Conroy says no to Calgary, Joins LA Kings

http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?id=90261

Craig Conroy is leaving the Calgary Flames for Los Angeles, signing with the Kings as a free agent on Tuesday.

Conroy, an unrestricted free agent, signed a four-year, $12.6-million US deal with the Los Angeles Kings.

Said Conroy from his off-season home in Henderson Harbor, New York: "I'm extremely excited to be an L.A. King. I feel the Kings are committed to winning and I am excited about the direction they are heading. I know that they have a great fan-base at STAPLES Center that has always been tough on opposing teams so it will be nice to have them supporting me for a change."

Conroy will earn $3.15 million a season under his new deal, a raise over the $2.2 million he made last season.

"Craig has proven to be one of the top two-way centers in the game and we are real excited to bring him to the Kings," said Taylor. "He has real strong character, solid leadership skills and he has proven to be a clutch playoff performer. Our fans will appreciate the enthusiasm, passion and high compete-level that he brings to the ice every night."

Conroy missed 19 games this past season with a knee injury and scored 47 points in 63 games. However, he bounced back with a strong playoff, scoring 17 points in 26 games as the Flames reached the Stanley Cup Final.

The 32 year-old native of Potsdam, New York has elevated his game since arriving in Calgary in March of 2001. Conroy has spent much of his time centering a line with Jarome Iginla, giving the former checking centre a more pronouced offensive role; one that helped him score 188 points in 247 games over three-plus seasons with Calgary.

Conroy's status in the game has increased to the point that he was named to the U.S. World Cup team that will compete later this summer.
