I am going to laugh if the Lakers have a horrible year and he decides to give up and retire. Again.

Lakers are screwed in the salary cap. No free agents most likely. Hopefully a decent draft pick though.
And does this reignite the Lakers/Kings feud? |

I think it would be pretty funny if they don't make many offseason moves but still make it/win the finals.

VERY happy that he's coaching my team. its a minor step, the lakers still need a LOT A LOT of work, they need a big man, first of all. theres a lot more... but this is the first step. lakers will be back to being the LAKERS in 2-3 years. damn salary cap

Very classy to announce it during the NBA Finals. Like the league doesn't have enough problems trying to promote this series.

Although it seems like the Timberwolves are in the situation that Jackson usually steps into, he was never really a consideration for that job. The only legit ones ever were Lakers, Knicks, and the Bulls for the few hours when Skiles called off negotiations.
Nonetheless, this all goes back to what I have said all along. The Lakers did not neccessarily make the wrong decision in keeping Kobe instead of Shaq. We won't be able to tell for a long time to see who pans out, but there is no reason why the Lakers would keep Kobe and why Phil would come back if both don't believe that he is good enough to win it all again. It won't happen this year, it probably won't happen for at least two more after that. But lets say it happens in 2009, you know where Shaq will be and that is on his couch watching. You have to face it, he did have a pretty great season again this year, but when it all came down to it his injuries caught up with him...again. Now all the people who rode the Heat all season long are questioning how good they will even be next year. Everybody hates me for saying it, but keeping Kobe wasn't a bad decision. He is in an elite group of players and still has a good 10 years left. Once the Lakers can rebuild around him, I believe they can be good, the Lakers believe they can be good, and Phil Jackson obviously believes the same thing. Like I said in the post Lakers-Clippers-Heat, the Lakers would have been a rebuilding team had Shaq stayed as well. By the time they are rebuilt enough to be a title contender, Shaq will either be retired or close to it and Kobe will still be in his prime. The amount of flames that I get from Your Hero will likely determine if people still find that trading Shaq was the worst decision of all time. |

He very well could be, in fact I would give it a 50/50 odds that he is still there in even two years. I'm just saying that people are starting to realize that keeping the young star over the old star might not have been THAT bad of a decision.
I am quite interested to see how Kobe takes this. I don't think Kobe ever said "Phil or Kobe", but Phil said that on TV and then wrote a book calling Kobe everything bad he possibly could. Its apparent that Phil wants to start over, but Kobe has to be responsive. More drama in the NBA  |

Chris Myers just had an exclusive interview with Jackson on FSN, and Phil acknowledged a lot of the sensationalism that I pointed out last year.
He acknowledged that Kobe decided to stay out of the Lakers off-season plans this year because of all that happened last year, and he also said that Kobe never made the ultimatum "Me or Shaq" to anybody. He said that Kobe was made out to be a worse guy then he actually is, very interesting interview. It seems like all of the media overreaction from last summer is finally coming clear. |

It sounds like they are pretty close to right now. I don't know too much about him though, I kind of feel bad for him because I don't think McHale will be able to put out a good team next year.

He is the man, Nate McMillion is a good motivational coach but Casey is the real basketball mind. Gary Payton credits him with teaching him how to really play the game. It is 50/50 McMillon will be back next year and if not I want Casey.

It sounds like you guys are pretty much getting McMillon back, at least from like a national standpoint. I would say getting Ray Allen back is all that matters though.

Everything just doesn't work out right though. I guess there is good reason for Phil to come back, a team in a big market that is going to spend money to win and already has one of the leagues superstar players, but why would Kobe want phil back after all of that bullshit last year?
I mean I am the one on this website who is adamant that the events of last summer were extremely sensationalized, but you can't argue what Phil said in his book and on sports center. From what I've seen too, Kobe and Phil haven't really talked yet either. Unless Kobe was really humbled by last season and has a completely new attitude this could be a big disaster. Hope not though. |
