a "student of the game" so he'd be good for DVD's and the roundtable stuff, he could commentate, he can do online stuff (he's more entertaining across the board than Zack Ryder for example) and can do serious when he has to should he ever get the chance to go in a different direction etc etc. He's simply too well-rounded, entertaining and well-travelled in an era of guys made by WWE to not have a job.

I agree with everything except Cabana being more entertaining than Zach across the board. Ryder has been on fire lately and EXTREMELY fun to watch, woo woo woo, you know it Colt!

I don't think he was given muc of a chance, even if he's liked by most internet fans. Most of the superstars at that time didn't really get much of a shot, it was a point where they were trying to get a lot of new wrestlers over. Most of them ended up getting shafted. If anyone remembered Ryan Braddock, I kinda liked him. He was suppose to be a tough no nonsense wretler, and had 2 matches and was released

Because he didn't have the IWC blowing smoke up his ass, as he does now thanks to being CM Punk's friend.

It is pretty funny that no one, NO ONE, seemed to give much of a shit about him until Punk gave him a shot out.

Anyways, he didn't make it because WWE didn't create him, so they had to re-create him. And they don't know how to do that.

His first run was...weak. They didn't really give us anything on Scotty Goldman except for mildly entertaining promos shown during his entrance. You never would have known the guy was meant to be good.

I honestly don't know how I would bring in Colt Cabana now. I'd probably use the Colt name, since Punk has brought it up. CSL has the right idea, but I don't know if I'd want Colt and Punk as an on-air duo right now. Maybe they can make Cabana work through NXT, or something first? That'll keep him busy for a few months.

yeah, that's not true. There have been plenty more people that didn't know about him who are now curious as to "what he's about" but plenty, here and elsewhere, have known of/been a fan of/been praising him for ages.

Awesome point I agree with for the most part, but there isn't a guarantee they would have pushed Cabana on ECW. Case in point: Shannon Moore. Trust me, it's relevant.

He got vignettes, new music, his TNA "Prince of Punk" gimmick, and what looked to be a coming singles push that didn't involve Matt Hardy. Then, they signed CM Punk. Couldn't have two guys with "Punk" in their moniker... might confuse some folks. So, they have Phil come in, bitchslap him both verbally and physically, and job him out on his ECW "re-debut". Then, I don't remember hearing about or seeing him again until he was back in TNA. Yeah, they jobbed Shannon Moore out- a guy they looked to be about to push to the moon- to a guy who looked to be "some overrated indy star who will never be world champion".
