Help with DC++ and Direct Connect

Right, so I finally just downloaded both programs after hearing non stop about how great they are.

Only problem is that after entering a hub, EVERYBODY I attempt to connect to doesn't have anymore free slots. I've seriously gone through entire hubs of people attempting to connect to people, with no success.

Anybody know what the deal with this is?

Does it say they have no free slots? If that's the case then it's really just that..they don't have any slots open. There are a lot of good hubs that aren't on the Public list that would probably be best but you really just have to look around for them.

I was having a problem where I'd get a timeout error all the time and it's said to happen because of a firewall problem but I had no firewall at all.

Don't be fooled to thinking this is like most of the other P2P programs, this only lets you connect to one person at a time so get a good person with a great upload speed and you'll do fine but sometimes it can go pretty slow.

-takedown your windows firewall (or any sort of firewall you have)
-go into file>settings> and change it from active to passive adn vice versa until it works

Uninstall the Direct Connect client while you're at it, it's crap. DC++ is far, far better. Lets you use multiple hubs at once.

Also, use the search function (magnifying glass). Its results display the number of free slots the users have, so if it says they have 4/5 free and you try to download and get told there's none, try the stuff JJ suggested. Switching to passive mode tends to be a good fix, but it means you can't download from other users in passive mode (the ones with red brick thingies next to their name in the hub user list).
