Austin baby, Austin!
So I've been rollin through all the Raw is War eps of 1999 (Ah memories). The crowd is amazing! They knew when to cheer or boo. FUCK basically anything back then was "HOLY SHIT A FINISHER/SIGNATURE!" So I busted out my old N64, popped in No Mercy and realized Stone Cold had an awful moveset. Watching the old Attitude Era I noticed the game got it right.. right? How did Austin get over with such bland moveset?
Agree, disagree, discuss.. What was it about him that got over, coz it wasn't a bunch of suplexes. He was a story based character. His fueds were primary over his ability. Don't get me started on the ol' piledriver attempt on the concrete. He was always considered a brawler... Now I never saw him before his Ringmaster days but he's.. well bland... Go ahead, post some of Austin's best moves from the WWF/E. |

Hogan yes, BLAND! Rock was always an exciting wrestler to me tho. There's always the Rock Bottom and PC elbow but he pulled out the Samoan Drop, Spine Buster and it started as a float over but Rock's DDTs were always badass.. That with his promos made me a early Rock fan.
But hey this thread was about Stone Cold. Go!.. |

Austin wasn't "always" considered a brawler. Especially in his Hollywood Blonde days.
Yes, Austin was a story character. He did have a limited moveset. Vastly because of his neck, but also, much like Cena, his character called for him to wrestle that style. Wrestling isn't about the moves you pull off, but how you pull them off, when to pull them off, and when not to. Austin was a true wrestler in that regard. And he had amazing psychology inside the ring as well. |

Even then, he was still a "brawler". But he wasn't limited and did a lot more in the ring. |

Steve Austin has always been a great worker and the brawling style worked well with the Stone Cold character. He is a very talented in ring competitor and can go hold for hold as he has alot of technical ability as well. He's one of the best things to ever happen to professional wrestling. The Rock has always been entertaining in the ring and he has had several great matches with great technical wrestlers as well. He does have a modicum of technical ability and it showed in his matches with Austin, Angle, Benoit(especially here), HHH, Jericho etc. The Rock is one of my favorites as well and I always thought he was one of the best things to happen to wrestling. I always liked Rock better, but Steve Austin is the man.

Read up about Austin before his last match at Wrestlemania 19. Balls of steel. Although he had a lot of less bright moments in his career, that was pretty ballsy. It's part of what got him over, being the "bionic redneck," Austin always looked like he was a robot programmed to fuck up as many people as possible. I could watch about 20 stunners in a row without going "Okay, damn," as opposed to someone like Cena, where the first AA is enough to make me hurl.

Did Austin ever have a signature submission hold that he's busted out in more than one match? I can't seem to recollect any.
