transfer the contents of my old computer onto my new one?

I was told that you can use a cable which goes into the printer ports, and then use a file transfer program.

Well, I tried this and the two computers never connected. It just stayed on the 'the two computers are trying to connect. this may take a minute' for about 45 minutes.

Any ideas on any other ways?
