John Cena Controversy?

(From the front page)

http://www.tpww.net/2012/09/ex-wwe-w...-cena-mcmahon/

Court Bauer, a former member of the WWE Creative team, spoke on the MLW podcast with Konnan and Mister Saint Laurent about believed tension between John Cena and Vince McMahon, specifically related to Cena’s surgery. Check out the highlights:

On how it began: “John Cena has this procedure done in Birmingham, AL. WWE.com puts out there that he’ll be down for only two weeks and that life will go on. It was basically like removal of fragments and bone spurs in his arm or his elbow, which if you follow sports, baseball players have it done all the time, usually in the office season. NFL guys will have it done here or there. It’s a pretty easy deal. So, I don’t think anyone was thinking it was going to be this long stretched out thing, but then the reports came out about how long John Cena was going to be down for. John Cena then took to Twitter saying that WWE.com got the story wrong and that he’s going to be out for a full six [weeks] and he just buried WWE.com and all the guys over there. The story obviously then switched to ‘now he’s out six weeks.’”

On Vince’s reaction: “From what I know, Vince McMahon himself, in the agent meeting, the producers meeting, told everyone straight up the dude is out for just two weeks, ‘we dodged a bullet and that he’s very much in the mix moving forward.’ That was Tuesday, he said that. Then Cena had very different things to say and I understand WWE.com did talk to James Andrews [Cena's doctor], who WWE and Cena did give them the blessing to talk to. That’s standard protocol at WWE. They always try to interview the doctor, get insight so they can have the news. Sometimes it’s a kayfabe site and sometimes it’s a legit news site. Sometimes it’s a TMZ site, but that’s the story. They interviewed him and Dr. James Andrews did say he’d be out just two weeks.”

On the conflict: “So you have to wonder if Vince and the doctor said it and Cena is saying six weeks, there is an interesting issue there. Is it that John Cena wanted the full six weeks out? Was John Cena then told something after Tuesdays that conflicted with this? But it was very quickly thereafter they reported it on the website that this was not in fact the situation. The reality of it is, John Cena is coming off a divorce, he’s beaten up. He’s got a bad neck, a bad hip, bad everything. He’s closing in on 36. The wear and tear of a guy like that, that goes, goes, goes and is a company man, you gotta think about. And if you’re Vince McMahon, you look at the clock, you look at the calendar and you think, is it time to build the next John Cena?”
------------------------------------------

About those last couple of lines, first, I didn't know Cena was 35 years old. So based on that, and all the injuries, is Cena's time really coming to an end? Is it time for WWE to start thinking about life without Cena, or at the very least, life without a full-time John Cena on the roster?

WWE should always have been thinking about life without Cena. You can't just have one guy on top and settle. Anything can happen. Years of lazy character development has turned into a mad scramble to actually finally try. I'm pretty sure Vince sees Ryback as the guy who can be right there and replace Cena as the top guy without missing a beat. But even that won't be enough. They're working on it with Sheamus but for some reason Sheamus isn't a guy who can just be hotshotted to mega-star level. I think the guy's great but he's gonna need a couple more years of just steady, good booking to be considered that guy.

35 isn't that old, look at Flair or even HHH, hes got another 10 years easily. But like WWF Fan said they should be looking to life after Cena regardless.

Ryback is the guy who can replace Cena as the top guy? How could anyone have such a thought? He's entertaining and over, but that's completely absurd. Ryback will never be anything remotely similar to the importance of Cena.

Would you have thought the Ringmaster Steve Austin and Rocky Maivia would be two of the biggest stars of all time?

No telling what guy is gonna blow up. Cena already went from a wigger hanging around with Bull Buchanan to the WWE poster boy, don't see why Ryback cant.

He's entertaining and over... I'm not seeing the issue here...

If "He'll never be anything remotely similar to the importance of Cena" is what you think would prevent him from being the top guy, one could say Cena was never anything remotely similar to the importance of Austin, Rock or Hogan... does that mean he's not a legit top guy?

Wow, fair enough. I (obviously) can not see how Ryback will be the face of the company for half a decade or more, but clearly a lot of people here at TPWW are real high on him.

I have not seen any sort of stand-out promo ability, or even the ability for him to work a main event match, let alone do all the press/media shoots/interviews/grant a wish/everything that Cena does year upon year with minimal time off. Simply put, there is nothing proven in Ryback (he's been around 5 months on television) that would allow me to say he can replace Cena.

If you guys truly believe Ryback can 'replace' Cena, then okay, I'll sit back and find out.

75% of the stuff you hear on this site is BS. Like the NUCLEAR heat on Lesnar.

Anyways, If Vince was more like Dana White he would be blasting John Cena all over his press conferences and calling James Andrews a sport killer.

I think some of you are forgetting that the top guy doesn't HAVE to do the exact same things as Cena. Ryback doesn't have to be the super nice guy company spokesperson who spends time with the children. I don't think Stone Cold or the Undertaker did much of those things and they turned out pretty ok.

Also from what I saw when he was Skip Sheffield, Ryback has a butt load of charisma. He'll be fine.

Basically what I'm trying to say is stop picking on the guy, you big bullies.

Also from what I saw when he was Skip Sheffield, Ryback has a butt load of charisma. He'll be fine.

Basically what I'm trying to say is stop picking on the guy, you big bullies.
Yeah, but it's too soon to make a judgement on whether he is capable of being THE guy. Like I said, he could be, but we have to see more of what he can do on the mic, in the ring, etc.

Simply put, there is nothing proven in Ryback (he's been around 5 months on television) that would allow me to say he can replace Cena.

If you guys truly believe Ryback can 'replace' Cena, then okay, I'll sit back and find out.
Ryback could replace Hogan t his peak so I don't know WHAT you're talking about.

WWE's problem since the time of Hogan was them never really caring about needing a future mega star until their current mega star left or retired. The best time to have really start building up the next mega star was the year Cena had shoulder surgery and came back way too quickly in order to win the Rumble.

Ryback isn't ready to become the new Cena or next mega star. He needs more time to really develop a massive fan base like Goldberg did and probably could by the time of next year's Mania if he were to face off against the Undertaker or a really big star.
