Best way to Backup files before a format?
Yeah, this is probably a n00bish question, but what's the best way to save all your crap to CDs before you reformat your harddrive?

I don't want to just back up all my files and program installation files, becuase it would take forever to re-install all my programs and get everything back to the way it was before the format.

Is there anyway I can backup my entire computer the exact way it is onto multiple CD-RWs, and then restore it entirely, so that I wouldn't even notice the difference once everything is restored through the CDs? Is there a program that helps do this, or even a windows tool?

I wouldnt really do it that way, whats the point of a reinstall if you just whack all the old crap and drivers back in? A clean install with SP2 slipstreamed is the only way to go.

I only back up favorites, address book, and all my crap I use.
everything else can be put back. Mainly drivers, always look around for updates first, then reformat with the new ones ready to go.

I am sure you could use something like Norton ghost to do a full backup.
But I would rather put in a few hours work than a pre bloated OS.

yeah you're right about that but i Just don't have the time or patience to do all that, since the purpose of me formatting isn't to clean up my system or make it run better.

I'll look into Norton Ghost, I imagine it's not free and It would take a while to find it, so does anyone know of any free programs that can do this?

In future i'd partition your drive and just save anything you want to keep on the seperate drive. I lost soo much shit in the past it just makes sense

I just have all my setup stuff on my secondary drive, it only took me like a day to get everything back the way it was, the only annoying thing is changing all the configurations and options in all the programs you use, I find.
