Bret Boone released by Seattle Mariners.

'Designated for assignment', basically the same thing. They've given up on him. Some what surprised. I mean, he's been anything but productive this year, but still holds a ton of potential.

The guy taking his place will never put up those numbers Boone did. I understand the need for change but I think he's being given up on too fast. Change will do Boone good, I won't be surprised to see him get a couple real good years in elsewhere. Shit, he was the gold glove winner too just last year.

He's the backup second baseman on my fantasy team, and from what I've paid attention he seemed to be hitting a little better lately. Go figure though.

I thought designated for assignment means that he is put on waivers and if another team doesn't pick him up in a certain amount of time then he is sent to AAA?

Also, from the trade rumors etc., it looked like the team with the most interest in him was the Padres. I could see a few other teams going after him though.

There was speculation here that the Twins would go after him, but now that we're out of June, which is always our shit month, the reports are that they are preferring to stick with Punto. I think thats probably a good decision, unless he gets injured at the exact wrong time...again.

Yes, careers don't just "take a HUGE drop " like that. Nobody justs "hits a wall". I have no doubt in my mind that he was. Also, Canseco said he was. Laugh at him as you will, look at all the men named . Look how their stats have dropped off at such a ridiculous way.

Pudge - 5hr
Sosa- hitting 230.
Boone- Released
Bonds- Well, we know the story there
Giambi- until two games ago he wasn't gonna break 10 hr for the year

Coincidence? I think not.

I was listening to our talk station on the way home from work today, and they were talking all about Bret Boone and whether or not the Twins should go get him. One thing they kept saying was that "Boone was linked towards steroids, whether or not that was fair". They made it sound like they didn't really think he was on roids, and they compared him to Chuck Knoblauch. If you remember him, he was rookie of the year in 1991, traded to the Yankees and their leadoff hitter/secondbaseman during the years when they were actually good. Then all of a sudden he started making mistakes, like not being able to throw the ball to first base, then he moved to the outfield, but his batting skill diminished because he was so distracted by his throwing problems, it was like all of his talent started to slip away, and then he was pretty much out of the league at 30. It sounds like Boone is just old and on the decline, and he can't fix his mistakes like he used to.

And as for Boones big season, like 37 home runs and 141 rbi or whatever, is completely misrepresented by those numbers. It's not like some average guy just happened to be amazing that year, his whole team was amazing. Ichiro, Cameron, McLemore, everybody. Thats why they won like 116 games or whatever. Boone was just a part of a whole team playing well, and his success had a lot to do with the success of everybody around him.

I wouldn't call them blind assumptions. Besides his production droping drastically in the past two years, he was names in the Canseco book. Sure the Canseco draws a lot of skepticism, but you can't pretend like it didn't have any effect on how people look at Mark McGuire now.

I think Outlaw was reffering to Gertner. Anyway...

An yes Gertner, sometimes carreers don't wind down with numbers slowly declining every year, they have in the past and will in the future just drop off a cliff. Baseball is very much a mental game, and when you struggle and loose confidence things can compound dramatically. Your assumptions just go to show you really know nothing about baseball.

I know he was referring to Gertner, but The Miz too was taking serious offense to somebody bringing up steroids. The truth is, his name was linked to steroids just like Barry Bonds, Mark McGuire, Jeremy Giambi etc. If Canseco says that Mark McGuire was on roids and now people are questioning his hall of fame status, then why is it so bad to even bring up that Canseco mentioned Boone as well?

Personally I don't really think he was on roids, I think its more of just losing his confidence and ability to fix his mixtakes, but really who knows? I mean technically the same thing is happening to Sammy Sosa right now, he can't hit the ball anymore, and its pretty widely being attributed to steroids. So I don't think its something to get up in arms about when somebody says Boone may be a steroid case.

Good of you to leave Rafael Palmeiro off your list even though he was named in Conseco's book and just haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaappens to be hitting fine this year.

Pudge plays in the toughest park in the AL to hit home runs in and has never been known for his power hitting.

Sosa is a career .270 hitter and is in the AL for the first time since 1991.

Boone has never been consistantly brilliant and has played with a subpar lineup around him most of his career. The only time his stats ballooned were when he had a good team around him.

Bonds is 40 years old and trying to heal an injury.

Since you know everything, maybe you could explain how Roger Maris could hit 61 homers in one season, but never hit more than 39 in any other in his career.

Speaking of which, Brian Jordan is now on the DL, hinting he might be at the end of his career. Braves just brought up their number one prospectttt. I'm excited.

I love Jordan though. He was always a solid player. I remember when he was on the cover of Triple Play Baseball.

I just have an independent question, I'm not trying to prove a point or anything, but do you guys attribute Sosa's decline to steroids?

Personally, the way it has happened, I don't, but just want to see what you all think.

I don't think Sosa's decline has to do with steriods. I think a lot of it has to do with that time he got hit in the head. Now he stands so far away from the plate its a lot easier for pitcher to get him out. Of course thats not the only thing, he was declining anyways, but that just sped up the process.

It is an odd situation. He was their #1 pick in 2002. He has only played in Double A, so they are kinda gambling on him. That is probably why they held out on him. All their left and right fielders are rookies now. He should be ok, seeing as how we have some other guys from Double A who have been doing alright as well.

Speaking of which, Jeff Francoeur (the prospect I've been talking about) is expected to start tonight because of the double hitter.

Yessss. We will see if the talk is just that, or if he is any count.

Johnson, McCann, Betemit, Langerhans, and now Francoeur. ALl very young.

Davies and Boyer are also very young.

Braves are looking OK for the future. Looking good for this season too, 3 games down and looking to goto 2.5.

Yea Braves should really be solid in the future with all these guys playing now. They might not win the NL East this year but who cares. Their future is a lot brighter than the usual win the division by 10 games then do nothing in the playoffs.

Agreed. Still think they will win the division though. The Nats can't keep winning every one run game they have.

Yeah I dunno, we are looking good for at least a Wild Card. But, I'm looking at other stuff besides Division Titles right now, and that's the damn crowd. I am really hoping this home grown young guys gets the people in Atlanta going. Sure, we always have a good crowd, but all they do is sit there. They will cheer every now and again, but back in the day it was BOOMING. Back when Fulton County was still around. Seems like the people just come to expect to win a division title and nothing more, so they don't make any noise. Pisses me off.
