FANTASY BOOK: A Cruiserweight Title Tournament
Yeah, I'm bored. Yeah, I'm ripping off an idea that CyNick brought up in another thread. But, if you were to try to get the SmackDown cruiserweights over via a tournament, how would you book it? The whole damn thing. Don't worry about making everything make sense according to how current booking is going, this is your opportunity to let your imagination run wild. Here's mine:
Royal Rumble - January 25th The Rey Mysterio/Jamie Noble match ends in a no-contest somehow. Perhaps Kyo Dai interferes and attacks both men or something. Who knows? However it happens, neither man clearly wins the match. SmackDown! - January 29th Paul Heyman comes out to open the show and cuts a promo. First he talks about how Brock Lesnar annihilated Hardcore Holly. Then he talks about how Chris Benoit will have to walk through hell before he can fight Brock Lesnar at Wrestlemania. Then, he talks about how he was disappointed in the outcome of the Cruiserweight Title match and calls Rey Mysterio to the ring. Rey comes down with the belt, and Heyman lays it out for him. He can't have a title without a clear-cut champion on HIS SmackDown. He can't allow anything but "undisputed" to precede the names of his champions. Therefore, he has no right to that belt. As of this moment, the WWE Cruiserweight Title is vacated. As Rey starts to threaten Paul, Heyman backs him off with these words: "You'll get your shot Rey. Just like all the other cruiserweights in the back." Later in the night, the FBI comes to the ring, but they don't know who their opponents are. Heyman's music hits, and he asks Chuck and the Bull to leave the ring. Once Nunzio manages to convince them to leave, Heyman informs Nunzio that, since they're old friends, he's going to let Nunzio have the first crack at the Cruiserweight Title. Tonight begins a ten-man tournament for the belt, and Nunzio has the first match. And now his opponent... "Intergalactic" by the Beastie Boys begins to play, and the "smarks" go absolutely apeshit. That's right...IT'S NOVA! The original wrestling superhero is totally pumped up, and he sprints into the ring. Heyman orders the bell, and they go at it. This is an old-school ECW-style cruiserweight match, with all kinds of absurd aerial moves, and some brutal submissions. In the end, Nunzio grabs Nova for the Sicilian Slice, but Nova wriggles his way free, gets Nunzio upside-down on his back, and hits the Kryptonite Krunch! One...two...THREE! Nova upsets Nunzio, and the Cruiserweight Title Tournament is underway. SmackDown! - February 5th Backstage, Funaki tries to track down Paul Heyman to find out what's going on with the Cruiserweight Title tournament, since Paul hasn't announced any more participants. Paul tells Funaki that all the "usual suspects" are in: Tajiri, Jamie Noble, Chavo Guerrero, Shannon Moore, Billy Kidman, of course we've already seen Nova; and next week, Funaki himself will be facing former champion Rey Mysterio...IF he can beat Akio tonight. Oh...and his match is next. Good luck, Funaki. Good luck, indeeeeeeed. The Funaki/Akio match is not quite as intense as the Nunzio/Nova match, but both men get in some big moves, culminating in Akio hitting the Yang Time (or whatever they call it now) for the three-count. Akio has made it to the semifinals, but he has to fight Rey Mysterio next week. SmackDown! - February 12th Heyman announces that the finals of the Cruiserweight Title Tournament will be held at Wrestlemania XX in just under five weeks. He also announces that one more match has been added to the card for this weekend's No Way Out Pay-Per-View. Billy Kidman will be going one-on-one with Tajiri in a quarterfinal match. But tonight, we've got Rey Mysterio and Akio. This one should be so fast-paced and dizzying that it induces motion sickness. I see Rey getting his knees up during Yang Time, Akio reversing the West Coast Pop into a powerbomb, all kinds of sick aerial moves and counters. In the end, Akio goes up top for a cross body, but Rey dropkicks him in the midsection. With Akio down, Rey goes to the apron, hits his "Dropping the Dime" legdrop across the back of Akio's head, and gets the duke. No Way Out - February 15th As promised by Paul Heyman, Billy Kidman and Tajiri will get it on tonight! These two have fought so many times that they have incredible chemistry in the ring. Like the Rey/Akio match, this one will go back-and-forth with each man escaping the other's finisher. In the end, though, it's Tajiri with the Kick of Death winning it and advancing to the semis. SmackDown! - February 19th Backstage, Josh Mathews interviews Nova (who has been fighting in tag matches over the last two weeks) about his career. Nova mentions that he's been under a developmental contract with WWE for a long time, but it took Paul Heyman, his old ECW boss, to bring him up to the "big show." He knows that he's an underdog in this tournament, but that's the way he likes it. Jamie Noble's held that Cruiserweight Title a couple of times before, so he knows what it takes to win when the pressure's on. But...pressure CREATES novas. The match is actually a pretty technical contest. Toward the end, Noble goes for the Trailer Hitch, but Nova escapes. After a bit of grappling, Nova manages to get the Nova-Cain and he gets the upset victory. Cole and Tazz go on about the fact that, three weeks ago, most WWE fans had never even HEARD of Nova, and now he's in the semifinals of the Cruiserweight Title Tournament! SmackDown! - February 26th With three of the four semifinal spots decided, tonight Shannon Moore and Chavo Guerrero will go one-on-one to fill the final Final Four position. The former MFer and Eddie's nephew put on an impressive show, but in the end, it's Chavo with the brainbuster to advance to the semifinals, where he'll join Rey Mysterio, Tajiri, and Nova. SmackDown! - March 5th Tonight, one spot in the Cruiserweight Title match at Wrestlemania XX will be decided when former champions and bitter enemies tangle. It's Rey Mysterio against Tajiri. One man goes to Wrestlemania, the other stays home on the 14th and watches on TV. Mysterio shows off some of the edge he had when he was competing in ECW against the other "extreme luchadores." In the end, though, Tajiri bridges out of a West Coast Pop, and blasts Rey in the back of the head with a brutal kick for the surprise three-count. SmackDown! - March 12th With just three days remaining until Wrestlemania, Tajiri needs an opponent for the Cruiserweight Title. Chavo Guerrero cuts a promo about how, all his life, he's been "Eddie's cousin." No matter how good he was of his own accord, everyone always saw him as "Eddie's cousin." After the beating he laid into him at the Royal Rumble and his performance in this Cruiserweight Title Tournament, he is lifting himself up ahead of Eddie in everyone's eyes. He's going to make an example of Nova, and then he's taking the Cruiserweight Title. Fantastic match here, highlighting both men's strengths. Nova goes for a victory roll, but Chavo plants him and hooks the tights. One...two...three! Chavo wi...wait. A second referee comes out of the back to tell the first ref that Chavo held the tights and Paul Heyman said that there had to be winners, fair and square. The ref re-starts the match, and a surprised Chavo is rolled up by Nova for the three-count. Nova's going to Wrestlemania! Wrestlemania XX - March 14th Once Nova and Tajiri are in the ring, Paul Heyman comes out. He makes mention of the fact that there is no belt at ringside, and he didn't bring one out himself. "You two have really impressed me over the last several weeks. But the thing is, as good as this tournament has been, there needed to be something special about the title match. I was wracking my brain for the last couple of weeks trying to figure out a fitting way to end it. And then it struck him. These two have been taking the cruiserweight division to new heights on a figurative level...why not do so literally. If I may, gentlemen, ask you to look up." When they do, we see the Cruiserweight Title lowered from the ceiling. That's right...LADDER MATCH! This one should be brutal. as. hell. I'm talking suplexes onto the ladder, diving legdrops off the ladder, superkicks into the ladder, big tumbles off the ladder...every big ladder spot these two can come up with. In the end, they both are climbing up to the top and reach for the belt. Out of NOWHERE, Tajiri swings one leg up and clocks Nova in the side of the head with a big kick. With a semi-conscious Nova laid out atop the ladder, Tajiri cinches in the Tarantula (like Jericho's Walls of Jericho at the Rumble a few years back). After he releases the hold, Nova tumbles like dead weight to the canvas. Tajiri reaches up, unhooks the belt, and ushers in a new era in the Cruiserweight Title division. === Okay, I know none of this will ever happen, but looking at it from a purely fantasy standpoint: it'd be pretty damned cool, wouldn't it? Anyway, now it's your turn. Who do you put in it? Who do you have win it? What happens as a result? Quote:

I'm starting a little bit Unorthodox here.
19th January: RAW Theres a Tag Match to determine who will be in the Royal Rumble between La Resistance members, Rob Conway and Rene Dupree, and and the team of Mark Jindrak and Garrison Cade. La Resistance dominate most of the match, and attempt the Bonsoir on Cade, but is reversed Jindrak dropkicks Rene in the face, who rolls out of the ring. Cade picks up Conway and Jindrak dropkicks him, followed by the one two three by Cade. The team celebrate a hard fought victory, when out of nowhere, Rosey and The Hurricane attack them from behind, destroying the face team. 25th January: Royal Rumble Jamie Noble vs Rey Mysterio for the Cruiserweight title. A lot of big pops, with Noble working on the legs of Mysterio. All of Mysterios offense is reversed by Noble, who has the upper hand in most of the match. Mysterio trys to hit an impromtu West Coast Pop by springboarding onto the middle rope mid-match, but Noble ducks and Mysterio lands hard on his legs. Noble hits a tigerbomb. One...Two...Kick out barely. Noble's in shock. He attempts to pick up mysterio, who reverses him into a single-leg take down which brings Noble set up for a 619. Rey hits it and signals for the West Coast Pop. Noble reverses with a powerbomb/pinning combination with a handful of tights. Rey kicks out barely. While Noble argues with the referee, rey rolls him up with a handful of tights, too, and gets the One...Two...Three While Rey celebrates, Paul heymans music hits. He states "Rey Mysterio, that wasnt a very fair way to retain that cruiserweight title. And if the title keeps getting defended like that, the Cruiserweight division will be put to shame. But I am out here to stop that shame. As from now on, Rey mysterio, that title will be defended under 24/7 rules" Out from the crowd, the Hurricane attacks Rey from behind with The Eye Of The Hurricane, and makes the pinfall. NEW CHAMP: The Hurricane. 29th January: Smackdown Paul Heyman opens the show with an in-ring promo, praising the greatest WWE champion of all time. He says thats not all thats on his agenda tonight. he states that because The Hurricane is NOT a contracted Smackdown superstar, the title must be VACATED. He says there will be a tournament between the Cruiserwights of Smackdown, where the winner will take home the Cruiserweight championship. And that the tournament will start tonight. Rey argues to Paul Heyman about the new rule added to the title at the Roayl rumble. Heyman tells him to relax and that his chance at getting his title back is tonight, against a very old friend of his, Billy Kidman Rey vs Kidman. Back an forth cruiserweight action. Rey goes for the 619, and misses, as is hit with a BK bomb. Kidman doesnt worry about the pin, and drags mysterio to the turnbuckle. Kidman hits a shooting star press and gets the pinfall and the win. Rey is irate about this, and nearly turns his back on Kidman. 5th February: Smackdown Rey confronts Paul Heyman angrily, but Paul tries to settle him down by telling him to wait for Wrestlemania. Funaki vs Tajiri. Tajiri has most of the offense going. funaki tries to retaliate, but is just met with kicks. tajiri finishes him off with a kick to the head for the pinfall. 12th February: Smackdown Paul London talks to Paul heyman backstage about being in the Tournament. Heyman tells him not to worry, and that he has a match booked for him at No Way Out (wow, Paul London on PPV). However, he will face a mystery opponent. Ultimo Dragon vs Nunzio: mixed match, going back and forth between Ultimos Martial Art style of Luchilibre and Nunzios mat skills. Nunzio misses a Sizilian slice and is hit with a moonsault for the win. 15th February: No Way Out After the first match, it cuts to backstage where Paul Heyman calls Paul London to the ring via Titantron. Paul Heyman states he has done some trades with RAW, and tells him that he has another suprise for the crowd before he tells London his opponent. He states that the match after Paul Londons one will be between Scotty 2 Hotty and another mystery opponent. He then states that Londons opponent for tonight will be... The Hurricane. Hurricane comes through the crowd and hits The Eye of The Hurricane from behind Paul London and picks up an easy win. S2H's music hits. Scotty waits in the ring for a few seconds before somebodys music hits. That person is Spike Dudley. Spike runs to the ring, under S2H and hits a battering ram on scotty. he attempts another, but Scotty moves, leaving spike hanging on the second rope. Scotty jumps over the rope, shooting Spikes head even more into the rope. Spike stands up dazed and is hit with a facebuster. Scotty goes for the Worm and the Win. 19th February: Smackdown Heyman announces the participants so far who have made it though to the next round, and that they will go on to wrestle at Wrestlemania in the Finals of the tournament. Those participants are Billy Kidman, Ultimo Dragon, Tajiri, The Hurricane and Scotty 2 Hotty. He calls Shannon Moore to ringside (who has been squashed and pushed around by Big Show and Matt Morgan in recent weeks). He tells Shannon that his match is not next, but his match is now. Akio comes out, and automatically starts hammering Shannons ribs, which have been weakened by Show and Morgan. He hits a moonsault kick and a Yang Time to pick up the victory. 26th February: Smackdown Paul Heyman comes out and announces that the last match for the Cruiserweight Tournament is tonight, between Jamie Noble and Chavo Guerrero Jamie brings a fully recovered Nidia out with him, and Chavo brings Uncle Eddie with him too. Good technical match all-round. Jamie, getting frustrated, signals to Nidia to get him a chair. Eddie go around to Nidia, trying to pry the weapon out of her hands. Chavo gets distracted by the 2 arguing, when Noble rolls Chavo up with a handful of tights for the 3 count. Chavo is upset at himself as he leaves the arena. 5th March: Smackdown Paul Heyman states that he has 7 particpants entered in the Tournament finals, but 7 is a rather odd number, so he decides to bump it up to 8. He says that next week, all of the participants who have been eliminated from the tournament will have a second chance next week in an Over-The-Top-Rope Battle Royal. However, because rey Mysterio cheated at the Royal Rumble, he would have to earn his way to the Battle Royal by facing... The Big Show. Rey comes out for the match. Big Show constently tries to run him over throughout the match, but is out-run by Mysterio. Big Show, getting frustrated, brings a chair in and knocks Mysterio out. The ref calls for the bell, but is interupted by Paul heyman, who tells him that the match is a No DQ match. ref restarts the match, and Show goes for a cover, but Mysterio kicks out. Mysterio gets up, and an outraged Show runs at him, only to be met with a drop-toe-hold to the second rope. Rey sets the chair up between Show and the rope, and hits a 619. Show takes the chair with him as he is hit, and rests his head on the chair. Mysterio hits a dropping the dime for the 1-2-3. 12th March: Smackdown Battle Royal time. Spike gets eliminated early on by Nunzio by reversing a Dudley Dawg. Shannon then tosses a taunting Nunzio over. Chavo comes in with a shot to Shannons ribs, and hoists him over. Chavo ges on a roll and hits Rey Mysterio with a brainbuster, and does the same to Paul London. He goes up to try and hit London with a frog splash, but is pushed off and out by Funaki. He then hits Paul London with a Michinoku driver, then picks hit up and throws him out. Funaki picks up a prone Rey, still feeling the effects of the Brainbuster, and throws him over, but Rey hangs on while Funaki celebrates. Funaki turns around and is met with a head scissor to eliminate him out of the Battle Royal. 15th March: Wrestlemania XX **note, 4 1/2 hour mania (I'll only do the first lot of matches with just winner) Rey vs Hurricane Winner: Rey Tajiri vs Scotty 2 Hotty Winner: Tajiri Kidman vs Jamie Winner: Noble Ultimo vs Akio Winner: Ultimo Rey vs Tajiri Winner: Tajiri Noble vs Ultimo Winner: Ultimo Tajiri vs Ultimo Batlle of the martial art modified lucha style. BIG match with more pops than you can shake a stick at. Tajiri tries hitting Ultimo with the Mist, but hits the ref, and Ultimo comes back with some mist of his own. He goes for the Dragon DDT, but is thrown down and hit with a kick to the side of the head. New ref comes down and Tajiri slowly makes a cover, but Dragon kicks out. An upset tajiri is then hit from out of nowhere with the DDT and the cover is made. NEW CHAMP: ULTIMO DRAGON ------------------------------------------------------------ sorry about the shortness on the end one |

The bottom line with gettin over the Cruiserwieghts is to KEEP THEM SEPARATE!
Ive said this a hundred times, but boxing doesn't book Oscar vs Lennox, why? because Lennox would kill Oscar and Oscar wouldn't draw anymore. The way they do it, they have draws in multiple weight classes, there's no reason the WWE cant do the same. Especially considering the large Latino following they have. They have Rey, who could be built up as a main eventer (yes a CW can main event), and build the division around him. Hell even a guy like AJ Styles I think would would do well on the National stage if he was given the chance. In fact, a Rey-Styles fued would tear down the house. |
