Gimmicks: A List Of The Most Successful Characters In Wrestling

As defined by Websters, a gimmick is a trick or device intended to attract attention, publicity, or business.

In the world of professional wrestling, gimmicks have been used since it's inception to create a larger than life atmosphere and to build wrestlers from normal human beings into money making machines.

A good gimmick can drive a company to success and a bad gimmick will typically not only end up on a blooper reel but in a lot of instances create a stigma around that superstar and from there on will find it hard to create a successful career outside of that gimmick. I call this the "childhood actor" conundrum. While the use of gimmicks in today's wrestling atmosphere isn't as outlandish as it was in previous generations (i.e. The Goon/Duke The Dumpster/ Puke), gimmicks are still used today to help get positive and negative reactions from the crowd. Be it a dancer, a dentist, a sumo or something as simple as an intellectual giant, gimmicks take normal men and turn them in to superstars.

This thread is dedicated not to the unsuccessful but to the gimmicks that stand the test of time. The kind of gimmick that can be recycled throughout the generations and still pop the audience like it was the first time ever used.

To get the ball rolling, I submit the following:

Gimmick - I Am Beautiful!

Calling out to the heavens that I am more beautiful than anyone in this arena is easily one of the most popular and time tested gimmicks ever used. Some come to the ring spritzing the audience with perfume, others roll their hips in a sexual way while some even place paper bags over the faces of the crowd as to not "ugly the room" in his presence. The "I Am Beautiful" gimmick is timeless and almost always effective. Here are a few more examples:

1. Adorable Adrian Adonis - One of the first men to use this gimmick. He spent his entire career adoring his face with make up and staring at himself in awe before each match. The crowd hated him for this and he proves that even larger and unattractive men can successfully control this gimmick.

2. Rick "The Model" Martel - Rick would spray the audience (and sometimes his opponent) in the face with his perfume. He would strut into the ring with such an arrogance that he spent most of his career being booed for nothing more than insisting he was beautiful.

3. Rick Rude - Rude took this gimmick to a different level. Not only did he come out and seductively sway his hips and pucker his lips but he would get on the microphone and insist that all the ladies in the audience would leave their boyfriends and husbands for him in the drop of a hat. Instant heat that created a stigma around him that followed his entire in ring career.

4. Dashing Cody Rhodes - While short lived, Cody took this gimmick into the next generation by creating "self help" videos on how to make the audience less ugly and more DASHING! Then he took it to the next level by having men place paper bags over the faces of the audience. A true genius step. And while the gimmick didn't last long he was easily one of the highlights during this time. After he dropped the Dashing gimmick he created a new gimmick playing off of this one by trying to hide his face because he wasn't beautiful anymore. Equally as effective while it lasted and he was great at playing that part.

Ok TPWW you're up to bat. My hope is to compile a list of the best and most timeless gimmicks used throughout the history of professional wrestling.

Goldust (The original late 1995-early 1996 version): He sent Razor Ramon flowers, sent some dude towards ringside so he could show Razor a poster of Goldust's head shopped onto Razor's body, opened up his wrestling shirt to reveal a drawn-on heart on his chest with "Razor" written in it. It was like he was chasing Razor, but in reality he was chasing the IC Title. It was brilliant.

Censor Parody Gimmick

Steven Richards, leader of Right To Censor. Timeless, always going to be some parental group jumping down WWE's ass about something, this could be recycled through generations.

Right To Censor really could have benefited by having someone a little higher up on the pay scale but the gimmick itself came at the exact right time and I could see it being reused.

"I'm not from here! I have my own customs! Look at my craaaaaazy passport!"
— The Foreigner, Futurama, "Raging Bender"

The Foreign Wrestling Heel is one of the major stock characters of Professional Wrestling. He's from another country, and loves his own country and hates America. Usually, the reason for this is because Americans (and American wrestling fans specifically) lack something that his country has in spades (or so he believes). For example, Brits and Frenchmen may look down on Americans because they lack class and sophistication; Japanese, because Americans lack honor; and Canadians, because Americans lack respect for wrestling tradition. These are the most common varieties of Foreign Wrestling Heel, but far from the only ones; one particular instance, Ludvig Borga, was an evil Finn who hated Americans because Americans lacked respect for the environment.
A Foreign Wrestling Heel will often feud with an All American Face; the typical climactic match to this feud is a Flag Match, where the flags of the two nations of the participants are placed upon opposite turnbuckles, and the winner is the first man to recover his own flag and wave it. Clashes with the Foreign Wrestling Heel generally cause International Showdowns by Proxy like this, as he is usually the villain in those situations.
During the Cold War, many (perhaps most) Foreign Wrestling Heels were Soviets, and spoke proudly of Communism and Glorious Mother Russia. It was difficult to find a wrestling promotion that didn't have an Evil Russian or three kicking around. Perhaps the best known of these was Nikita Koloff, and he also became the biggest subversion of the trope; when his arch-nemesis, Magnum T. A., suffered a career-ending injury in a car accident, Nikita decided Magnum was a Worthy Opponent, gained a new found respect for him, and all Americans by extension, and dedicated the remainder of his wrestling career to his fallen foe; he thus became the first Russian face... well, ever, and did it without renouncing Communism or Russia.
Note that it is possible to be foreign and not a Foreign Wrestling Heel; however, the instant one shows any pride in being from a country that is not the US, he starts down the path to becoming one. Canada's Bret Hart, for example, wrestled most of his career as a face with his Canadian-ness being treated as an afterthought (unlike, say, the obviously Canadian heel The Mountie), until his 1997 heel turn, when he became proudly Canadian and launched a feud with all American fans and wrestlers. This led to him being a hated heel in in the States, but unsurprisingly led to his becoming loved even more by Canadian fans. Also, it's not necessary for the Foreign Wrestling Heel to be an actual foreigner. Simply looking foreign or having foreign ancestry is often enough for a wrestler to be given an Foreign Wrestling Heel gimmick (don't think too hard about this when it comes to American wrestling).
Lest the gentle reader think this is solely a gimmick for culturally insensitive Americans, consider the team of Art Barr, Eddie Guerrero, and Louie "Madonna's Boyfriend" Spiccoli, who wrestled as Los Gringos Locos in Mexican federation AAA, and were Evil American Foreigners. Likewise with most Japanese media having Foreign Wrestling Heels. Also, no jokes about any news outlets.
If a Foreign Wrestling Heel is particularly hated by the crowd, look for them to piss him off with a chant of "USA! USA! USA!" Even if his opponents that evening aren't Americans. A Foreign Wrestling Heel may end up popular in the nation he hails from if his only negative trait is to praise said location.

Very valid point. You have Mabel/Viscera, Brodus Clay, Big Dick Johnson, Rickishi, and Dude Love come to mind.

The goth/dark side characters from UT, the Brood, sinister minister, Kevin Thorn, and Raven. It's been big for about the last 20 years but is starting to fade now I would posit.

This character was awesome. It ended kind of abruptly, and I'm sure WWE didn't get all it could've out of it.

Also, the 2010 Royal Rumble match in-ring promo was one of wrestling's greatest moments. At least it should be:

As an inversion of the "wrestler moonlighting in an outside occupation" gimmick, the "team sports player moonlighting as a pro wrestler" gimmick seems to have been favored by bookers in the 1990s (Steve "Mongo" McMichael, Lawrence Taylor, Kevin Green, Dennis Rodman, Karl Malone, Adam "Pacman" Jones).
