If Hulk Hogan's gimmick were introduced in this day and age would it have the same...
impact as it did in the 80's. Discuss

It'd have an impact if it hadn't been done before, but would be nowhere near as popular as it was in the 80's.

no, especially if he was on smackdown. He ain't hip enough and he tries to speak proper English so he wouldn't be popular at all. and his entrance music isn't some silly urban sounding nonsense. But if he were on Raw he would be popular as he would take up TV time so basically Raw would consist of HHH and Hogan taking up half the show.

Probably. Just look at Goldberg, 2 moves and indestructable, same as Hogan in the 80's.

No.
He'd be popular and a huge star, but Hulk Hogan revolutionized the industry in the 80's. He put wrestling on the map. That's not happening again with what is essentially a milk and cookies, cartoony good guy gimmick. |

I don't think it would have the same impact. I believe back then the WWE was aimed more towards kids I think... That's not the case today....I Think...

Exactly. I mean I just can't see a guy like say...The Ultimate Warrior, having as much success as back in the day. Remember how they had to change Hogan's gimmick in the WCW? Yeah, this might be the reason. People got tired of Hulkamania.

No freakin' way.
Hogan was king in the days when pro wrestling wasn't about technicality or speed. It was about over the top, interesting characters - the wrestling was barely a factor. The Hogan character got over because he was so huge and unstoppable and had great charisma - but he was never a great wrestler (not like Dynamite Kid or Rick Steamboat were great wrestlers anyways). Had Hogan been born 20 years later and was just coming into the business today, the Hulk Hogan gimmick would never work. It would look ridiculous against the likes of Triple H, Brock Lesnar (before his departure), Chris Jericho, John Cena, Eddie Guerrero and Kurt Angle. Not only can all of them wrestle better than him, but they're "cooler" than him. An old dude in yellow panties spouting off lines about eating your vitamins and saying your prayers would get shit on. |

Anyway, I think many of the gimmicks from the 80s and early 90s wouldn't get over nowadays. You had dentists, clowns and repomen. Then there's almost everything involving the Undertaker. Kane, the Ministry, etc.
They don't go over now because the WWE is a different animal 10-20 years later. If Taker and Kane weren't already established, they'd probably be ridiculed (Assuming this was a pre-evolved Kane). E*C and the brood's stuff wouldn't have worked either. Still, some gimmicks transfer well. It's just that there's not really that much of a place for cartoony or supernatural in the current WWE. |

Maybe I have had to much rootbeer and cookies and my bloodsugar is all f'd up, but for some reason I can see Hogan, if he were debuting tomarrow, wearing Hulkamania underoos in a lingerie pillow fight against Christy. It would kick off the new Diva search.

No. If a young Hogan himself was introduced into the industry at this point (if you know what I mean), he'd still have been one of the biggest stars, because he, unquestionably, has "it".
But that gimmick would definitely not have worked today, it would have seemed stupid and childish. |

While that may be correct in some aspects, it is incorrect in many others - and it definitely does describe today's wrestling scene. Wrestling today is definitely more about the characters / physical look, and less about any type of actual ability. Therefore people like Carlito, John Cena, Snitsky, etc. all have jobs. If it were based on ability, they'd be working regular 9 to 5 jobs. Also, while it may be true that during his original run WWF was in transition to more gimmicks / characters, ALL of wrestling was not about characters - as a matter of fact, more of it was about the wrestling aspect. NWA employed a great deal of fantastic talents, the majority of whom were employed based on talent and ability, NOT on their gimmick. Fans then were more appreciative of the actual wrestling talents, not like now where marks go crazy for bland, below average talents like Orton, or someone as overrated as HHH. |

Don't mistake this for me saying that that specific gimmick would work now, because it wouldn't - but I am saying that the statement of wrestling today being more about actual ability than it was back then is incorrect.

The wrestling target audience back in the 80's were children. Today it is teens and young adults. Much different.
Piper however would have done amazing if he came out in this era. |

Orton before his injury was wrestling better then anyone on the roster. I have said it before and I will say it again Orton sells better then anyone in the WWE. Also keeping it on topic Hogan's gimmick/superhero gimmick will never work again. It has already been said but No one wants to see that anymore. |

Seriously, Orton sucks. He is below average in EVERYTHING. Every "great" match he had, he was carried. Selling is more than crawling around the mat and holding your back after a slam.
Mic Skills- Meh. Charisma- Meh. In-Ring Talent- Meh. The onle thing he has is a pretty boy face. THAT IS IT! |

Jericho right now is so overrated. All of his matches are the same and pretty much same for Benoit, but Benoit has wreslted better then Jericho this year. Benoit's match with Shelton was much better then the 2 Jerciho/ Benoit matches Shelton is great but I still do not think that he had better matches then Orton so far this year on RAW. I didn't really see any matches of Guerrero's before WM so I don't know. So far though this year Orton and Christian have had the match of the year on RAW. While Y2J hasn't done anything interesting excpet take that Bulldog from Shleton the RAW after WM. |

Shut up, Jericho hasn't been an immature prick backstage has he? Orton hasn't been SCREWED over the past 4 years, has he? So don't even get me defending Jericho because I swear to God that I WILL WIN!

I present to you the greatest wrestler on Raw...GOOD OLD JR! But seriously. You're basically arguing that a wrestler is superior because of a push. But while I think Orton's a great ENTERTAINER, I think he loses to even the "we'll only let you do 3 moves" version of Jericho, he definitely loses to Eddie and Angle, and he certainly should be considered subpar. |

Possibly, but Loose Cannon has a gun to my back. Turns out he's still a closet Ortonite.
