"Bret Screwed Bret"
NO.... This is NOT to re-hash the Montreal "screwjob," which I think almost everyone has had more than enough of, but it's to add an interesting twist.
Right now, I'm watching "The Monday Night War" tape, and Montreal of course was a part of that. What's interesting though, is a comment from Mick Foley.... "Deep down, I don't think Vince believed that to be true (that 'Bret screwed Bret'). I think Vince believed, as I believe, that Vince screwed Bret; but by playing it the other way, I think he very subtly became a heel in the minds of millions of people. So, what I'm suggesting, is that Vince never really thought that "Bret Screwed Bret." I think Vince simply said that to get a heel response, and to become the evil "Mr. McMahon" (in an effort to bring up the ratings). Any thoughts? Oh yeah, Vince would screw over his biggest draw for charcter development. Even if he was going to WCW, there would have always been the chance of Bret returning. Yeah, it's true, it's all a work! Except Bret wasn't in on it and was pissed off to no end.

I'm not saying the Montreal incident was at all a "work." I do wonder, however, if maybe Vince's comment that "Bret Screwed Bret" was said simply to create the "Mr. McMahon" character.

But Bret was never a draw. Ric Flair (the greatest wrestler of all time) said so

Yeah Vince did use the incident to create Mr McMahon. He said it himself that most of the wrestling fans around the world thought of Vince as the devil himself and hated him so why not use that.

Thats the problem with Ric Flair, although he is a legend, he can still say some of the most stupid things ever.

Maybe Vince built off the steam from the speech for the creation of Mr. McMahon, but I doubt that it was orignally intended to create anything but a sort of explanation of what happened...

McMahon will do anything for money. I'm sure he did say it just to garner attention. By breaking a binding contract and (thus the law), there is no logical reasoning to say "Bret screwed Bret".

I don't think that Vince was thinking anything specifically when he said that, other than "what can I say that will make me look better in this situation."

Although I think the screwjob was more of a stunt. Not on Hart's part, but on Vince's. The more I think about it, I think it had very little to do with the way Hart left the company, but how Vince could create some momentum. Not something I want to get in to at the moment though.

Bret screwerd Bret. I don't care how much of an asshole Vince can be. He's the boss, and he knew Bret was leaving for a company that once tried to buy out Vince's company. So, he took the title away from him, stripped him of most of his crediblity, and then used that on his show for a ratings spike.
Now with much respect to Bret Hart, I understand him not wanting to job to his country men, but that would be like JBL not wanting to drop the title in Atlanta because even though he doesn't like their it's his home country. I've heard people say "Oh, when HBK had the belt Vince let him keep it instead of jobbing." Who cares? As much of a fuck up as he is, Vince was, and still isl the aplha and the omega of the WWE. |

Every time Vince comes on the air for one reason or another, it's for a reason. The question you have to ask yourself now is, if HHH totally no-sold a match because he decided to make a script change at the last second to keep the championship, would vince come on the air and talk about how his opponent had it coming? When something like this happens, 9 times out of 10, the WWE WANTS us to forget it. That one time out of ten that they mention it, it's to use it for more ratings. Somebody must have told Vince that he could run with this, and he did.
