Two fine films I have seen recently

Neither has a topic, though they are not obscure or anything.

At the weekend I caught Roger Dodger on cable. Been keeping an eye for it for a while, after seeing a trailer for it on some DVD. It's about this smooth-talking guy called Roger who's been fucked around by his older lover (who is also his boss). When he is at a low ebb, his 16 year old nephew comes to visit him (in New York, where he lives) begging to be taught the ways of seducing women so he can lose his virginity. Roger is supposedly a lady's man, so he takes the kid out for a night and tries to teach him the art of flirting and seducing women.

There is some kind of lesson involved there also, that you have to watch to see since it'll ruin the story if I go further. No matter, it's a funny film with sharp dialogue and great performances.

Tonight on cable I watched the Laramie Project, which I believe is perhaps a film aired on HBO in the USA? If so, HBO must be the greatest TV channel of all time, and must be the home of literally 100% of good American shows.

The Laramie Project is a documentary about the true story of the murder of a young gay man in a place called Laramie, in Wyoming. The documentary is filmed entirely with actors playing all the roles, from the people involved to the documentary makers themselves. Originally, a theatre group went to Laramie to find out what happened with the murder and the repercussions in the town, and turned it into a theatre play. This is the screen adaption.

The cast is pretty huge, since you have people playing small parts of the many people involved. It's also excellent, and the performances are outstanding.

Both films get around a 7 on imdb, I think. Which is good.

From Paul Berne's autobiography:

Damien Gates tried to use me as a way back into football. That dirty English cunt knew his career was finished and he tried to drag me down with him, attempting to keep me up by reminising about the old times. I could see beneath his lies however, right to the point where I just wanted to smack that bastard.

'I knew I hadn't played well that day, I knew the team hadn't performed to his capabilities but by golly, his head shake made me want to destroy his face'
