Question A PS2 Question

Ok my PS2 is like dead, I try to play a disc and it always says "Disc Read Error," Captain Obvious says the laser eye is burnt out. So I need to decide if I should ship it to Sony and have them repair it, if so how much would it prolly cost me? Would it just be easier for me to just buy a new one?

Thanks.

Did you try cleaning it first?

Also, do you have an Electronics Boutique (EB Games) nearby?

They have a deal at the one nearest to me where they'll sell you a refurbed PS 2 for 99 bucks if you trade in your broken one. Last time I checked Sony's prices, they charged a flat repair fee of @ 140 bucks for repairing a PS2 that was no longer under warranty. That may have gone down with price drops and whatnot, but it's the reason I decided not to fix my PS2 and instead buy a 90 buck DVD player instead.

Referrer Link Error

On every single HTML page of GameFAQs is the following request:
Feel free to link to this page, but not directly to the FAQs..
You're seeing this error message because it appears that you're linking from an external site directly to one of the text files stored at GameFAQs. GameFAQs is not a free public file server. Bandwidth costs money, and when sites link directly to files stored on the site, it becomes both a financial and resource drain. We've tried asking, but some sites simply don't care, so now we've implemented a technical solution.

Your browser is reporting that you linked to a GameFAQs-hosted FAQ from http://www.tpww.net/forums/showthrea...4290#post64290.

There are four possible reasons you are seeing this message:

You came from a direct link to a FAQ on GameFAQs from another site, and your link was properly blocked. See the paragraph above for why.
Your web browser is passing improper URL data in the Referrer header. Your web browser may be over-compensating for a mistake you made in the address bar, and passing this information unintentionally. To fix this, just click the "Home" link on the left and surf normally.
Your web browser is passing forged URL data in the Referrer header. Some browsers can be configured to hide referrer information, but instead of passing a blank header, it passes a forged one. To fix this, change your browser's security settings. If you are using Opera and having problems, try viewing this page for some pointers.
You are behind a firewall or proxy server, and it is passing forged URL data in the Referrer header. If you are using one of these services, you or your network administrator may need to change the configuration.

Disk read error just happened to me. It's a huge problem now and Sony is fixing mine for free (not under warrenty) all i had to do was call sony and pay for shipping (and insurance of course) which was like all of 12 bucks.

Awesome. Just read the FAQ (with a little net Jujitsu) and made note of the class action lawsuit. Before, they were telling me 140 bucks, no matter what was wrong with it, and considering this was a degenerative problem that started under warranty (I just didn't realize it at the time), I wasn't gonna reward them with another 140 bucks.

No prob. Over 40 % of old PS2s are having the problem and Sony isn't issuing a recall :meh: But yeah I called and just ran down the guy, told him i knew of all the problems, told him I already tried what he was gong to tell me to try (i've had 7 friends have the same problem) and then he told me they were fixing it for free now... and I was like... oh sorry about that.

Actually, the XBOX is quite decent. No disc read errors on any of them sold here so far. Our local EB Games has implemented a huge blowout/inventory cleanout sale on used PS2's that may or may not work. I suggested just throwing them all away and invest in something good, or just bulk send them back to Sony without a return address.

Yeah, I know they lack Disc Read Errors, but they have their own problems.

That's pretty enraging.

Sony used to be known to stand by their products.

I've been dealing with this problem since about 6 months after I picked up my PS2 (Though the problem was only with Final Fantasy: The spirits Within, so I figgered it wasn't a big deal. Same disc wouldn't play totally right on other DVD players either, so for about another year, I figgered it was the one disc and ignored it). Then, it became more movies: ones I knew had worked in the past. Now it's over 30 movies and seems to affect like half of my PS1 collection. To find out this is a common problem and Sony won't even do anything about it until they're sued (and even then won't advertise it), that's just

Shit I talked to a customer service guy at Sony way back when I had my regular PS. He asked if I ever used an unlicensed product (I have but of course I said no), and I asked what they did, he flat out said "Actually nothing, but it's a way Sony gets out of some warranties." I was quite surprised.

Wow. It's like they're nto even trying.

I loved the "unlicensed products" loophole anyways. Not like using a no-name memory card will actually frag your system, ut it's still a quick out. But to actually SAY it...

I did the gamefaqs thing a while back. It did work for a while, but it came back soon after. Then I figured that they don't actually fix it when you send it to them, and then that makes you send it in for a SECOND TIME, costing you more money. I say just buy a new one, if it starts acting up again.

Xbox is excellent. I one on Christmas the year it came out, but it kept freezing. Apparently it was a very rare thing for xbox and I exchanged it for a new one the day after Christmas. No problems since. Gamecube no problems at all.

I agree that the Cube is good, but it doesn't match up to the graphical power of the XBox at all. If Nintendo had dumped more power into the 'Cube, it would be the better of the 3, no doubt. I got an Xbox for GTA: Vice City and a 'Cube because of Windwaker. I haven't had any hardware issues with the XBox yet, though I have heard that earlier models did have some problems. That's one of the reasons I opted not to buy a used one

I've have my X-box since the day it came out over here (UK) and I've never, ever had any problems with it. I'm not too sure whether US and Japan had any problems thou 'cos before I bought mine, my mate told me that he heard the X-box's lens was too strong and it kept scratching discs, and after a matter of months it would burn itself out...

Nah, my brother's had his since it came out and he hasn't had any problems at all with it. The only complaint he has is that the newer ones come boxed with a smaller, more streamlined controller. I've got one of the new ones, bundled with Tetris Worlds and Star Wars: The Clone Wars and the GTA3 Bundle.

That's one of the reasons I opted not to buy a used one
I don't really care about graphical power.

GCN--Titles I care about.

X-Box--thus far, none.
