Random Wrestling Rewind (8/15)

Moment: The Wedding of Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth.

Year: 1991

Today most of us wrestling fans will be watching WWE Summerslam on PPV, or if you are like me, who is not watching, you will be checking the wrestling websites waiting for the match results to be posted as the event progresses. Summerslam is the WWE's second biggest PPV of the year and has been around since 1988, when we saw the Mega Bucks take on the Mega Powers in the first ever main event of Summerslam. Over the years, Summerslam has provided the wrestling fans with many classic matches and many classic moments. Today, I will like to go back in time to Summerslam 1991, when we all witnessed the first ever wedding, but not the last, in the WWF, the wedding of 'Macho Man' Randy Savage and the lovely Miss Elizabeth.

Going back in time a little bit, Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth had a falling out ever since Savage turned heel on Hulk Hogan after their run as the Mega Powers. Savage picked up Sensational Queen Sheri as his new manager and was involved in feuds with such guys as Dusty Rhodes and the Ultimate Warrior after the Hogan feud ended. Although Savage had not been in the main event scene since Wrestlemania 5, he was still a great upper midcarder and one of wrestling's best heels.

At Wrestlemania Seven, Randy Savage took on the Ultimate Warrior in a "Retirement Match." The loser of the match would have to retire from wrestling. Or maybe it was just WWF wrestling. Well it doesn't matter because we all know the losers of those matches come back anyways. The outcome of the match would not go in Savage's favor as the Ultimate Warrior pulled out the victory after a very good match. The turning point came when Sheri made a mistake by costing Savage the match and therefore giving Warrior the victory.

After the match, Queen Sheri was furious with Savage, as now she too had no more careers in the WWF. So after a couple of minutes of Sheri screaming at Savage, Sheri starts kicking Savage in the stomach, who was still down from the Warrior beating. Queen Sheri continued the assault until out of nowhere, Miss Elizabeth, who was in the crowd, jumped the railing and ran to the ring to help Savage. Elizabeth gets to the ring and takes out Queen Sheri to a tremendous pop from the crowd. Savage gets back up and sees Elizabeth in the ring and thinks it was Elizabeth doing the beating on him. Sheri is on the outside saying it was Elizabeth and Elizabeth was saying it was Sheri. The crowd is screaming at Savage telling him it was Sheri that did the assault on Savage. After a brief moment, Savage goes up to Elizabeth and hugs her. The Pop from the crowd was as loud as ever and people were even crying all throughout the arena. A very touching moment indeed.

Flash forward to on of the WWE's Primetime shows. Savage and Elizabeth were in the ring with Mean Gene Okerlund conducting an interview. Savage said that he was thinking about returning to the ring at Summerslam. The Savage said that he loved Elizabeth and got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. Well, she said no and Savage looked like a complete loser on one knee in the middle of the ring. No, just kidding, Elizabeth said "Yes" and the two would get married in the middle of the ring at Summerslam 91. That's quite a crowd for a wedding right?

So we go to Summerslam 91 and the wedding ceremony. Before the ceremony comes about, we are treated to a video package on the history of Savage and Elizabeth. After that, Savage comes out looking like a complete moron in a white tuxedo, which if okay, but he also has on one of his famous wrestling hats, his wrestling robe w/ tassels running off the arms and his fricken glasses. For god's sake, this is a wedding not a match; let's get with it here Savage. Oh yeah, Savage also comes out to his theme music as his wedding entrance theme. Should of known right off the bat that this wasn't your regular wedding. Bobby Heenan is keeping the ceremony from being completely boring by constantly taking shots at Randy Savage. Heenan is simply amazing as an announcer.

The priest gets right to the "I do" part saving the fans from having to take a lot of bathroom breaks. Savage delivers the "I do" line by saying "Oh Yeahhhhhhhhhhh." Great to see Savage taking this seriously. Elizabeth comes right back and delivers the "I do" line with an "I Will." Wow, what's happening here? The rings are exchanged and they both kiss each other to a happy ending to the ceremony, well happy for now. We get to here Savage's theme again and Lord Alfred Hayes invites all the fans to the wedding after party.

We go to the party and Savage/ Elizabeth are shaking the hands of the guests, who are congratulating the couple on their marriage. Funny moment here as Heenan is on the line of guests, shaking his head, as Savage extends his hand to him. He doesn't even look at Savage and just keeps shaking his head. Savage says he feels sorry for Heenan. Once again, Heenan is classic.

Okerlund does a toast to Savage and Elizabeth and the couple has a dance with each other a minute later. Then Savage totally botches cutting the wedding cake and he actually directs Elizabeth to feed him some cake with her hands saying, "Me First." Wow, what an asshole. And just as I say this, we cut to Savage opening the gifts like a madman, not even taking the time to open the cards to see whom the gift was from. I think the Roids were really starting to get to him or as Gene put it, "A few cocktails." Sure Gene, whatever doesn't bring the WWF to court, right? Wow, Savage is totally gone as he continues opening gifts and one can even make an argument that Savage has absolutely no clue where he is anymore.

Okay let's get to the best part of this whole after party. The camera is directly pointed at Elizabeth as she is opening a gift. Yeah, you know something is coming. She opens a gift and suddenly, out pops a Cobra snake. Now who the hell would give a snake as a wedding present? Yep, you guessed it. Suddenly, Jake Roberts and Undertaker appear from out of nowhere. Undertaker, in his badass looking trench coat, nails Savage with the urn. The Jake grabs the Cobra and starts terrorizing Elizabeth with it. Now I know I said Savage was a little off before, but Jake seriously looks like he just snorted a line right before he came on camera. Thankfully, or maybe not, Sid Justice comes in with a chair for the save. Undertaker and Jake back off and the segment ends as people are screaming at the top of their lungs.

Afterthoughts: This was pretty cool as Jake had been gone for some time and was a babyface the last time we saw him. Undertaker wasn't really doing anything and these two were quite the force not to be messed with. the urn shot from Taker on Savage was pretty badass looking. Savage and Jake would go on to feud with each other for quite some time and did that cool angle where Savage got bitten by Jake's cobra. I don't remember them ever having a big blow off match though. That's pretty sad because it was a great and intense feud.

Well, that's it for today's edition of the Rewind. Enjoy your Summerslam tonight. Until Next Time:

RKO and Out.

Decent Post LC . I do remember Savage and Jake having a match at Tuesday in Texas, which was Savage's comeback match. Savage went over Jake, but Jake got one over on him with some DDT's after the match. Savage was selling those impressively, and it really did make you wanna hate Roberts.
