If somehow things turned out how they are right now without Steve Austin, and Stone Cold Steve Austin just came out today, he'd be out shadowed by "the originator of the pipe bomb" CM Punk. Austin would have been stuck in midcard hell for quite some time, perhaps until someone gets injured to free up a spot.

I don't know. I mean, I like to think that true talent shines through eventually and finds a way to get over. I just don't know exactly how he would have made it. I'm sure he would have "made it". Just tough to gauge the level of stardom.

I could see him being what Randy Orton is right now though. A little more over maybe and better on the mic.

I think he still becomes a star in this day and age though, for the criticism the "experts" like to give Vince/WWE, the cream still always rises to the top. That just wasn't the case in WCW.

Austin had some of the greatest promos ever under his belt, he could thrive in any era.

Austin was always good. Only thing he needed improvement on was his promos and working with Pillman did a great deal on that front. The plan was going to be putting him with Harley Race, and he DEFINITELY would have improved on the mic with him. |

Austin did have some experience in a PG setting considering both WCW and WWF were PG in his early days although if he was to arrive now, he'd have to deal with a pretty stacked main event scene and Cena as the dominate star on both Raw and the WWE.
He could easily become a top star quickly on Smackdown although Raw probably would take a bit longer. |

nah, i'd say Austin would make it in any era. Austin is just so far above his peers at any time that he grows to become the man.

Austin could have been a star in any era with the right gimmick and push. But could Stone Cold Steve Austin? I'm not sure to be honest. The character was a total right place right time type of situation, wrestling fans had grown up and so Austin was the most "grown up" and bad ass of any character, so they latched onto him.
He would have never been as big in WCW, or obviously ECW. What happened to him in WWE wasn't supposed to happen it just did. I highly doubt that could be recreated ever again. Something big may happen but it won't be Austin 3:16, it will have to be originally all on it's own. |
