The Lone Drinker has done some stupid things
Post Watching Judgment Day 2001.

Paul Heyman was such a better commentator then Jerry Lawler. I forgot how good he was. For starters, he actually defends the bad guys like the color commentator is supposed to and makes perfect sense when doing so.

Example, the first match was William Regal taking on Rikishi. Early on in the match, Rikishi attempted to do the stink face on Regal but Regal low blowed Rikishi while referee Teddy Long wasn't looking.

Naturally, Jim Ross freaks out, overacts and is very disgusted by this "spineless action." But Heyman quickly responds to JR and asked him, "If a 500-pound man was trying to put his ass on your face, wouldn't you try to do everything you could to prevent it?"

JR had no choice but to say "Yes."

OWNED, baby.

Then later on, we have Heyman explaining the rules of the Angle/Benoit, three stages of hell match. Then the Fink gets on the mic and explains the rules too. And Heyman responds with, "Didn't I JUST say all that?"

And the way Heyman used to insult and berate JR was so awesome and the way they would yell at each other and argue was fun stuff.

That was just one of the many things that made Heyman so cool.

When he was doing commentary, it reminded me of the days of Bobby Heenan and Jessie Ventura.

Shit man, I miss listening to bad guy commentators and now I am stuck listening to Lawler shout "puppies", agree with Ross on everything, NOT defend the villains like he is supposed to and defend JR from guys trying to beat him up for the next five years. That's a long time.

I blame a lot of online fans for getting Lawler hired back.....not ALL, but some......hell, the same people who can't stand Lawler now were the same jackasses calling for his return in 2001 after he quit his job. I bet they wish now that they would have been content with Heyman.

In the King's defense, he was a good commentator back in the 90's. Anyone know what happened him and why he started to suck so much?

Good start down your road of not being an ass and actually being a normal poster...a few hundred posts too late, but we will take it whenever we can...

I completely agree. Paul Heyman was one of the better announcers WWE ever had. Fact of the matter is he out witted JR (not that hard though) on nearly ever show. He was good for heels because he got them over. His announcing alone made Rhyno into the star he was during 2001. He knows enough about the business to make sense while commentating, and I personally loved when he even corrected JR on the moves he miscalled. Ahhhhhh Paul E....

Heyman was much better than Lawler, no doubt. He actually made JR a lot better too.

Heyman is the man. Probably my favourite quote was when Austin had Rock in a sharpshooter and Heyman goes

Heyman: TAP, TAP OUT MR MOVIE STAR! Ring the bell! Ring the bell Hebner! (or something along those lines)

JR: But he didn't tap out!

Heyman: Well that never stopped him before!

Yeah, Heyman was insanely good as an announcer. He got the heels over, he understood ring psychology weel enough to enhance the storylines in the matches, he actually knew what the moves were called, he didn't shy away from bringing up past storylines to enhance the performers (whereas JR/Lawler basically act as though most storylines never happened); in general Heyman just brought a lot to the table. It still shocks me that he's basically been in exile this whole time. WWE is wasting his talent.

Also, Taz could be as good if he were just a bit more ballsy. Great commentator. But he always seems to stop just short of saying anything really mmorable. Like last night, when Anlge was ripping apart ECW, why wasn't he pointing out the fact that he made Angle tap out when he (as Tazzzzzzzzzz ...bleah) debuted in the WWE?

The only thing about Heyman I didn't like was his high pitched shrill voice when he was yelling, it hurts my ears. But then again Lawler sounds like a pre-pubescant little boy all the time so... Heyman > Lawler

I talk about this topic quite a bit to other Wrestling fans, and they all agree that Heyman was better than Lawler.

I think Heyman came in at just the right time, Lawler was growing very stale at the beginning of 2001 and Heyman was a breath of fresh air, He made the Invasion angle seam much better than it was, and it also made J.R a better commentator.

Does anyone remember Heymans promo before Survivor Series 2001, where he ripped into Vince?

Looking back at that promo makes me sad because they could/should be using Heyman in a much better role.

Hopefully he'll shine at the ECW ppv

Heyman has the most creative mind in the business and right now that mind is being limited to a role in OVW what a fucking joke.

He should at least be a writer for the company if not head booker then again i am hardly suprised he isnt. Lets face it WWE doesnt like to do useful things with people who made there names outside of the company e.g Booker T, RVD and Goldberg.

Do you remember that A-Train - Rey feud a few years back, well Heymans original idea was for Matt Hardy to be in A-Trains place and that Matt would recieve a massive push from that storyline

Of course the rest of the creative team told him to stick it.

Typical ain't it

They have some dick who wrote comedy as one of the head writers on Raw and Heyman who is one of the most original storytellers in wrestling (As ecw proved) is doing nothing.

He's probably being told to write storylines about HHH and stephanies dog while he takes it for a walk and cleans up when it takes a dump in the street.

Paul is an overall better performer than Lawler is. Heyman is actually good on the mic, generating heat - either positive or negative. Lawler, while praised for his ability to get over, cuts your typical "down south" wrestling promo - and generates heat simply off of the simple-minded WWE marks; and of course in the south, where he made himself a star.
