Things we liked about the WCW
The NWO, in the beginning, was one of the greatest and most successful angles in the history of American pro wrestling.
The Foour Horsemen were the blueprint for probably every heel faction that has been created in the last 15-20 years. WCW always did a much better job with the cruiserweights than the WWE has ever done. Mike Tenay was always a very knowledgeable commentator. |

Cruiserweights.
The Monday Night Wars. Anything that could make Vince shit himself and actually work to make the show better is a good thing. Sting. Cruiserweights. Competition. More wrestling in a week. Cruiserweights. |

I liked how many of the matches featured actual wrestling while the WWF was still doing their silly soap operas on the flip end. WCW matches were somewhere between 7-15 minutes long when WWF matches were only 3-4 minutes. I liked the jobbers, and I liked the silly gimmicks like Glacier, Mortis, and La Parka. Yeah, I even have a soft spot in my heart for woefully pathetic gimmicks like the KISS Demon and Maestro. And I liked the match where someone launched a cup of beer at Dennis Rodman's head.

WCW dying was the worst thing that could have happened for the wrestling business and evidence shows it. Why people say that was the best thing about that company baffles me, Oh yeah, wrestling fans are morons so it doesn't.

They had the Saturday afternoon show. Usually the wrestlers on there sucked but sometimes they'd have good matches and would show what I missed during the weekl.

First off, even at their worst, they were an alternative to the then-WWF.
Kanyon as the "Innovator Of Offense," as well as "Positively Kanyon." Cruiserweight Matches. "Sugar" Shane Helms. Even though it was too late for them financially and ratings-wise, when they finally gave younger, and/or more interesting talents a chance like Booker T., Lance Storm, Scott Steiner, and Jeff Jarrett. The Natural Born Thrillers as well, with their mic-skilled leader, Mike Sanders. The last incarnation of the Filthy Animals was pretty good too. Disco Inferno played a likeable geek in that group, and their silouhette entrance w/exploding pyro was very creative. Crowbar and Daffney. DDP, and his trusty, never-see-it-coming, diamond cutter. The Cat as WCW commish, and the attempted sneak attacks by the Jung Dragons. I liked it when Ernest would ask "Where the hell is that music coming from?" "Screamin' Norman Smiley" as Hardcore Champion. |

What did I like about WCW? The fact that it was the last federation to truly appreciate the art of professional wrestling. Even with the idiotic booking of Ole Anderson and the nefarious politics of Hogan and his ilk, in WCW the wrestling itself always held more importance than the storyline (until Russo came along) Sure, the hogging of the main event scene sucked, but the midcard almost always packed outstanding matches (hell, I rarely ever watched a Nitro main event unless Sting or Goldberg [yeah, sue me] was in it)
The WCW/NWA World Heavyweight Title (before Russo got his mits on it) had a long, rich history, held by some of the greatest wrestlers of all time. The promotion had its own deep history and sense of tradition, which was something Vince McMahon never offered. Its wrestling actually meant something, not just a 5-minute stall until someone hits their finisher. Even if they were overlooked by the bookers and management, many of its workers were brilliant and dedicated to perfecting their craft. There's a lot of crap to sift through, but looking at the workers there, you could see talent in its earliest and most exciting form. That's why I always tuned in for the first two hours of Nitro, usually without flipping to Raw until the last hour. Despite all of its faults (and there were tons of them), WCW was the last bastion for a dying art. And when it died, the art in wrestling died with it. |

Yeah, I liked the look of the US Title back in WCW. The WWE version looks like something Captain America threw out.

This, is why I miss WCW as well... but if you wanna itemize it: DDP and his ability to pull Diamond Cutters from anywhere (is that Lift & Cutter move from Smackdown: Here Comes The Pain a DDP move?) Chris Kanyon, both as the "Innovator of Offense" and definitely "Positively Kanyon"... you know, the DDP/Kanyon match reminded me too much of DDP/Undertaker... it was kinda lame, the way Kanyon got his comeuppance...considering how bloody hilarious Kanyon was doing the DDP impersonation. Lance Storm and his "Canadian" belts. the ORIGINAL 3-man nWo Scott Hall's entrance to WCW promo: "...for 'Billionare Ted', for the 'NA-CHO MANNN' (Savage voice), and for anyone else in... uhhh... 'Dubya-See-Dubya', a-huh-huh!" Goldberg's streak Chris Jericho and his hilarious feuds. The thought of Chris Jericho facing Raven is still hilarious to me... The cruiserweight division towards the end of WCW's run Booker T's return to WCW towards the end of WCW's run... ...the list goes on. |

All the things that have already been said are good, but one thing that stands out for me is the 3 hour show every monday. Not just that it was 3 hours, but that they usually hyped the main event very well throughout the show. By the time it came on you were dying to see what was going to happen. These days the WWE can hype a match (Benoit/HBK) for a few weeks and by the time it comes on I'd still rather watch hockey. Then what do I get if I actually watch the match? A shitty ending to set up a rehash of a very tired feud ![]() |
