lol...you're right. Michael Jordan > Ronald Reagan.
The "Greatest American" award to which the promos alluded was decided in an online vote. Absolutely nothing prestigious about it. The top 25 or so was composed of a ridiculous number of recent names, and there were way too many politicians on the list for my liking. JBL's "Great American Award" has more importance than Reagan's "Greatest American" title. (For more laughs, check out the results for "The Greatest Canadian." Bret Hart made it rather far up the list; and some radio DJ gathered enough support for his write-in campaign to catapult him far into the rankings.) |

If it were up to America, Edwin Shoemaker and Edward Knabusch (inventers of Lazy-Boy chairs) would win a Nobel Prize.

And what the fuck with Michael Jordan. I'm as big a sports fan as anyone, but how do you compare an athlete with people who have effected actual social and cultural change? At leat bring up someone who tried to speak out on social issues like Arthur Ashe, Muhammed Ali, or Hank Aaron. Not someone like MJ who outside the arena was a heartless corporate schill.

![]() As someone who studied Soviet politics I agree with that, Reagan was, as they say, in the right place in the right time. He didn't end teh Cold War, he ended a period of detente and made the situation worse. If you want a figurehead, look at the election of Gorbachev as Russian PM, he noticed that the economy was so lousy, mainly due to the arms race and knew that something had to be done. From what I've learnt Reagan was a lousy leader. |

Actually, from what I've learnt and discussed, Reagan ranks as one of the great presidents of the 20th century, up there (tho prolly a bit behind) FDR, Teddy Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, and Truman. I wouldn't say he was just there when the Cold War ended... he used a risky but successful gamble, building up arms, banking on the fact that the Soviet Union wouldn't be able to keep up. His Reaganomics, though partly responsible for a lot of the country's debt today, helped lift the nation out of a huge recession during the period. Morally, he was one of our less scrupulous leaders, and if you compare him to a lot of our other presidents this century, he actually ranks pretty favorably.
Reagan wasn't perfect, but I'd rank him as one of this century's great Americans. Greatest? Nah... prolly not. But don't forget that FDR actually failed to bring the country out of the Depression for 12 years. It was more of the war that brought us out rather than the New Deal. And a lot of FDR's programs were extremely questionable in terms of Constitutionality and stuff. I'm not saying he was bad... but he was far from perfect as well. Heck, pretty much every president had his faults. Anyway, what had my brother and I busting up during that JBL segment was what followed the Reagan intro... "JBL almost singlehandedly help lower illegal immigration into the U.S." accompanying a clip of JBL chasing after those illegal immigrants. Totally classic stuff right there. ![]() |

As most presidents/prime ministers are just figure heads for their party I don't think any of them are worthy to win a "Greatest" (insert country here) title. The only one I could think of that could be worth it is perhaps Churchill. I don't know much about British History, but the man has tonnes of respect around the world for being a tough SOB when they needed it the most.

Oh and when they did MLK and JBL, two great Americans, did anyone else think of Saviors July 2004 picture of JBL looking around the ring with the caption being "Where'd those nigg*rs go!?"
Savior, bravo, still the best caption ever in my opinion. |

Ronald Regan is actually one of the worst presidents of all time. The guy racked up more debt in his year in office then all the presidents before him COMBINED. Now that is a shitty ass president. He is also the genius that came up with trickle down economics, where he gives rich people MORE MONEY hoping they accidently drop a few bucks down to the pesents below them. Regan was a complete douche bag that knew nothing about politics, but was charismatic enough to fool everyone in the United States. No fucking way is he in the same league as even LBJ and LBJ was a terrible president. As for FDR, there was a very good reason he was elected 4 times. It was because his New Deal was working, and he was getting jobs back. The war just happened to help that even more. He also started the greatest govenment policy througout mankind when he created Social Security. If it weren't for FDR's innovation my grandfather wouldn't be alive right now at the age of 94 because he would have had to work until he died, because he'd have to rely on a shitty pension. The greatest americans of the 20th Century are Martin Luther King Jr., FDR, and Bob Dylan. |
