PSP sales 'solid, not spectacular'
PSP sales 'solid, not spectacular'
Analyst: After one week, specialty retailers are sold out, but others have plenty on hand. March 31, 2005: 11:54 AM EST By Chris Morris, CNN/Money staff writer NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Sony's PSP might be a hit with critics, but consumers seem slightly less enthusiastic about the portable gaming machine. Only 50 of 150 retailers surveyed by American Technology Research reported sell-outs of the PlayStation Portable in its first week. Analyst P. J. McNealy described the launch as "solid but not spectacular". Of the 100 stores AmTech surveyed that were not sold out of PSPs, 15 reported having three units or less. Others reported higher levels, with some having as many as 100 in hand. "We believe that the PSP has come close to shipping its target1 million units in North America, with a range of 475,000 to 575,000 sold to date in the U.S. with roughly another 250,000 to 300,000 in the channel," wrote McNealy, who said he still believes Sony will sell 4.5 million to 5.5 million PSPs in North America this calendar year. Sony (Research) has not released any official sales numbers for the PSP. The Nintendo DS, which many say the PSP competes with, sold 500,000 units in its first seven days on the market in North America. The DS, however, went on sale during the 2004 holiday season which is typically a much busier sales period. Specialty retailers, such as GameStop (Research) and Electronics Boutique (Research), are generally sold out of the PSP, according to McNealy. Many big box stores, such as Wal-Mart (Research) and Target (Research), received more PSPs than they had been expecting and still have inventory in many locations. Other retailers, such as Toys R Us (Research) and Circuit City (Research), he wrote, still have inventory. "We are hesitant to draw any macro-level conclusions about the success or failure of the PSP and impact on the video game publishers simply because we are onlyseven days into the PSP launch in North America," said McNealy. "To put this in perspective, while the PSP has been launched amidst much hype, the expected financial impact on the video game publishers for the March quarter has been minimal and, in our opinion, is more of a case of headline risk than actual material impact right now," he wrote. Sony's (Research) U.S. shares edged higher in morning New York Stock Exchange trading. Find this article at: http://money.cnn.com/2005/03/31/tech...sales/?cnn=yes “There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.”--John Rogers |

The market's flooded with handheld games. I'm sure they'll do well with their sales, but many consumers have already bought a gameboy or whatever.

I'm sure if they had released in the holiday season, they would have outdone the DS.

Quality of games of quantity. Playstation has always had the higher quality games over the other systems, and more of them. Sure, Nintento and X-box have had some good games, but most of their good games (not all, but most) are cross-consoles anyway, and are on the PS2. My friend, who was a die-hard DS fan, even admits that the DS really only has a few games going for it right now... zelda, mario.... and well, that's about it. Oh, and apparently that new Wario game whatever it is. And the DS has been out for a while now... I think the PSP will surpass it quickly.. with PS2 quality graphics, MP3 ability, and DVD ability, as well as attachable speakers... Well, there's simply more reasons to get one. Hey, maybe when nintendo comes out with their -new- handheld (supposedly, the DS was never meant to be their new best thing.. they've got something else in the making), then they'll come out on top again in that department.

Nintendo's top games are exclusive to Nintendo not "cross-consoles", hell I can't even think of a top Nintendo game right now besides soul calibur (which is LINK exclusive anyway) that is available on another console. Your argument works for X-box though.
Mario, Zelda and Warioware? You have to be kidding me... I'm not even gonna argue that. Graphics aren't everything, if you want MP3s go buy an MP3 player, if you want DVDs buy a portable DVD player. DS doesn't need attachable speakers, it's sound quality is as good as watching something on TV. PSP offers nothing new to the handheld world, besides good graphics, a whole lot of shit that has NOTHING to do with gaming, dead pixels and disc read errors. DS > PSP |

Why go out and buy a DS for portable gaming, an MP3 player so I can listen to MP3s, and then go out and spend even more money on a portable DVD player when I can spend one amount and get that plus more with the PSP?
Maybe half of the top 10 games are exclusive, but it's not like the PS2 or Xbox don't have anything to challenge the others with. And I wouldn't say that Soul Calibur 2 is a top game anymore, seeing as how it came out about a year and a half ago. Blaming the dead pixels on Sony is a terrible shot, as any LCD has a chance of getting dead pixels. The only fault they have in any of the it there, is the fact they put and LCD in the PSP. And where did you get Disk Read Errors? I haven't heard one report of a DRE on the PSP. Ever. |

Still, after owning 3 nintendo systems, and only 1 playstation, and having played both the previous gameboys as well as the DS, and now the PSP.. I can still say the PSP will win out in the end. It's simply better in all aspects, and has more diversity.
As I said before.. maybe nintendo's new handheld which is the one they -meant- to be their next-gen handheld, will be better than the PSP.. who knows. |

I'm not a bigger fan of either in general, but in the current way things are going, sony is just making better systems.

I heard the PSP is very faulty. Particularly, the dead pixels. My friend, who works a target, says it is so bad, that they won't even put it on display.

When most people buy a handheld gaming system, they want it for gaming. Gamers may see it as an added bonus, but it's not a bonus since you are paying the extra price for those features that just aren't needed when most people just want a gaming system.
I can't see someone saying "I need an mp3 player.. maybe I should buy a psp since It comes with one" Maybe very few people will say "I want a gaming system and an mp3 player, horray" but that's it.. and again.. there are only few people in that situation. |

Well I suppose I'm one of those people then. I haven't got any games consoles at the moment and have been thinking about getting a portable DVD player for a while, so I might as well just get a PSP since it can play both films and games (yes I know you have to get films on UMD not DVD). That and the games comming out for the PSP appeal to me more than the ones for the DS; all that cartoony stuff like Mario just doesn't interest me.

I'm not too surprised at the sales thus far. A lot of people still aren't exactly sure what to think of the PSP. I own a SP and I love it, but I'm in no hurry to run out and get a DS. I haven't seen any games on the horizon that have interested me in the slightest, not to mention that the developers seem to have no clue how to fully utilize the dual screen capabilities. Other than showing a map, it's fairly useless at the moment.
If sony continues to fully support the PSP, I really think they will out do Nintendo in the long run. They already have more games out than Nintendo did for DS at it's launch, and from what I hear, they all play quite well. I'll probably end up getting one in a few months, as I have wanted a portable video device of some kind, and I'd like a new handheld. |

the PSP sale are not there yet but in time they will be up there.
I've tried them both and looked at both game lineups and PSP owns in the gaming selection including the games they are plannin on comin out wiht ![]() but as far as actual gameplay and graphics, PSP wins but not by a land slide. Still overall the PSP is the better and in time the sales will jump and surpass the DS. Nintendo is good but Sony just seems to be better. |

I really like what I've seen from the PSP, but I'll wait until they fix the whole pixel thing before I get one.

It's not their fault for the pixel thing. It's going to be a problem because they are using an LCD. The dead pixels are like a grain of sand so they are practically invisibile to the eye unless you stare at it. If there is more then 20 then you can get a replacement as well.

Im not too sure about either console, but im leaning towards the DS a lot more than the PSP, mainly because of the PSPs price and the backwards compatability between the DS and the GBA.
I mean both consoles have shitty line ups so far, but at least with the DS you can buy some excellent GBA games to go with it. |

IT not being sony's fault doesn't magically make the dead pixel go away.. it's there whether it's sony's fault or not.. it's part of the psp. |

The basic package out there is 250... that gives you the system, a sampler disc, a protective case, wrist band, 32mb memory car, remote, headphones, and some have spiderman 2 in them.
I picked one up the other day with ridge racer, tony hawk, lumines, and mlb. I didn't really plan on getting one but am glad I did. I am really enjoying it. |

For trying both, I will say that the DS is infinitely superior on the gameplay/fun level. I don't care for MP3s and such.
