How important is it to you that a band be good live?
As a musician myself, I find this very important. Sure, a band can be good in the studio, but it really impresses me when the band is better live than they are in the studio. If a band sucks live, I get turned off.

As a musician who himself can't play live very well, you mean.

I wouldn't totally turn off a band if they suck life, but I certainly appreciate those who sounds just as good or better when live, such as Nevermore.

So you're trying to prove how much you suck? Because those were...What's the word? Ah, yes...."LOL." And yes, even the shitty studio version sounds better than that live version.
Also, My Life For Hire? There's like five bands with that name. |

Its very important for me. Its a test of how good a band really is so has to be important if you want to be taken seriously, imo.

I couldn't care less because if they suck live, I simply won't go and see them or listen/watch live performances. I guess it's nice if your favourite bands are a good live act though

It's important, but it wouldn't put me off a band if they were rubbish live.
It's mostly genres like heavy metal where the fans 'need' that energy. Like... if someone goes to see a band and the members just stand there playing their instruments, not that they're not passionate or enjoying themselves, they're just not very animated... a rock/metal fan would likely be turned off by this. Of course if it's an issue with sound etc, then obviously it's a number of things; crappy soundman? Crappy venue? Crappy band? |

It's important. I go to a lot of shows, but there are some acts that are kind of "bedroom" musicians or whatever so I don't expect them to have an incredible live show. That doesn't mean they aren't good musicians because they're typically doing mixing/manipulating/audio editing/layering that requires a lot of skill as well.
Point being, it doesn't ALWAYS dictate the talent a band or musical act has; depending. Then again, I've seen some real minimalist acts that put on a really good live show. The show isn't always about "technical" skill or instrumentation. Rappers generally aren't going to feature any instruments but they can put on a good live show. Though I'll say the Beastie Boys were probably the most impressive hip hop act I've seen live and they DID play instruments. Diamond Rings puts on a good live show, and it's just one dude with a guitar and some synths/synth drums. He has a ridiculous persona, dances like a maniac and has a great voice, so he puts on a good show. Atlas Sound is very much a "studio" project, but holy fuck, Bradford Cox is incredible live. It's amazing the sounds he makes with an acoustic guitar, a harmonica and a bunch of pedals. Sounds like an entire band, by himself. Dan Deacon too, all manipulation and twisting dials but he makes the show participatory so it's incredible. I guess I'm kind of negating my argument in some ways. I guess what I'm saying is it is important. And even acts that rely heavily on production CAN put on a live show if they are innovative. Acts like that typically are innovative anyway. I can still enjoy a musician if they aren't great live. 99% of the time you hear the songs, they're recorded. I just won't see them live. |

come on, you can't say you didn't see this coming. people here generally think your band is terrible, and then you post a live video which was just bad, in a thread about the importance of talent in live performances, and you're actually getting defensive when people criticize this sort of posting?
a little foresight goes a long way. |

i'd be upset if i paid good money to see a band live and they sucked but then some great studio albums are so elaborate that it would be impossible to pull off properly live anyway. i find backing tracks being used at a live show more offensive than a bad performance.

I'll usually buy a band's live album before I determine whether or not I will go to their show.

I still buy albums and LPs.
I like having it in physical form, with artwork and the booklet with lyrics because I like to listen to the music while reading the lyrics. I like having a collection of the music I own and I like pulling out a CD and putting it on. I don't see the point of paying the same, or close to the same amount of money for an album in MP3 format when you could get a CD to put on the shelf for the same amount. |

It's not a dealbreaker but I find it very important. In a time when studios can make anyone sound competent, live music is where you find the real talent of a musician. I have seen a couple of my favourite bands at the time and they totally sucked live but I still love the records.
Just so happens that they are no longer my favourites whilst the guys who I can see are great live are at the front of the queue. |

I believe to play songs live as well as in the studio is you got to have the hard work ethic, passion, confidence, and the raw energy, so your performance can shine.
