Did WWE deliberately set out to tarnish Sting?

i was always looking at this being the "closure" on the monday night war - yes its been years since wcw folded and that shitty invasion angle, but it sort of seemed like this was due to be the definitive end.

im hoping that the angle isn't actually over though.

side note - fuck vince for that whole "we took a man from obscurity and gave him his wrestlemania moment" line. if by obscurity you mean people watching more events featuring him than wwe programming on the network you own then yes, you did, and you really should lay off the mushrooms before you turn into jim herd

There are so many things wrong with Triple H pinning Sting at Mania, I don't even know where to begin. Start with the fact that it just makes Sting look like a total bitch. All of this work to bring him in and they job him out during his first match - I don't care if he took a sledgehammer shot or if it wasn't a fair match or if God himself held Sting's shoulders to the mat. That match should have ended one way - Sting with his hand raised, Triple H crawling to the back and letting Sting have his moment.

Triple H won because he had another segment to do after his match. And he gets more heat going out to the ring with Steph after beating Sting than he would have gotten after getting beaten by Sting. He needed that heat because his segment was with Rock and Ronda, which was probably being treated as the most important segment of the entire show.

Do we realize that Triple H is the one who gets to beat everyone? It's been this way since 2003.

Nobody in WCW could beat Goldberg without a fucking stun gun. Even when he came to the WWE and his streak was less important, Goldberg beats Rock, Jericho, Christian, Kane... who got to beat him? Triple H. More than once.

CM Punk becomes the hottest property in the industry since the Attitude Era - almost overnight. He beats John Cena (twice) for the WWE Championship - one of them relatively clean. Who does he lose to? Triple H. For no reason.

Brock Lesnar comes back to WWE and brutally mangles John Cena on RAW and at Extreme Rules. He turned Cena inside out a year later in their infamous Summerslam match. He beats CM Punk - arguably the biggest face in the company - at SummerSlam the year before that. He runs through guys like Big Show and Mark Henry like they're soft butter. He ends the Undertaker's WrestleMania streak. But who has a WrestleMania victory over the baddest man to ever grace a WWE ring in the Beast Incarnate? Triple H.

I need not mention Triple H's "programs" with a young Randy Orton, Rob Van Dam, Booker T, Kane, Chris Jericho... the list goes on.

And now, Triple H gets to beat Sting in his first match in a WWE ring, at WrestleMania no less.

When is enough enough?

There's GOT to be more to all of this than just Sting coming out, getting his match at Mania and LOSING to Triple H.


If that's ALL Sting ever does as an in-ring performer in the WWE, then it doesn't make a whole lot of sense...unless the company really DID want to just bury him.

They should get Lex Luger to rape Vince and Triple H in the ring. It would be pay back for Vince insulting Luger too on Raw.

At first it was a WTF? choice. We couldn't have Sting vs. Taker because neither man could afford to lose the match, so we got Sting/HHH...but Sting lost anyway.

Then I got to thinking; it was pretty smart booking.

Next year they're looking at getting 100,000 people at Mania, they're looking to stack the card. They've set up something with Rock/HHH, one of the hottest feuds (albeit from over a decade ago) that never went to Mania one-on-one. Personally, I've no interest in that match, but if that's what they're going with they needed to put some shine on HHH.

I wasn't a fan of the tacked-on WWE vs. WCW stuff, especially if you have Sting contradict it in his promo. But the DX/nWo stuff popped the crowd.

Now, Sting came in for his one chance at a Mania moment, and he had it stolen from him. This gives him reason to come back next year; another shot at a Mania win, a chance to prove himself, and who better to prove himself against than the guy with the best Mania record of all time? The Undertaker.

You put both guys in to the Hall of Fame the night before, do the presentation of the other inductees then segue straight into entrances for Sting and Taker; First Time, Last Time. Hall of Famer vs. Hall of Famer. Give the fans the match they wanted on the show that you need to sell tickets for.

HHH vs. Rock. (Or HHH/Steph vs. Rock/Ronda)
Taker vs. Sting
Austin vs. Cena

I don't think WWE tried to tarnish Sting deliberately...but I'll just borrow from what I posted in another thread:

Instead what looked like it'd be a long-term story that might have ended in a power struggle type deal with a SummerSlam rematch just seemed to get scrapped in favor of yet another Vince McMahon "remember, I killed WCW" ego stroke.

Well DDP was there at WM so could have happened.


My preference would have been first DX come out, then NWO just Hall and Nash, then HBK attacks Sting and him and Triple H about to double team Sting and then voodoo child hits and Hogan comes out and takes them both out.


Another alternative would have been to have Ric Flair come out seemingly to help Triple H only for him to low blow the game.


I actually think having Flair involved would have been highly appropriate given his closeness to Triple H and his long time rivalry with Sting making the low blow against Triple H even more significant.
