2001 : A Space Odyssey

I watched this movie last night and I thought it was a good movie. Then after it goes to "Jupiter and beyond the infinite" and all the colors were swirling I didn't know what was going on. I mean what was with the room where there was an older version of that guy? If somebody could explain this I would appreciate it.
