Programs constantly "Not Responding" and then my computer freezes
Once again, I'm a computer retard so don't really know what I'm doing so any help (in simple steps) would be very much appreciated.
So it all started about a week ago. I was downloading some comic torrents from piratebay, and then all of a sudden all the programs started to not respond and my computer froze. I rebooted it and it happened again, so I assumed it would be the torrents. I messed around with my laptop for a bit, and then just deleted the files I'd downloaded and everything was working fine again. Then I tried downloading a film as I've done plenty of times in the past and it started freezing again, so I just completely uninstalled Vuze as well as deleting any files I'd downloaded in the past few days, and once again it was working fine. I was able to then re-install Vuze and download films as normal again. Up until I decided to stupidly try and download one of the comics again, this time from kickasstorrents. The same stuff started happening again, so I did the same thing, deleted everything including Vuze, but this time the problem doesn't seem to be going away. I can usually get about 30 minutes before everything starts crashing. I've tried running scans but it always freezes before it's finished. Any help anyone? ![]() |

my only super tech expert suggestion (aka I once had a problem with freezing that everybody thought was probably my HDD being fucked and this is how it got fixed and it's still working now 10 months later) is disabling/unticking the Windows Search process through msconfig and restarting. I used to be able to get maybe 5-10 minutes use out of my comp before pretty much everything would stop responding and that fixed it, no idea why

Try this Igin.
Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and it will bring up the task manager Press Print Screen (Located usually as PrntScrn above your backspace button) Copy it into paint (low memory usage) save it somewhere go to imgur.com upload that pic post picture here It sounds like your comp is getting bogged down by something and if its a program chewing your cpu, then you can easily force close it. Also like CSL said, give that a try as well. |

Is it likely it's just some program then? Or is it more likely it's some kind of virusy thing that's claimed squatters rights in my laptop?

Well as you probably are aware, a cpu can't handle things forever.
Some programs, such as adobe photoshop, use an enormous amount of memory when in use and most midrange computers will bog down with that and even another program or two open. It very well could be a virus, have you run a scan? Spyware scan? I can tell you how to do both if needed. If you were to do what I ask, we could see the programs and what is using the memory. As CSL said, going to msconfig will show what is happening during startup and it could easily be something that you installed accidentally with another program by clicking a box giving permission to do so. I suggest trying uTorrent to see if it makes a difference. Its much smaller and runs easily behind other things. And lastly, torrents will chew your bandwidth (amount of internets you can have sent to you) as well as bog your comp down and if you don't remove it from your sharelist, people will be getting it from you and that slows things down as well. |

I tend to keep things on my laptop to a minimum and usually delete whatever films I've downloaded once I've watched it anyway, but yeah maybe I accidentally installed some little bugger. I've tried scanning but it always crashes before the scan is complete.
Just deleted a bunch of things though and I have it in safe mode at the moment while I get some things done and it seems to be working, when it was crashing even in safe mode the other day, so maybe I deleted whatever the problem was. Dunno, I'll test it in normal mode later on when I don't have to get stuff done and see if the problem persists. If it does I'll try out some of that stuff. Cheers. |

Best of luck with it, there are others here who are far better but I do know some basic fixes for computers.

Still got stuff freezing after anywhere from 10 to 40 minutes in normal mode. Can use Safe Mode fine though. I think I literally need a step by step guide on what to do here lol. Most things on other forums I've found are all so vague and full of technobabble.

I use AVG to scan my computer but I'm gonna download those ones that Hasney recommends in the Windows thread that's stickied in here and see if they can run a full scan without the laptop crashing.

lol and now I can't even get into Safe Mode. Just crashes every time while booting after it gets to the line
windows\system32\DRIVERS\avgidshx.sys So I assume it's something to do with AVG. Tried downloading an AVG remover, but it just opened and then didn't actually remove anything. I can't get into any of my folders now either without Windows crashing. Whole laptop is just falling apart lol. Can only get about 20 minutes of internet access at a time and can't remove AVG or scan anything without everything crashing. Hopeless. |

You can try everyone's fave tool mr. Command Line!
Boot with a windows installer disc (hit R for recovery console for XP, or for vista and later: after the installer loads hit shift+F10 for a console), or a linux livecd/liveusb (unetbootin with mint or ubuntu is easy) to get to your hard disk files, and rename all of the avg*.sys files in your drivers folder to something like avg*.dis instead. Reboot and you should be able to get into windows and uninstall AVG. If you can't uninstall, you may need to first reinstall and then uninstall. If that fails, I would just reinstall windows. Sounds too hard otherwise. |

Right so I managed to uninstall AVG, and I got into safe mode, ran a scan using Spybot and it got rid of some stuff for me, I can now get back into my folders and stuff without it crashing. But I've still got the basic problem of it just crashing every now and then.
Hasney, most of what you said went way over my head ![]() |

So it's been completely fine today. Every time a website takes even the tiniest bit of time to load I'm all "oh goddddd, here we go again guys!".
But nahh touch wood it's gonna be okay. ![]() |

Looks like you need to ditch Vuze and use utorrent?

Tried that. I uninstalled Vuze, used utorrent and it came up with the same problem. I've uninstalled that as well now but it didn't fix anything.

it sounds like it may be stuff from PirateBay that's giving you issues. What do you use for an AntiVirus now? I use Avast and I've never had an issue with torrents...on that same note, I don't download from PirateBay either.
I'd say try Kickass Torrents. |

It's actually fixed now, my friend just wiped the entire system for me and we started from scratch with it, working fine now.
I usually use Kickasstorrents, but just used pirate bay the once for these stand alone comics. I use avast too. I'm just going to wait until the comic series is complete and someone better uploads them all as a bulk pack. |

good stuff man. Whenever I run into an issue I can't seem to fix, I usually reformat and start fresh...as much as it hurts because of all the stuff I usually have downloaded. Been careful and haven't had to do it in quite some time. Thank god
