Dogville (#99 of all time on IMDb)
This movie is crazy. One of the most original movies I've ever seen. The entire thing is set on a sound stage with chalk outlines telling us where each building is. Instead of explaining it, here are screenshots:
PLOT: A woman (Nicole Kidman) comes to a small US town called Dogville, running from some gangsters that are after her. She is eventually befriended in the town and helps people out with things in exchange for allowing her to stay. However, police keep coming to search for her and so do the gangsters, and people begin to grow suspicious of her "secret". Soon, they all begin to turn on her, slowly but surely and her stay in Dogville goes from pleasant to hell. The movie is basically saying that humans are all evil assholes by nature and are out for their own good, and will step over others to better themselves. Some people have bashed it, saying that it's an anti-American movie and Dogville is supposed to represent the US. It could be, since the director/writer has been known to be pretty hateful towards America, apparently, but that's not really what I took from it. It's a great movie, IMO. It is a little slow at times, and is three hours long, so you will need some patience to watch it, but it's worth it in the end, IMO. It's on Kazaa or IRC if you want to download it. Or it should be out on DVD some time in August. Plus, it's ranked as the #99 greatest film of all time on IMDb. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0276919/ |
