So my team might move to Texas..(NFL)

From ESPN.com:

Quote:
NEW ORLEANS -- State officials say they are not surprised by a report that New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson is looking at San Antonio as a possible new home for the team, labeling the threat a bargaining tactic.

Benson recently cut off talks with the state about a new long-term agreement to keep the Saints in New Orleans until after the upcoming season.

"It doesn't surprise us at all that they will be rattling the saber a little bit to bring more tension to the situation," said Doug Thornton, regional vice president of SMG, the company that operates the Superdome. "This is not new. This is what NFL teams do."

In a story in Wednesday's editions of the San Antonio Express-News, Stanley Rosenberg, Benson's attorney and a member of the team's board of directors, said the Saints' owner is interested in moving the team, possibly to San Antonio, his second home.

Rosenberg also met with representatives of New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson to discuss the possibility of the Saints' moving to Albuquerque, the newspaper reported.

Rosenberg, one of Benson's key negotiators, also said he has received several offers from outside interests to buy the team, including one for more than $1 billion.

When reached Wednesday at his office, Rosenberg declined to comment other than to confirm that the highest offer Benson has received for the team was "for more than $1.2 billion." The Saints also declined comment.

Gov. Kathleen Blanco said she wasn't surprised the Saints camp raised the possibility of relocation, but she said Louisiana has made a fair offer to Benson. She said she doubts the team can get a better offer elsewhere.

"I still think we offered a great deal to the Saints right now, to Mr. Benson in particular," Blanco said.

The Saints' current agreement, which runs through the 2010 season, includes an exit clause that lets the team leave Louisiana after this season by repaying the $81 million it received during the first four years of the deal. The state can opt out of the deal after the 2007 season.

"We're not going to give them a single legal leg to stand on that would allow the team to leave without paying a penalty," Blanco said. "It's hard for me to predict what their goals are."

The Saints called off negotiations after reviewing a state proposal focused on a $174 million Superdome renovation, with the Saints contributing $40 million, that would increase the team's ability to make money but also reduce the amount of guaranteed income from the state after the renovation is complete.

The state package includes $267 million in guaranteed money for the team, $134 million toward the Dome renovation and an estimated $336 million in additional revenue the Saints could earn after the renovations are complete.

Including the stadium renovation, the state estimates its proposal is worth $737 million from now through the 2025 season.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the Saints have not applied for relocation, the first step in a lengthy procedural process required by the league to move a team. Any proposed relocation by a franchise requires the approval of 75 percent of NFL owners, or 24 of 32 teams.

"We expect the Saints' emphasis to continue to be to negotiate a deal with the state and honor their contract," Aiello said. "All teams, under league rules, must honor their stadium leases."
Letter from Tom Benson:

Many ideas have been discussed between our organization and the State in order to address the increasingly competitive economics of the NFL as well as the challenging economic marketplace in which we find ourselves. Since I acquired the team over 20 years ago to prevent it from being moved to another state, it has been my sincere desire to keep the Saints in New Orleans.

Over the past few weeks, I have had an opportunity to consult with the League, other NFL owners and my family regarding the State-Saints discussions. After much deliberation, I believe it is in everyone's best interests to continue to operate under the existing agreement reached with the State and approved overwhelmingly by the Louisiana legislature only three years ago. I would also expect the State to do likewise.

I am excited about the Saints prospects for the 2005 NFL season and, at this time, all of the energies of our organization will be focused on making this season a special one for all of our fans. At the conclusion of the Saints season, we once again look forward to continuing our dialogue with the State.
Thing is, to get the Alamo Dome up to NFL standards they'd have to spend around $200 million.. It'd cost about that to renovate the Super Dome.. Also, Benson would lose out on like $125 mill in breaking his contract with Louisiana..

:\

LA doesn't want a team and it seems the NFL are trying to force one down their throats.. They didn't fight to keep either team they've had in the past..

Cali already has 3 teams and Texas has 2.. It's be ridiculas to add a team in either state..

I believe it's all a bluff on Benson's part to get Louisiana to renovate the Dome..

I hope we don't lose them..

Who Dat?!?

Benson started the threats during the last offseason.. He's trying to use the thought of them leaving to get LA to build a new dome.. Plans were even released for one with a retratable roof (ala Dallas) built right on the river, near the French Quarter.. Which would rule, but prolly won't happen..

I'd rather see them go to the Mississippi Gulf Coast (which has also been mentioned)..

I think San Antonio would be a good place for a football team personally. I'm not a fan of the city or anything, but from what I know with the Spurs, they support their teams real well and the major Texas colleges are elsewhere (UT=Austin, A&M=College Station, Tech=Lubbock, Baylor=Waco, TCU=not San Antonio) so I think it would get good fan support.

If you move a team to LA, you will probably sell a lot of expensive tickets, but you just don't get the same energy and following that Texas does.

It seems like New Orleans would be a good place for sports franchises based on the amount of great athletes that come out of the state and the collegiate success there too, but I guess they are more just a college state. I wish the Hornets would move out of there and into Kansas City or St. Louis. Both cities deserve basketball and already have NBA-level facilities.

Also, what is up with the Alamo Dome? Why is it even there? As far as I know the only team to ever play there was the Spurs...and they are a basketball team?! Did/does some random football team play there, I don't know of any D-1A school in San Antonio and don't recall an NFL team ever being there either.

But if you think about it, Texas really is the fertile crescent for football. They have like 5 D-1 college teams and just about any other D-1 team in the nation has a player from there. I would rather see one in a place like that then in Los Angeles where people will just go to be seen.

Los Angeles is a terrible sports town. Nobody that lives in LA is originally from there, so they don't really care. I was watching a Dodgers game the other day on EPSN. Really nice day out and they were playing another good team, place wasn't even close to full. Ridiculous. Go to any real sports town under those conditions and you got a sell out.

Texas has enough football teams, moving to Mississippi would work.

That would require Mississippi to develop an economy first

No, seriously though, I would think that Alabama, Oklahoma, or somewhere around the Virginias would be a good place, but it seems like big college areas don't really want to have pro franchises there. San Antonio really isn't a big college area at all, but they are still in the prime of football country, which is why I think they would make a good city.

As a proud Texas, I agree that Texas has enough teams already. Mainly, because that would mean all 3 of the teams in Texas suck. Plus, that ruin the All-Texas Superbowl. Dallas vs. Houston baby!

To be honest though, now thinking about this more, I think a team in Los Angeles would be better then a team in San Antonio. The fans in Antonio might be a little more hardcore, but having the team in Los Angeles is just on another level, everything is magnified there, so I think it would be more exciting then San Antonio for out of state people.
