Should The WWE Bring Back The King Of The Ring?
![]() ![]() ***** I think they should. Consider that Bret (Even Though He didn't need it),Austin,HHH,Angle, and Lesnar all got more over because of the exposure the King Of The Ring brought. Billy Gunn may have won it, but we all know how hard they have tried to get Gunn over so.... meh. Edge won it in 2001 and it helped him in his singles career for a little while. Same goes for Ken Shamrock. And we will just forget about 1995 (Mable Won It). Anyway, if done right and with the right guy. The King Of The Ring can help push that "he's the future" wrestler into an impact player much quicker. So, what are you views/opinions? Should they bring back the King Of The Ring? Yes or No? |

The thing is, there isn't really anything special about the KOTR. It is just a bunch of midcarders in normal matches trying to become King of the Midcarders. It has worked for some guys (Austin, Angle, etc.), but for many others it did next to nothing (Gunn, Mabel, etc.).
I think the main reason that they nixed it was because of the brand split. It wouldn't have the same effect anymore if it was done between both shows, and what would the winner get anyways? Maybe if they gave the winner a shot at the IC/US title or something, then it would be a bit more interesting. But I see no need to bring it back otherwise. |

mayo, sometimes the winner have been given title shots at summerslam, that's what brock lesnar got when he won, and he ended up getting the title at summerslam, so it is a good idea, i say bring it back, i'd like to see maybe Randy orton, shelton benjamin, and other good new blood winning the tournament (especially Randy orton)

I only fear is if they bring it back next year, they will blow their load and make the finals Cena v. Orton. They so need to save that because that has the possibility to be Rock/Austin at WrestleMania XV.
And LC, i am starting to like Randy Orton. He is getting better every week. |

I dont think it should come back as a PPV, but do it on TV on both RAW and SD, winners of the two tourny face each other at Summerslam. Winner gets bragging trights for their brand and also a guaranteed Heavyweight Title shot at some point in the future (ie next PPV).

Wow...I guess I am the only guy saying no around these parts...
My answer for why it should not be brought back is simply this. Before, when there was a King of the Ring, it could prove a stepping stone for young, just about to peak, superstars. Choosing a winner typically wasn't very hard. Take the guy who is going to be the next big thing (no pun intended)...but look at what we have now. With two shows, SmackDown and RAW, they both have guys who are 2 seconds or less away from being HUGE...Look at John Cena...look at Randy Orton...both are just about to cross the finish line, but what happens when Orton beat Cena at the KotR? Suddenly SmackDown no longer has a guy with huge momentume. Now there could be some argument, "Nick, Rock lost in the finals of 98, and Mick in the finals of 97...and they both pushed through it" yes that is true, but that was because Mick and Rock both went back to some good storylines and had more chances to square off aginst Hunter and Shamrock respectivly...if Cena loses to Orton, that's it. Sorry Cena you just couldn't cut it, but have fun on that other show. Now if we had something the likes of each brand having their OWN KotR tournament (no need to call them both King of the Ring...just a tournament will do in say the month of June since there is a PPV for each brand) and the winners of each of the respective brands tournament won a shot at SummerSlam for their title...then go for it. I would like to see it. But to through a bunch of interpromotional matches in there just dosn't make logical sense if they really are trying to create the illusion of two different companies. |

This is another one of those big reasons why the brand split must end. Fire some shitty guys, bring all the top notch stuff together, and get survivor series and king of the ring back into business.
Having King of the Ring on non-paperviews is a gay ass idea, i would feel like i was being tricked. It would be Vince Mcmahon taking a huge piss on my face and saying : "The brand split will never end, and to enforce it, im going to add soemthing to every brand that will make it nearly impossible to bring them back together again!" Man I hate people. |

The King of the Ring should be somebody who is on the verge of being the number 1 guy in the company. The fact that they tried it out in 2002 and sucked just goes to show how the concept of this with the split rosters just can't work. In all fairness, what has the KOTR done for Edge?? Yeah he got pushed to IC title level by Summerslam, but he's still in that same position right now. In 2004, beating a bunch of crappy midcarders on PPV ain't gonna elevate a wrestler even more - giving them TV time and building up their characters will.

No. It can't work with 2 rosters. Unless they were planning on giving KotR to one brand exclusively (preferrably Smackdown, since they are hurting for good PPVs right now), and then saving another kind of exclusive specialty match for Raw (War Games, maybe?).

Yeah, although I'm not sure whether it should be seperate brands or inter-promotional
![]() I bought KOTR 93 & 94 the other day, and it was such a good concept at the time. I think the meaning of actually being 'King of the Ring' back then was like WHOA, but by the time Edge won it, it was kinda just "meh". I was still taken aback abit when Lawler attacked Bret after he won ![]() |

I was thinking along the same lines as Funky Fly. Just give KotR to Smackdown!. They need that extra umph anyway, right? A little something to help get them over the "lesser show" stigma? Give 'em a well promoted tournament. Make it seem like THE shit. Have Vince himself come out and announce its establishment. It might give Smackdown! a little leverage, y'know? Just sayin'. Wacky antics could ensue.

I wouldn't do KOTR per say but what would be neat is over the year from just after Survivor Series have small tournaments on each show say 5 on each. The winners of each toruney get the right to be on their respective brands team in a War Games or Elimination match at the Survivor Series of the next year. Just adds some flavour to a brand war.

Yes...but only if they do it correctly to make it interesting.
The first year they did it and Bret Hart was the number one seed I was really getting into it, same as the year Billy Gunn won it. There's enough talent to compete in it and as alot of wrestlers are under used then I think they will have a chance to really prove themselves, there should be a mix of some main eventers with some midcarders, for example having people like RVD, Booker T, and others that are championship material but not currently in the feud for the title. Mixed with people such as Shelton Benjamin, Randy Orton and others that will be main eventers within a few years. The quarters, semis and the final should all be on the actual PPV too. |

I wouldn't do KOTR as a SD only show, only because if you do a tournament with what is considered the B-brand it will come off as a B-tournament, and who cares if someone is the winner of a secondary tournament? Its like winning the Triple A championship in baseball, does anyone think of them as a big time team?
I think it would be a great way to get a SD guy over if he were to win a KOTR tournament by defeating a RAW guy in the final. |
