I'd like to see The Stand made into a proper movie not a mini series as I think it would be excellent.

the stand was a pretty long novel, i don't think they could cram it all into a 2-3 hour movie. the miniseries must've been like 6 hours or so.

Yeah, he claims he's making this prequel "As tolkien always intended."

This will include some minor changes, including the controversial "bilbo Shoots First" scene, similarly controversial scenes which establish Sauron NOT as a bad guy, but as a whiny little kid with too much power.

The Dark Materials Trilogy, by Phillip Pullman. How Harry Potter has become a phenomenon ahead of these superior kids books I'll never know.

I know it's been made into a stage play, but it's to imagine being able to cover the scope of the books on a stage.

Well, both of those. The Dark Materials trilogy came 3rd in a huge BBC book vote that ran for months here, beating the Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Harry Potter. The trilogy finished behind Lord of the Rings and Pride and Prejudice. Both of the top 2 have had their profiles boosted by being turned into a film and a popular TV series, respectively.

I say there is potential there. It's an incredible series of books too. I feel it's on a par to the story of the Lord of the Rings, and deals some lofty concepts for a "kids" book.

I recommend them.

I'll likely check 'em out sometime.

I know Pullman by name, but not really by much more.

It's frustrating sometimes to see good material kinda rot in limbo while the run of the mill gets eaten up by some promotional obsession. Harry Potter was a wave a ton of people rode. I knew people who raved about the books that knew less about the series than I did. I wasn't too terribly impressed by the series as far as I actually got, though they were much better written than most of the "Children's books" I've read. That's not necessarily high praise: Being better than dumbed-down crap should be expected of anyone literate. I guess I'd say my reference point is a little...Skewed.

Yeah It was 6 hours, longer with commercials and everything. It was quite well done as well. A movie would not be possible without destorying half the story.

A Boy Called "It" would make a great movie, although they'd probably **** up the casting and put someone like Jake Lloyd in it as the main character. Also, I don't know how well a child-abuse movie would go over in the mainstream media.


Wayside Stories from Wayside School could be really spectacular if it was put into the hands of the right director. Maybe even Sachar himself.

Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy, come to mention it.

Douglas Adams was in the process of getting the books set up to be shot as a film when he died. There was an old TV series, but the effects were pathetic. Adams felt that the late 90s brought CGI effects that would do the book justice. I thinka major studio (can't remember which one, I'll look it up) has owned the rights for a long time, but they questioned whether a sci-fi comedy film could really become a blockbuster. I think this viewpoint has changed now, and there is still talks to get the books shot.

I think I put up a link on the new forums, but maybe not. Doug's official site says hitchhiker's is back on. Dunno about the rest of the books, but that may depend upon how the first one does.

Likewise. I'd like something slicker than the BBC miniseries, but I want true to the books. Anything else is a MAJOR disservice to everything that makes the books good.

They need to get someone in who loves the books, and won't bow to casting all American LA stars, who'll cast by character rather than how big the names are e.g. like Peter Jackson with Lord of the Rings. Viggo Mortenson is somewhat of a jobbing actor, but it's hard to imagine anyone else playing that role now.

You read any of Dennis Lehane's novels? I didn't realise it when I was reading them all, but supposedly he's the king of crime fiction now or something like that. One of his books, Mystic River, was filmed last year.

I recommend his other books for detective type stuff.

He wrote a whole series involved a particular detective...can't remember the order, but I think they start with "A Drink Before the War". Read the first in the series, if you like it you'll love the rest.

Mystic River is seperate from that series of books, but it's still brilliant.
