Your first memory of Pro Wrestling

So, for this week's podcast, we're looking to discuss different people's first memories of pro wrestling, and would like to get some feedback to hear yours.

The question being not only what your first ever memory of exposure to wrestling, but what was your first impression, how did you feel about it at the time, how did it influence you as a fan, and in hindsight, how do you feel about that same first moment?

As always, the best contributions will be read on the air and we'll be crediting you accordingly. So what was it for you?

EDIT - Our show talking all about First Memories of Pro Wrestling, featuring many of your contributions, is now online and available to listen to at the following link: http://squaredcirclegazette.podbean...._Wrestling.mp3

Vader, remember seeing Vader when I was a kid and being amazed. Don't remember who he wrestled just knew that the big guy in the mask was cool.

I recall the night I went over to a friend's apartment whom I'd known from high school, it was the night of Survivor Series 2001, which he and some other friends were with him watching. I remember I think Jeff Hardy being on top of the cage and then he just did an insane Swanton Bomb or high dive off the top of the cage through a table. I can't remember who he took out with it but I remember being pretty amazed by it. Ths began my now nearly 15-year long love affair with the WWE.

WCW Saturday Night on this obscure Polish channel. Commentary by two drunk guys who most likely had no idea about wrestling, so they just made shit up. They would make up names for wrestlers, name for moves, etc. I remember Johnny B. Badd was fighting someone and they refered to him as Johnny Tutti Frutti. Also remember Roadblock was on the card as well and I thought that's the most hilarious shit ever.

I remember Hulk Hogan and Yokozuna at Wrestlemania IX.... vaguely....

and then I specifically recall going to a friend's house to play basketball and we were on the driveway and he's like "OH MAN ... Stone Cold won after he broke his neck! It was crazy!" and I was like "Stone who? what?" and had no idea what he was talking about... and slowly but surely wrestling began to creep into my childhood.

I have two.

The actual first memory is getting this sticker album for free with some newspaper tokens back in 1993. My parents would give me pocket money to go to the local shop and buy stickers, even though initially I'd never watched wrestling.

Then my first actual memory of wrestling itself, was watching the Raw when 1-2-3 Kidd beat Razor Ramon. I remember this because I was only five or six at the time, I didn't really know what was going on, and my Dad said "he's gonna fight the kid". At the time he said this, the camera was panned on a young child in the audience, and I thought my Dad meant Ramon was literally going to fight a kid.

And here I am. 23 years later.

The only sticker album I ever completed

I was first introduced to wrestling after getting a Macho King Hasbro figure when I was about 4 from my nan, who was a fan of wrestling. After that I got a Hogan figure and was watching it when I could, was absolutely hooked, this was probably around 1989. Been a fan ever since, 27 years later.

I remember the first time someone told me it was 'fake', it was my sister when I was 8. We were watching either Raw or Superstars and it was when Doink attacked Crush with his arm cast before Wrestlemania 9. She kept pausing it to show me he wasn't really hitting him and kept calling it faked. Wound me right up

My first memory was at age 5 watching Sunday Morning WWF Superstars 1987 seeing Kamala giving some poor jobber a top rope splash right before I had to go to church. I was immediately hooked. I told my parents what I just watched and they explained to me that what I watched wasn't real, in what I'm guessing was a failed attempt to prevent me from trying my new wrestling moves at school.

My uncle rented Summerslam 1996 (I would have just turned 7) after it aired on PPV and I vividly remember being super pissed when the feed kept "accidentally" being cut out and being super freaked out by all 3 (Undertaker, Mankind & Paul Bearer)....

Vaguest earliest memory of wrestling was the feud between the Megabucks and the Mega Powers at SummerSlam 88. Rented alot of tapes from a local store so not really sure what I watched live or on tape from the early days. My dad was into wrestling and to this very day he says "I wish I never showed you wrestling."

Nothing specific but do have very early memories of watching WWF Superstars at my grandparents house when I was 4 or 5 years ago.

The Mega Powers breaking up might be the earliest or one of the earliest feud memories I have as a kid.

The Friday Night Show where Macho Man completed his turn against Hogan when they were The Mega Powers. They were fighting the Twin Towers, Boss Man and Akeem that night and I remember one of them knocking Elizabeth off the apron, Hogan taking her to the back, and legitimately being worried for her safety because I was 7 - My mom ended up turning off the TV because I was actually angry about what was happening LOL

The first time I really became aware of wrestling is when I got a inflatable Goldberg toy for my birthday or Christmas or something. I didn't know who the guy was, but he protected my from Evil Santas and the like.

I had heard a bit of scuttlebutt about wrestlers in the playground at school. The Undertaker, Stone Cold Steve Austin and even Rikishi came up. I think people forget how over that guy used to be. I also remember reading an old Wizard magazine that had a "Who Would Win?" section dedicated to a hypothetical match between Kane and Mr. Ass. Unfortunately for Karl, they put Kane over, and they didn't fight to mutual oblivion.

But my first memory actually watching was a SmackDown segment from the Thanksgiving edition in 2000. William Regal was the European Champion and cut a promo to ripping into America, which I thought was hilarious. This contains the hilarious line "What the hell is a Rugrat?" which gets met by "Asshole!" chants. The Rock interrupted and besmirched Mr. Regal's words, eventually telling him that the fans would love it if The Rock went into the ring and proceeded to "whallop your candy bum all over Ft. Lauderdale." I was honestly not a big fan of The Rock when I eventually became a fan, much preferring Austin, but the friend that was introducing me to wrestling loved this. What I really remember about this promo were Regal's facial expressions. My friend and I still laugh at them now. To this day, Regal is still one of my favorite professional wrestlers ever.

Here's the video if you want to refresh your memories of this:

Going to cheat and say I have 2.

Wrestlemania 5 on tape while I was either 2 or 3 years old. I remember the main event of Savage vs Hogan. It was particularly the blood... for whatever reason the beating Savage was putting on Hogan seemed very dramatic. Hogan honestly seemed on the verge of death and Savage pummelled his bleeding body. I suppose it was a good thing I had never seen any Hogan match before, because well... I supposed I probably would have seen that finish coming.

The more clear memory I have was Davey vs Bret at Wembley on Scrambled television (ie. We only got the audio and could only see the scrambled image of the two on t.v.... oh the days of basic cable). I guess you have to give credit to Vince and I believe it was Brain as well as the story being told in the ring, because even only hearing the commentary it was dramatic. I was 5-years-old and I was into Bret because he was Canadian (and also awesome) and I cried when he lost. I specifically remember Bret being on offence for most of the match and thinking he seemed the superior wrestler for that reason, and was upset that it sounded like he got caught in a pin. Funnily enough, that's exactly what Bret was going for.

I was at the convenience store looking at comics, and this immediately caught my eye. Didn't actually watch any wrestling for a couple months as we only had one tv, but I was hooked on the magazines. Watched summerslam that year, and that was it. Lifelong fan.

You'd probably be a Manowar fan if you wandered into the music aisle, if this caught your eye.

Also, my mom told me that she went to a wrestling event and saw andre while she was pregnant with me, but I dunno if that counts.

I also remember watching WCW Saturday Night (replay) on Sunday morning because they got the FOX station it aired on and we didn't, yet we only lived like 20 minutes apart....

Used to watch WWF Superstars on Saturday mornings and I think they had a show on Sunday too... and WCW Main Event on Sunday nights on TBS and stuff with my "great uncle" all the time in the late 80s / early 90s...

But the first actual thing that comes to mind is watching Royal Rumble 1991 on VHS cause me and my friend loved the Ultimate Warrior and he got freaking screwed out of the title against Sgt. Slaughter and I remember feeling upset...

My first-first memories are when I was probably about 8 or 9. I was at a neighborhood friend's house and he was watching it with my older brother and his Dad. I was the worst. "This is stupid! It's all fake!" Etc, etc.

My first real experience was in 1997, watching World War 3 with my two best friends, both of whom were huge WCW fanatics. I was still ambivalent about the whole thing.

Then it happened... Rey Mysterio versus Eddie Guerrero for the Cruiserweight Championship. You all know the match (if you don't, go watch it - NOW!). After that, I was hooked, and all I wanted to do with my life was BE Rey Mysterio.

My first memory was Andre and Hulk. Andre was dominating Hulk in the ring and my parents and I were watching on TV. My parents (who are in no way, wrestling fans), were saying stuff like, "oh wow, I don't think the blond guy stands much of a chance." I don't remember watching the conclusion of Hulk/Andre. Parents probably changed the channel or switched the TV off for dinner.

This took place some time during the late 80's. I can't remember the exact date.
