bret/shawn dvd discussion thread

since its already been ripped and uploaded on the net I thought we'd get a head start with a discussion.

Not so long ago the idea of Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels working together on anything was far fetched. Fast forward to present day were HBK &Bret Hart are passed their differences and even seem to be on friendly terms.

This dvd documents their infamous entwined destinies from the beginnings as friends to their bitter rivalry that surpassed their fictional ones.

Although the jaded among us will say they have heard enough about this topic the truth is that it is probably the still the most talked about subject of wrestling lore.

your thoughts...

I wonder how much of it will be the honest truth, and not something they agreed on before hand to say.

I watched it the other day and they really gloss over all the juicy shit. For example, they mention the Sunny days comments, show an image of Sunny, and then talk about how that comment was over the line but never really get into the story. It was that way with alot. They discuss Montreal, and a few other topics, but in my opinion it was kind of a letdown. Granted, the matches may make up for it, but the documentary was ho-hum to me.

I feel like Wrestling With Shadows and the shoot interviews given by Shawn and Bret over the years provide about as much light on the issue as we'll get in terms of juiciness and heat.

WWE's watered down version of the story doesn't do it for me.

Part of the big deal about this documentary is that they're sitting next to each other giving an interview. It might not be as big as the moment they shared in the ring when they finally reconciled, but it's a nice memento of that time in wrestling history. The screwjob match was one of the most famous matches of all time, up there with the likes of Hogan vs. Andre. While Bret was always pretty candid about things over the years, Michaels wasn't. I think Shawn finally got to say his peace and it was nice to watch.

Bret Hart was my childhood hero. I hated Shawn Michaels for a long time. He earned my respect as one of the greatest wrestlers of all time as I grew older and began to realize wrestling was staged. But this interview really added more meat to the idea of me actually liking him. And it was done without any ass kissing on either side.

You also have to keep in mind that this is a series, The Greatest Rivalries. You'd be hard-pressed to find a more appropriate way to launch it. Rock and Austin have had the spotlight on their rivalry for years, and in a conventional way. Hart and Michaels had interviews, columns, rumors, and all sorts of other outlets, but never together. And never with the WWE's name on it. And why shouldn't they put their name on it?

Anyone who was a real mark like I was in the 90's will appreciate this for what it is, which is a moment to set things right between the two greatest ring artists ever to wrestle in one.

I've just watched the entire documentary.

If you watch it and see the cut aways shots you will understand that Michaels still has a need for validation and respect from Bret. His body language on the street shots of him always turning to Bret shows that he still has a lot of respect for Bret.

During the documentary the word respect is brought up a lot of times and the ultimate psychological factor for Shawn was that he needed "the pat on the back from Bret". I also think that Shawn is indeed a humble man inside who's ego is/was driven by his approval seeking -especially from Bret Hart.

his need for it was to the point that it blurred his reality and perception so much so that he couldn't tell when Bret was "working" or "shooting" on him. In the end these two guys seem to regret that they didn't do business together. Shawns one comment "I appreciate that but I'm not willing to do the same for you" was the line that pushed Bret over the edge when he offered to put Shawn over and Shawn disrespected Bret with the aforementioned comment.

the documentary did gloss over a lot of the main issues but it still manages to capture the bigger picture. I think that Shawn is just happy that he finally got to say he is sorry to Bret and have Bret give that respect.

I liked it. The most interesting parts were pre screw job. It still felt like they would not bluntly say what had happened. They gave most of the truth but it is unknown how much of the truth they gave.

Bret was great at speaking for the most part. He gave some insights into the wrestling business and spoke like a knowledgeable man.

Shawn was not as fun to listen to. He just cant get to the point when he speaks. It is really confusing and hard to listen to him talk sometimes. I just do not like it.

They both become way to winded at times.

JR did great too. Towards the end I think he could have been much better. Their analogies were a bit silly.

I will probably watch it again.

This documentary had the potential to be WWE's golden video release. It is everything, a shoot and work. What happened with these two wrestlers transcended the wrestling world.

That being said this documentary should have or could have been up there with any 10/10 documentary (such as Fog of War, Senna, and Touching the Void). It is a shame that WWE squandered this opportunity for greatness.

How could it have been better? A real documentary production company, director and producer should have been brought on board to film and complete this thing. WWE gets close but it just close enough to let you down in that sense. JR was ok but they needed to higher an interviewer that knew both the wrestling world and how to pull out drama from people, how to get what they wanted from them and what we wanted from them. They needed to film more aside from them sitting together, for example interviewing them candidly on the street or in a house just asking revealing questions. The production was ok but also somewhat amateur. There is a moment towards the end of the video where the boom mic drops into frame. The narration voice is retarted. It sounds like they are trying to sound professional rather than just being professional.

This video should have been the absolute in relation to this subject, it should have been to us what the bible is for Christianity. Yet what we recieved is something closer to a supplemental piece used to fill in some grey areas as to the knowledge we have accumulated over the years.

Bret and Shawn changed the business yet they glossed over this or glossed over the high points. I want nitty gritty. I want them to talk about working together, how they set matches and many other backstage things.

The whole time I felt like there was a missing piece. Vince. Vince should have been involved in telling this story as well. He should have dropped his insights in relation to their early career and continued doing it until the end of their career.

Overall this feels like a rushed production and we know that it was. JR announced it and it seemed to be completed within weeks. I'd say the mostly lengthy process in creating this would be editing the summary clips and pulling archived footage for them. This is a WWE production and when it comes to WWE outside of wrestling they don't yet know how to excell. They simply are a wrestling company trying to be bigger than that. They are not.

Documentaries usually take years to film and complete. WWE's approach shows through, their approach being that it only takes weeks to complete a documentary.

He wasn't just working with Davey Boy and Owen, he also had some other feuds, although much of them didn't have a championship involved (examples: Jerry Lawler, Bob Backlund, Jim Neidhart, Hakushi, etc.).

Even though he wasn't the champion, he was always at the very upper mid-card, always near the main event. And he was always willing to make something good out of the feuds he was in, giving 100% everytime.

So I just watched it, loved it, and am so glad that WWE made this DVD. Truthfully there is SO MUCH that I wanna hear them talk about, so all that aside what they gave us was really awesome.

It is a kind of beautiful relationship between the two, bringing them both to tears when discussing the most infamous event in wrestling history. Like it or not it shaped both men's lives personally and professionally.

I can't believe what a prick Shawn was back in the day, but I'm also glad to learn that they worked themselves into a shoot and not everything we saw on screen was "real", until well, it got real.

Bret was a genius to drop the title to Shawn, go become a TV star and then return with his new attitude and have the first ever and biggest ever face/face feud. And Shawn fucked up that plan by being immature and not separating reality from fantasy, all the while Bret is thinking he's working everyone in the business but Shawn, it turns out Shawn was really hurt by a lot of things Bret said, which made Shawn become the ultimate prick and we all know the outcome.

Coolest part is Shawn throwing Trips under the bus and revealing his backstage power in saying "You know what we gotta do right?" and in 97 Vince McMahon takes this horrible idea from Triple H of all people. Fucking incredible. Now he's the boss, so weird.

I love Bret and Shawn and I really enjoyed the DVD, it could be more but Montreal really has to take center stage. For instance I'd have liked to know more about their thoughts early on and indepthly discussed matches like Survivor Series 93, or 92.

Also the DVD is VERY professional but I wouldn't have minded Jr. to be a little bit more "tell all". Guess I'll wait for his book for that.

I firmly believe that HBK is self-conscious about his balding, so he always wears a hat (except at the HOF Induction, and I'm sure they helped him cover it).

The clothing, though, is horrendous. It's like he pulled up to WWE Headquarters on a tractor the day of this interview.

I'd call it a bit late in the day to start critiquing HBK's choice of dress...

In all seriousness, I feel that his balding had to do with him retiring. (SRS)
