Why is Mick Foley a focal point of Raw in 2016?

Seriously, does anyone actually want to see this guy anymore. I cringe everytime I gotta see him on tv cutting one of his stupid passionate promos that absolutely no one in the audience cares about. Even if they gave him something meaningful to work with instead of this nonsense with Stephanie McMahon, it's not 1998 anymore.

And they wonder why the ratings are where they are.

The only way I'd look forward to Mick Foley on my tv screen is if they brought in his daughter Noelle and they finally booked that incest storyline that Vince has been craving to do for years now.

Get Foley the fuck out of there. He helps no one. I can't stand his fucking novels he writes on facebook anytime Becky Lynch does anything. It's weird, it's not helpful. Maybe have Trish or her fucking idol Lita write something nice about her, not Mick Foley.

Stand in the face of adversity!

I don't mind him, but I get what you mean about him being a focal point on the show. I mean, we all were hopeful we'd get no more 20-minute authority promos opening Raw every week, now we get 20-minute Foley/Steph promos every week instead.

Yeah was pretty odd to pair those two together. Only reason I can think of is the WWE finally realized people were sick and tired of evil authority figures for RAW. Foley having more segments on his own might be a sign they are finally moving away from that.

At least with Bryan and Shane, it feels like two guys who genuinely are having fun and like working with each other.

I get what you're saying....I think. If it's about Foley, he's fine. Fairly neutral to him at this point especially in this role.

If you're talking about the GM/Commissioner role in general, then yah I hate it too. Authority figure is played out at this point and should really only be used in longer in ring segments sparsely. They're featured prominently in every show which isn't good. Both shows even have separate entrances for both figures while telling us "it's about the talent." Yet another way WWE talks out of both sides of their mouth and has problems holding an audience for an entire show and being able to call any talent a true draw.

I'm most probably wrong, but I think the last time Raw opened with a match was the 11th of July episode, when the show opened with a Battle Royal.

I like Foley on RAW, and like the dynamic he has now with "defending Stephanie McMahon" and the whole "girl with the shy smile" thing was great, I think. Feel like it will be very "emotional" and "hearbreaking" when Stephanie inevitably betrays his trust.

Something like that anyway.

Why? You can see it coming from a mile away. Stephanie betrays everyone and Foley is always betrayed.

I think an issue is that Foley lost his edge and can't be his creative self. I don't see much raw emotion out of him and that is what made him famous. Back in his first commish role he was awesome, maybe that is because he could speak more freely or maybe because he worked on air with better talent or a combination of both. I find most promos nowadays more predictable than they were in the past and it is pretty obvious Foley is reading from the script.

As for Steph, she can be a great heel if need be, but I think her role has ran it's course. I don't think she will ever be able to be a face no matter what happens. She will always win any feud, nobody can fight her, there is just no use for her. She can't really put talent over because the guys can't get physcial with her and get their one up. I think it is time for her to just go away.

Mick is awesome. He is way better at what he is doing over the other 3 authority figures.

Why are there 4 authority figures? Why not just 2, and they show up to set up blow off matches and that's it. The matches should build up like "Person A has something person B wants," or "person C is trying to prove himself to person D" or "Person E did something F. And person F is looking for revenge." We don't really need authority figures for that.

Because there aren't any stars on raw and Foley comes from an era when they were pulling 8's and not 2's

Casual fans have all but disappeared, maybe a familiar face will bring a few back?

That face is not Mick Foley. He makes me cringe everytime I see him on tv. And I loved his run in the attitude era and am obviously more than a casual fan. I've fallen off the last few years because of the product being the way it is and Foley does not help any.

I'm the same...good matches aren't enough for me. But I am suggesting that that could be their thought process. They have always lauded the attitude era as the golden period, so people like HHH and Foley are seen as stars from a golden period.

I'd like to see a promo on RAW between Seth and Foley where Mick really puts Seth over as a man that everyone knew was special from the moment he won the NXT Title, to kicking down the door as part of The Shield and putting down legends like The Rock and The Undertaker, but to warn him against the hazards of going against Triple H. After going to war with The Game, he was never the same again, but last week Seth Rollins showed Foley something. He showed that he's got the brains to work out ways to get what he wants. Foley can't take him out of the Clash of Champions match because there is no other contender. Foley should feel disrespected, but he's...impressed. He feels outsmarted because Seth Rollins might just be the man smart enough to take down Triple H. The Game betrayed Rollins at Clash of Champions to bring the best out in Seth Rollins, but I don't think Triple H knows how good Rollins is.

Then Foley can let the inmates run the asylum, because he's Mick Foley, and Rollins can outshine Owens at Clash of Champions at every point, win the Universal Title and call out Triple H.

I'm realizing now that good wrestling isn't what draws me to wrestling. Well, it depends on how you define "good." Movez aren't doing it for me. There was a younger me that would mark out for a Fisherman Buster from the second rope, but the current me sees it and just thinks "Why the fuck wasn't that the finish?"

Everything seems smoother -- not in a fluidity sort of way, but in a choreographed "soft" sort of way. I think the reason Zayn and Nakamura got so many people excited was because they called it in the ring, and a match like that could have very easily happened during yesteryear.

I've been going back and watching some things I missed from wrestling past. I watched Shawn Michaels vs. Mankind from Mind Games 1996 this week. Holy fuck was that match more dramatic, even without it having a modern context, than anything I've seen outside the Cruiserweight Classic recently. They "worked." Michaels sold the character of Mick Foley, and Mankind was on. I look for unique and organic spots when I am watching wrestling these days, and Mankind and Michaels delivered them in spades here. The spots with the mat, Michaels' nervous desperation despite being babyface, Mankind selling the leg despite being heel, HBK's response to the Mandible Claw, Foley getting caught up by the neck in the ropes (!), the back superplex counter through the table, the use of the casket, the Sweet Chin Music using the steel chairs -- I can remember that match based on the drama of the memories it has instilled in me.

Now I just know the big spots of the wrestlers and know that they're going to get a two count and they're going to sell it like they thought the move that has never won them anything would have surely gotten it done here.

Long story short: The reason Mick Foley is still a focal point of RAW is because he is psychically more over than anyone on the active roster.

Everybody remembers him being the Commish as being awesome. So, maybe they want to bring in some fans who might remember that.

Also, where the fuck are the real feuds? I don't mean soft disagreements because people have a PPV match coming up and they gently talk to each other and attack each other from behind, etc. I mean genuine feuds. Cesaro's got a good little rivalry going on with Sheamus, but when was his last feud? I don't even know if you could qualify his break-up with Jack Swagger as one, because they didn't even build to a one-on-one match.

Sami Zayn in NXT is all I can think of.

I suppose you could say that Darren Young had a feud with Titus O'Neil and has one going on now, but apart from that, who has he really feuded with? No wonder I don't give a flying fuck about him.

Sami Zayn has had a feud with Cesaro, Adrian Neville, Kevin Owens (all of those just in NXT), Kevin Owens (counting this separately as a main roster feud) and is now moving onto Chris Jericho. Is it a mystery that more people seem to be fairly into him?

Hard to build a feud when there's a ppv that's supposed to be the culmination of things what seems like every other week.
