DISCUSSION - In the future, should the CW title become a "Welterweight" title?

DISCUSSION - In the future, should the CW title become a "Welterweight" title?

Just a quick thought:

If the "weight" category of the Cruiserweight Division was elevated (and in effect, it would become the 'Welterweight Division), then....

A) Higher profiles stars such as Eddie Guerrero, RVD, Christian, Chris Jericho, and Matt Hardy could perhaps compete in the division one day.

B) Because of these 'respected' competitors taking part, this sort of title/division may actually get more respect from management (and hence - giving the CW's more TV time).

From the looks of it, it doesn't seem like Christian, RVD, Chris Jericho, or Matt Hardy will be main-eventing anytime soon. Even Guerrero may be headed this way. If guys like this compete in this division, then perhaps the "Welterweight" division can be made to look almost as...or just as...important as the ACTUAL world title(s).....kinda like we see in boxing.

Thoughts?

yeah, that'd be cool, but there's only one problem. The wwe can hardly make any titles as important as the WWE/World title. Look at the IC and US titles, look at the european, cruiserweight, women's and (sadly defunct) hardcore titles. These are, hell yeah, all interesting categories. But the WWE/World title still (sadly again) owns the main event, doesn't it? But yeah, I like the Welterweight idea.

Good point, and I agree. One problem that the WWE currently has, is that there is often a huge gap between the mid-card titles and their world titles.

Think back to 1998 however.

Remember when Austin, Foley, Kane, and Taker were dominating the main-event scene?

It didn't matter however. Guys like HHH, The Rock, Jeff Jarret, Ken Shamrock, Owen Hart, etc. made the IC division look like f'cking GOLD!

Even in 2000 - While Triple H and The Rock dominated the main-event scene, guys like Jericho, Benoit, and Angle made the IC division look like a million bucks.

That's sort of what I hope happens with the WELTERWEIGHT division idea.

Obviously - it won't quite be on par with the MAIN world title(s), but

a) There will be a large number of competitors....with star power

b) The quality of wrestling should be quite high.

One problem I see with the current CW division, is that guys like London, Chavo Guerrero, and Kidman aren't exposed to higher quality opponents. Throw Eddie, Jericho, Hardy, etc. in there, and what you'll get is a higher likelihood of fans actually caring about the Billy Kidman's and the Paul London's.

I think it would be an interesting idea, however I think if WWE would just use the talent they have now and had use the talent they once had the CW division would be as good if not better than the X Division. For a lot of the guys you mentioned the CW title is wrong direction for their careers. Both Eddie and Jericho held the title many years ago in WCW. Christian once held the CW title too many years ago as well if I'm not mistaken, and WWE already lets Matt Hardy compete in the division. It would be seen as a move downward for these wrestlers. As far as RVD, I could be wrong but I think he is the biggest guy you mentioned, how much were you talking about increasing the weight limit?

I'm not sure. I guess it could vary depending on who the WWE wanted in that division.

RVD's doing jack shit anyways. He may as well be a part of something like that.

How much does RVD weight? 235 lbs?

Maybe 240 lbs. can be the limit.

Guys like Batista, Angle, Booker T, JBL, Orton, Edge, Triple H, Taker, Kane, Benoit, and HBK are all above 240 as far as I know.

I don't mind the idea, but I think if they just kicked it up to 230lbs (which is a 10lbs increase) then the division would be soaring.

The WWE does have a large enough talent pool to make a division work as it is, but they don't seem to have the dedication tot hese little guys. Yes, it has been said before, but I think these guiys should get more of a chance.

The reaction Paul London got for his backflip off the apron at the RR was outstanding. Image if they had about 10 of those spots in a cruiserweight match? Maybe they could have a PPV dedicated to it, or just have one match take place at every PPV where SmackDown is involved?

problem is.

You increase the weight, then what happens to guys like Nunzio and Paul London.
They will get even less of a go if that were to happen, because bigger guys would be in.

I say just keep it how it is now, but get some better cruiserweights...or use the ones they have now better
