Klepto Klown or someone else who isn't as retarded as me

OK, so my other PC was broken, and long story short we brought it in and got it fixed. Happy. Anyways, while we were at the computer shop, I was talking to the guy about maybe upgrading my PC, since it runs pretty shitty even when playing something like Age of Mythology. Basicallyyy I just want a faster processor probably, and more RAM. I don't know anything about hardware other than the bare basics.

So uhhhh... okay, the guy was saying how we could get some Asus motherboard and an AMD 2600 processor or something, and that would cost around $270 (Canadian). I don't even know if that is a good price or what. I'm not even sure if AMD's are good or not, I remember teh Klown badmouthing them a few times so y'know Mind you, I'm not really looking for a powerhouse PC or anything, just a bit of an upgrade to run a few games more smoothly. Cost isn't the primary issue, but it's something I'd like to keep in mind since I'm gonna be paying for this myself. Including the RAM, I don't wanna spend over, say, $400. I don't know how much processors and motherboards and all that fun stuff "normally" go for, so I don't know if this is a big rip-off or what. Just trying to get some input from some more computer-savvy (such a gay word) people, so I can get my PC looking a bit better.

For the record, I have no idea what my current system specs are like, really. I have a Pentium III 800 mhz processor, and 256 mb of... I'm pretty sure it's SDRAM, but it might be the other kind. Pretty sure it's SD though, 'cause I know that both our PCs have opposite kinds, and that one has DDR or whatever. Stupid Vega.

Chewbaccaness aside, throw me a bone here

amd = the sucks

its probably a AMD sempron processor as well.

Rough pricings...

512mb ddr ram = 110 bucks
Intel P4 Prescott 3.0 Ghz = 275
Gigabyte motherboard (better than asus IMO) = 100

so thats more than you want to spend, for a p4 processor you're looking in the 200-300 range. You could go for a celeron processor, which is like 120 bucks for a 2.6 ghz processor. But they're not nearly as good for higher end gamming. You can still play high end games, just not at optimal performance.

For example, I just had Doom 3 on a celeron 2.4 GHz with a gig of ram and a 128meg video card...it ran perfectly fine, but on 800x600 resolution on medium details.

If you're ok with running on lower resolutions, the celeron is fine.

If 400 bucks is your limit, a Celeron 2.6GHz is 120, 512MB ram is 110, and a gigabyte board that will support that is about 100 bucks. 330 + tax = 376

also, what type of video card are you running? If you're running a shit graphics card, all the ram and the fastest processor wont help you out.

I swear by AMD for all my systems. They make the top of the line processors in my opinion. If you're looking to keep your same memory then you're going to need to keep in mind what type it is when looking for a motherboard. That can cause some problems when you get a motherboard that won't run your memory. AMD Athlon XPs or 64s are going to be a cheaper and higher quality buy.

The system I'm running now is on an Abit NF7-S with an Athlon XP 3000+ and it runs amazing. You can get both of those pretty cheap as well.

oh yeah...athlon XP 3000(2.16GHz) is 10 bucks cheaper than the prescott 3.0GHz

Intel Prescott 3.0 is better than the AMD 3000+.

Honestly though...its Coke and Pepsi, your average user isnt really going to be able to tell the difference. AMD users will swear by AMD, and Intel users will swear by Intel. Both companies are fine, in the end, you'll be able to do what you want to do, regardless of which processor you pick.

My main beef with AMD is that they run their processors hotter, and because of that, the company I work for has a higher ratio of returned dead AMD cpu's than Intel. Thats the main reason I will stick with Intel, duribility. Performance wise, it doesnt really matter what CPU you choose.

Yeah I don't think it will matter too much about the difference between Intel or AMD, I've just always gone with Intel. My last processor was a 633 MHz Celeron which was alright, the one I have now is a 2 GHz Pentium 4, all my games (including AoM, UT 2004, WC3) all run fine, and I turn all my resolutions up to 1024x768, I think on WC3 I have like max settings for everything.

The only thing I will recommend, is buy at least 512 DDR RAM, I have that now and I am looking to get more, the minimum/recommended specs for games now is getting close to 512, so I want to distance the gap a bit more if you will, just so I know I can run the game pretty well.

I am running a shit video card right now though (Geforce 4 MX 420) so that comes next. :[

Yeah, I would say 512 RAM is the minimum now, even if the boxes don't say so. 1 Gig is definitly recommended.

I agree on the heat issue. It seems that on the AMD systems we have used they tend to "hiccup" at inopertune times (such as April 14th when the staff is in the middle of last minute tax returns ) We've gone straight Intel pIV and haven't had any processor issues.

I heard that AMD is gradually catching up to Intel and will overtake them soon.

If you think they haven't, they will soon. Their processors are better for overclocking, so maybe that's why I'm partial to them. Their layout for their new 64s are what is going to overtake Intel.

Yeah so, a month or so later, ifnally decided to upgrade. I went with an AMD in the end, because that was the best deal I was being offered. Going to an AMD 3.0 ghz processor, and new motherboard with 512 mb of DDRAM, for like $350. All this, just to play stupid World of Warcraft.

On my other PC right now, waiting for it to get back so I can enjoy the downfall of my social life

AMD Makes good processors, I was an AMD fanboy, until I got lazy with cooling when I overclocked. Still think they are a superior Processor, Intel's are just easier

yeah, but it performs pretty much on par with a 3ghz pentium. Real world performance, and in benchmarks.
Like someone said earlier, it's coke or pepsi. I just like my pepsi colder and more fizzy
