Bad sportsmanship?

Every Tuesday I read that one column on NFL.com by Gregg Easterbrook called 'Tuesday Morning Quarterback'. It's a good column filled with random stats and happenings over the past week. Anyways, the past couple weeks he's talked about a college that totally blows other schools out like every week. Winning games by like 70 points. And they continue to run up the score, even in the fourth quarter. Like in one game, they were up 63-7 and ran a fake punt. And they pass a lot in the fourth quarter, rather than run out the clock, etc.

Anyways, is that just really bad sportsmanship? I mean, personally I feel that in any game, you want to keep trying to win to prevent any sort of comeback. I mean, just look at the Seattle/St. Louis game last week, when St. Louis came back after a 17-point deficit and won in OT. So yeah, it's good to keep playing until the game is over, IMO. But I mean, where do you draw the line? Being up 50, 60 points is a bit ridiculous. How can you justify demeaning a team like that? Realistically, there is no way they will ever come back from that. That is just bad sportsmanship. What do you think?

because the coach is an asshole. if you're up by a ridiculous amount and you run a fake punt and pass the ball then fuck you i hate coaches like that. wow, you run up the score on a crappy team. hmmm kinda sounds like oklahoma...

When Oklahoma ran the score up on A & M last year it was because A&M just wasn't trying. They weren't throwing bombs in the 4th quarter or anything.

What school is this one they are talking about? I wonder if it is St. Johns in Minnesota. They were D-3 national champions last year and I heard they always win by a lot.

In the old college ranking system, part of what seperated teams was margin of score... hence teams like Miami or Florida State would be up 40 and go for it on 4th down.

That why I love Piterno, even then, he wouldn't run up the score.

Fuck that, you'd only stop scoring for your own sake, not for the other team's. Like, if your players were tired, you could throw on reserves who never get a game and let them play as hard as they want. Or take the foot off the gas and save some energy.

It is the other team's fault for being shit. If they can't take it, they can pull out and play elsewhere, where their feelings won't get hurt.

Yea, for football, you just throw in your backups and run the ball. If you proceed to run the ball into the endzone then its the other teams fault.

Running fake punts and shit isn't really needed but eventually that coach will get his. Some year his team will be shit, and everyone will run the score up on him. What goes around comes around.

I'd say it's more patronising to go easy on the opposition. Fine, if you do it for your own sake, like to conserve energy or to try out new tactics/players, but easing off for your opposition's sake is crazy.

But it's different for "soccer", which I mostly watch, since even if a team is dominant, scoring can still be pretty difficult.

I don't see why they should ease up. Look at it this way Stima's team set a new record a couple of weeks ago by hammering some team if they'd eased off they wouldn't have.

Nah, fuck the other team. If they suck to the point that they get beat 63 - 7, they don't deserve to be on the field. If anything that should be a wake up call to train harder and play with more heart and whatnot.

I don't think it's bad sportsmanship. The team are huge assholes and they know it. Also, why not get the most playing time you can? Try out new plays like fake punts. You have the game won so you can take risks like that, just to see how your team executes. It's like a practice session, but you are playing in a real game.

friend of mine coached pop warner year agos and the league kicked out the head coach cause they were up in a game, they had their last string, playing wrong posistions (ie: the QB was a DL, etc.) and they ran a 1/2 back option a play that with the current personal never should have worked and probably should have been a turnover...

well, it worked.

the parents took a hissy and the league didn't let the coach back next year.

Nows thats disgraceful him not getting back over winning too well basically. Also I odn't know the format of American Football, but in soccer in leauge games you get 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw and if teams are level on points the higher spot in the leauge goes to who has the best goal difference ( goals scored - goals conceded ) so its in the teams best interest to keep scoring is there nothing like that in AMerican Football or other American sports if so it definitly can't be bad sportsmanship

I dont think it is bad sportmanship in a football case.. Football is taught to not stop, and practically kill your opponete. It is just how the sport is played.

Well, a line should be drawn I think. SOmetimes teams just don't have the talent to compete. Sometimes teams are just bigger, better, and stronger. Example. My 10th grade year we had a team that sucked for homecoming. My coach left the seniors till the fourth quarter and then put the scrubs (me lol) in while it was...34-0 I do believe. We won 46-6, which isn't all that bad haha. The opposing coach said he would remember it, and he did. My junior year we went to there place and they hadnt won a game. They put 50 on us, 50-30. Went for two point conversions every single time. Left his starters in the whole game, pretty bad considering we didn't do shit like that, we just left the seniors in till the fourth because of homecoming and all. Well, my senior year we had to go there again due to allignment re-adjusting, and we remembered it all too well. He took me and the rest of the starters out midway third when we had it well in hand, 36-0.

Now, I think if you run fake punts and stuff such as passing on first or second down when your up 30 or 40 points in the 4th quarter, its pretty pathetic. But if you are running dives, traps, counters, etc. and still scoring, it's the opposing team's duty to stop you. Especially if you have the second string or third in. The top team in our region just beat the fourth team 83-7 and people called for poor sportsmanship. Turned out it was 56-0 at halftime, and the starters came out midway through the third quarter or before because their coach said he had to leave them in longer to get into playoff shape. The team's starters haven't had to play any second half besides the first game and the game against us. In the first half the top team averaged two plays a drive...two plays. The team's first team D couldn't even stop the other's 8th and 9th graders. When something like that happens, it isn't poor sportsmanship. You aren't going to tell your scrubs not to try and score, that would just be stupid coaching wise, but you aren't going to run fake punts and be passing up 30-40 points, I don't think you should anyway.

Like I said, it all depends on the situation...but from what you described, I would call it bad sportsmanship and bad class. But then again, that's just coming from a soon to be coach.

Also, to throw in with VEL's point. A guy wrote in to a forum and commented on the situation. He said the way he would solve it is he told the offensive line if they did a good enough job, they could run the ball at the end of the game. So, when they would get up enough, he would flip the players (Skill players such as QB, RB, WR, etc. would play the line and the line would play their positions.) Most of the lineman were too slow to score and the QB's and skill players grew to appreciate the job the offensive line did. It was a winning situation for everybody, as the lineman blocked better to run the ball and the QB learned to appreciate them a HECK of a lot more, while the opposing team didn't get pissy about the score being run up.
