What do you look for more in a drummer?
Speed or technique?
You can only pick one. Why do you pick that one? |

Techinque. Why? Because alot of people can play fast and sound sloppy.

Any drummer that can play Midway Through Infinity by Dark Tranquillity flawlessly is good enough for me.

technique, cause technique would incorporate speed.

Technique Vs. Speed...
Neal Peart Vs. Lars Ulrich (and not much speed at that) That's pretty obvious. |

If I like what they play, I don't care what they have. Technique or speed.
I could really like a song with a drummer in it that has no technique, or really hate a song with a drummer that has technique. |

I look for skill with the instrument. That would fall under technique.
Then again, as humpy has pointed out, someone with technique is likely to have speed too. Above those two, I look for someone with a strong and intuitive sense of rhythm. Very important to a drummer. However, as I've said before, playing fast with no capacity to play well sucks. Makes me wonder how anyone can listen to Ulrich live without cringing. |

Why would you use Lars Ulrich as an example for speed? He can't even play Dyers Eve: a song he wrote.

That would be a talent issue though, wouldn't it?
I notice that the faster he tries to play, the more he sucks, so I guess it's a good way to differentiate speed and technique.

But he doesn't even play fast. All Metallica songs have the same simple beat, except for the verses of Dyers Eve [where he kills himself doing double kick].
A good example of a speed drummer: Jaska Raatikainen of Children of Bodom. He's far from the most technical, but he's very fast. |

And the funny part is his inability to even play that much live...
Well, he can, he just has no sense of rhythm. |

Technique vs Speed
Asgeir Mickelson [Borknagar, Spiral Architect] vs Hellhammer [Mayhem, Arcturus] It really depends on the music. |

Sorry, I should have been more specific. I put Lars because he tries to go fast with his double bass.

To be more specific on what I mean, I would classify technique with drummers from APC, Tool, and Mudvayne.
Speed would be *insert trash band here who does snare snare snare snare snare snare snare* |

Do you like drummers that play really fast but sound like crap whenever they slow down. Or do you prefer drummers who can keep good time and rhythm.
That's pretty much it. |

He's not all that great a drummer slow, and the faster he tries to play, the worse he is. Problem with many of the "speed" drummers listed here is that they still have good technique. |

Incidentally, I prefer someone who can do both. play fast, and play well in anything they try to play. This is an A or B decision, just pointing out I'd prefer A AND B.

My band uses a drum machine, a human drummer couldn't physically play what we do, unless it was two drummers using V Kits...

I haven't really heard anything from Cryptopsy that made me think polyrhythm.

Drumsticks. MMMMMMMM.
![]() Anyway, hard to say. I'm so ****ing bored with this monotonous speed metal/death/thrash drumming.. as Ninti mentioned, an overload of snare drum. Trust me, the presence of neverending double bass drumming will always be a portion on my plate... but there ARE other percussive instruments beyond cymbals, snare, toms, and bass drums. It's nice to hear those plus some other drums in a complex or abstract rhythm. But I am going to say technique. There is nothing technical about incredibly slow drumming if you wanna get stingy, so a moderate tempo with some intense variation in musical elements is definately better than high tempos that can only be matched by a crackwhore giving a handjob. With that in mind, unless you follow the "2 rhythms or more" rule we've discussed on this forum before, the mindless molestation of a drumkit that is Cryptopsy doesn't deserve much credit as far as polyrhythm goes IMO. Complex doesn't cut it either. Last edited by Joeleosis; 01-14-2004 at 08:53 PM. Reason: I need to stop spelling rhythm wrong. |
