Mushi-Shi
I understand that I'm like 6 years late on this but Netflix gives me the opportunity to see a ton of shows that I missed when they were in their prime. I'll preface all of this by saying that I'm not an "anime guy" but this show is truly incredible. It's eerie, thought provoking, and beautiful all in the same stroke of the brush. The problem I have with anime many times is that I feel action is very important to the creators and they try to jam way too much of it into episodes when only a small amount is necessary to get the point across. Mushi-Shi is a very quiet, philosophical, and understated work of art, especially for an anime. There's rarely much action but I am glued to the screen every time I watch it. Wish I was in college so I could do a master thesis on it or something. Really am in love with this show and it might open the flood gates for me to give anime more of a chance in the future. Is anybody a fan of this show?

What you described about the action packed aspect, isn't really true of anime as a whole but more what's been marketed to us audiences, because of the "cartoons are for kids" stigma that's prevailant in the country.

It's gotten better over the years and more thought provoking stuff has reached our shores. I'm by no means an authority on anime, but I'll check this show out and see if I can make any reccomendations.

You would really like stuff by Satoshi Kon.

Perfect Blue
Paranoia Agent
Paprika
Tokyo Godfathers

I usually lean towards the action stuff, but Kon's work is so damned good. Tragic that he passed away.

Hate the voice acting for the main character. Doesn't really fit the "look" of the character.

Dubs are typically not great tho.

Show hasn't hooked me yet, but I see what you mean about the atmosphere and stuff. There is a lot of stuff like this out there, though I'm not knowledgable enough to make more suggestions than the Kon stuff. We have an anime thread. Browse through that.

I shouldn't have generalized as I know very little about the medium as a whole, just something I noticed in the little experience I have with anime. I'm open to give pretty much anything a try. I see what you're saying about the main character but you get used to his voice as the show goes on. Yeah. I'm definitely hooked. Really appreciate the tone of the show as a whole and the "atmosphere" overall. Props for watching a few episodes to point me in the right direction with other suggestions. Love.
